Yan vs. O' Malley - A Balanced Take

The Munhoz fight was a weird one, a lot of people claim that Suga was starting to get his hands going and was on his way to a W, but from memory Munhoz was piecing up his leg and looked like he was clearly winning. I don't recall Suga having any big moments and looking frustrated.

He shut his eye out with a very big punch. His right eye. The left one was the poked one.

Omally can only beat up cans. When he fights someone who understands distance and footwork he has trouble landing his kill shots. Yan going to make an example out of him.
They aren't cans per say, some fighters he beat are legit but he's always had the size/height/reach advantage and many of the fighters he fights should be fighting at flyweight or are actually flyweight fighters. Also they have been chinny so getting knocked out by O'Malley isn't surprising. O'Malley struggles knocking out other fighters. Kris ate them all and everyone else he fought that's more durable had no problem eating his shots. Injuring the eye doesn't count but Chito also ate his shots just fine. I don't think his power is really that great once he fights more durable and bigger sized fighters that's not known for having weak chins.

With his talks about moving up to FW, I don't think his power carries above his weight class though. We'll see soon enough though, Yan is durable and no one that has fought him yet has put him out. So if Yan does it, I'll give him his props. I just don't think it's going to happen though. I think Yan will break O'Malley or something weird is going to happen during the fight again, just like the other times O'Malley was losing the fight.

It’s easy to let the dislike for O’Malley cloud any judgment for any of his fights. The kid is very easy to hate.
however let’s be real here. O’Malleys best win is Raulian Paiva. The only two fights he’s had against legit competition he failed miserably.

Yan is the former champion and has ran through most of his comp except the current BW champ.
Their resumes speak for itself.

A lot of people want to suggest Munhoz clearly won the 1st round but he didn't. One of the judges gave it to Sean. In the 2nd at the time the fight ended it really did look like Sean was taking over at that point. Not that any of this has anything to do with fighting a savage like Yan though.

Sherdog was pretty sold on Aljo being no
Match for Yan too

If you never saw Sean fight and just read this forum to pick up idea who he was, you'd think he was the worst fighter at BW lol. Or any fighter kicks his legs and can beat him like an easy button. Munhoz kicks pretty hard, and sure we didn't see the whole fight, but he definitely didn't take him out in the first round like people say here. His rainbow hair is ridiculous, but I don't let that distract me from rating his fighting capabilities.

I watched the fight last night and I think Munhoz clearly won round 1 even though not much happened.

He spammed low kicks and O'Malley only defended like 1/4th of them and they were partial blocks.

Sean landed only a couple of punches but he started turning that up in round 2.

I also think it has a lot to do with the Yan fight.

Obviously Yan is a lot better than Munhoz but Munhoz fought in a way that Yan would never fight in and that might not be great because it's a great approach to fighting a lanky blitzy karate-boxing guy like Sean.

Skill wise O'Malley has good stand up, yet Kris walked through everything and even caught O'Malley a few times against the fence.
Now if that was Yan he would've done more damage because he's way faster and hits harder than Kris.

Yan is a notorious slow starter but he never stops coming forward and Sandhagen found out that all the movement in the world won't halt him.

O'Malley lacks heart, and is prone to injury, so I think Yan will expose some of the holes that Suga foot has shown in his previous fights.
The speed advantage may very well go to O'Malley, but Yan is like a little pitbull that won't stop, and I think that pressure will reveal the truth.

O'Malley can win a point fighting contest here, but if it at all turns into an actual "fight" Yan will come out on top.

Dislike for O'Malley colors people's perception a little too much, so I'm going to try to just cover the obvious points.
Hating fighters has no place in fight analysis. it's very frustrating.
O'Malley's clear advantages in these fight are his range, height, and striking accuracy. He is a very coordinated striker who works best at tip range, who throws great combinations from different angles at great speed, can throw from his back foot, and who uses a lot of feints and mixups extremely well. He tends to fare better against less mobile targets who are at a clear speed and range disadvantage, like Moutinho, where he can style off and chain combinations or use his speed advantage to land counters. In his last fight, Pedro adopted a mobile strategy, to move in and out of range, avoiding the boxing exchanges, and poking with leg kicks that while mostly checked also added up. O'Malley had trouble finding his range, even if he did manage to land a few good punches, including one that shut Pedro's right eye. Upon rewatching I thought he won that round. He is exceptionally good at chaining strikes and finding the counter punches, and avoiding head strikes.

Yan is even faster, has better movement, and a much more polished striking game, not to mention speed, than Pedro. He works at his best moving in and out with fast short combinations. Nothing particularly fancy, just tenacious, fast, and precise. He has a big reach disadvantage, but he moves in and out very well, and tends to find his range and pick it up as the fight moves forward. He will probably move laterally a lot and frustrate O'Malley, who will have to try to find his range against a much more mobile target than ever before. While O'Malley generally has a speed advantage, against Yan this might not be the case. Propensity for injury might be a factor, but it's impossible to factor in such things. Neither fighter seems to opt for wrestling offensive, though both have good takedown and submission defense.

The thing with O'Malley is that he is in love with the idea of becoming a KO artist like Conor or Anderson, while he should grow into a more dynamic MMA fighter like DJ or GSP, who could change gears mid fight if something was not working. His BJJ is actually surprisingly good, but he rarely has alternative gameplans and always seems to prefer to strike. He needs to get his ego in check, and realize styling off with strikes won't always be available as he fights the higher level competition moving forward, if he wants to be consistent.

I think this is a difficult fight to call; far more than people are making it out to be, though obviously it is an enormous step up in competition for Sean. I'm going to go out on a limb and say O'Malley shocks the world.

I dig it. But I don't see him hurting or subbing Yan. So he's left with outpointing, mostly from range.

And this next part is very important. When things go his way, O'Malley gets stronger. But when they don't, he gets frustrated and gets worse, not better. And Yan is very hard to hit.

My analysis is so obvious it's become downright cliché when discussing this fight; I won't be surprised if O'Malley wins the first round, but I will be surprised if he wins 2 rounds.

Gun to head I'd take Yan -300 over O'Malley +250. But if someone offered me 5-1, I'd take O'Malley.

Most, if not all, fighters fare better against stationary targets with speed and reach deficits. But other than a reach advantage over Yan what advantages does Sean have in this fight?

Yan is even faster, has better movement, and a much more polished striking game

So if Yan is a better technical striker, has better footwork, and is faster what advantages does Sean have in this fight other than being longer?

O'Malley's clear advantages in these fight are his range, height, and striking accuracy.

Sean and Yan have roughly the same striking accuracy over their respective UFC runs (57%>53%) if you factor out Sean's win over Quinonez and Mountinho. His striking accuracy in those two fights are statistical anomalies (81%,72%) in an otherwise very consistent range.

I am assuming by height and range you are referring to Sean's reach advantage. So other than a reach advantage what advantages does he have in this fight?

He has a big reach disadvantage, but he moves in and out very well, and tends to find his range and pick it up as the fight moves forward.

So you are stating Yan has demonstrated he can work around reach deficits and thus negate Sean's only advantage?

I think this is a difficult fight to call; far more than people are making it out to be, though obviously it is an enormous step up in competition for Sean. I'm going to go out on a limb and say O'Malley shocks the world.

Why is it a difficult fight to call then if according to you Sean's only advantage was his reach which you also say Yan has demonstrated he can work around? If one fighter has seemingly all the advantages, in every phase, then isn't it a pretty easy fight to call in Yan's favor?

That's a good question. I hope TS answers.

Yan is a lot better fighter you just said it. If he's smart he can probably wrestle Sean to victory as there is a gap there in skill. Though Petr doesn't seem to have the highest fight IQ and is prone to fighting emotionally. I'm very interested in this fight can't wait.

o'malley didn't look impressive at all against pedro. which makes me feel yan will give him alot of problems.

yan's issue is getting started in round 1. he can't afford to make these rounds look ambiguous.
"Yan's issue is getting started in round 1. He can't afford to make these rounds look ambiguous."
It's more than that. I love Yan but his style isn't great for 3 rounds fights and he's fighting a guy that can steal a round or 2 if the night goes his way. Yan usually takes a round to make his reads. He's very good technically, especially his boxing. He's tough, has power, very good cardio and a good chin. He's good at turning it up and hurting people and taking over fights in the later rounds. Where he is weak is he isn't a great point fighter. What I mean by this is he isn't fighting to rack up points. He's trying to hurt you in there. I expect O'Malley to be very aware of winning rounds on points. It's not out of the realm of possibility that O'Malley steal a couple of rounds and wins the fight.

Here is my take on this fight: Yan is the better wrestler and striker and has fought beaten better fighters than O’Mally has lost too. Sean has a big range advantage and has knockout power if he isn’t getting massive pressure. Massive pressure is coming his way.
