Television X-MEN '97 (Alleged Details on Showrunner's Firing, post #813)

Intro to time travel/multiverse

They've been doing time travel since halfway through the 1st season of the OG X-Men series, and the 1st season of X-Men '97, both with Cable.

Hopefully they won't be bringing in a multiverse into this canon.

Time Travel + Multiverse = Complete clusterfuck.

Just look at the MCU to see why.
Short version = 'Oh something bad happened, lets go back into the past to fix it. Or lets bring something over from another universe as a Deus Ex Machina.'

Marvel Fires Back Over X-MEN ’97 Creator’s Claim He Was “Stripped” of Season 2 Credit, Cites “Egregious” Investigation Findings

Five months after Marvel Studios fired X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo for mysterious reasons, the writer claimed Thursday he no longer will get credit on the second season of the hit Disney+ show, which he completed work on before his exit. DeMayo made the claim on social media, saying it was part of a “troubling pattern” he endured while working for Marvel.

Marvel shot back soon after, and in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, gave insight into his firing, saying it occurred after an internal investigation revealed “egregious” findings.

“Above is #XMen fan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post,” DeMayo wrote on X Thursday, along with an illustration of a shirtless version of himself as the superhero Cyclops.

DeMayo, who spent several years at Marvel working on a draft of a long-gestating Blade feature as well as on the TV show Moon Knight, added: “Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while on working on #XMen97 and #Blade.”

Marvel responded by saying that DeMayo’s behavior was the cause of his firing and for him losing his credits.

“Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation,” said a Marvel spokesperson in a statement. “Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

Sources say that following his exit, an agreement was reached between the two parties over the issue of tweeting about the show, something that DeMayo had continued to occasionally do. In light of the breeches, his credit for season two was removed. While no details of the cause of the termination or the internal reviews have surfaced, sources say it involved sexual misconduct.

DeMayo was an avid social media user during his tenure at Marvel, sharing X-Men tidbits as well as shirtless pics of himself, and even running a non-explicit OnlyFans account. This all led the LGBTQ publication Out to declare him “the Sexy, Gay Marvel Writer & Showrunner to Know.”

On the surface, the notion that Marvel would strip DeMayo of a credit due to a social media post would stretch credulity, as outside observers note the gay Pride illustration is similar to any number of posts he made while employed at Marvel. And fired Marvel executive Victoria Alonso retained credit on projects she previously worked on following her exit in 2023. But the reveal of an internal investigation points to deeper causes.

Honestly even if it was for the tweets I wouldn't care, they did the same to Gina, and until they invite her back turnabout is fairplay

That's the weird thing.
The reasons she was fired are quite obvious, so lets not go into them or else this will turn into a Warroom thread repeating talking points from 2+ years ago.

Here, we have a situation about a *Gay *Black (diversity points) man who was unceremoniously fired from Disney under mysterious circumstances. After he was fired the show was released and its the best received show that Disney has released on their streaming platform... AND was the best received comic-book adaptation concent since Avengers Endgame.

The show is so highly regarded amongst those who have seen it that there's questions if the sequel-seasons could possibly maintain their quality under another showrunner.

There's been some very... questionable... personelle within Disney that continued to work with them even after their... questionable... background and agenda came to light.

So, the big question is what could have led to his unceremonious firing?

Are we looking at the gay Josh Wheton?

Lol, maybe. But I remember seeing a rumor that Marvel was reversing course after a poor phase four and dismissing a lot of the more "woke" creatives. If there is any truth to that rumor I could see them looking for an excuse despite the success of the show. I don't think it was particularly groundbreaking in regards to their ability to replicate the success without him, if anything much of its success was about not straying too far from what made the original show a success

if anything much of its success was about not straying too far from what made the original show a success

...actually, it strayed pretty far from what made the original show a success.

I actually watched the first four seasons of the original show in the run-up to '97 and... its a mixed bag. In some ways its aged brilliantly, and other ways its a reminder it was just a typical saturday morning cartoon with the main purpose to sell toys to kids.

Pretty sure I made a number of posts about it in this thread dozens of pages back.

And with the marketing bits to promote the show there were hints it was going to be 'woke.' So I went in with very low expectations.

And... well.. if my praise of 'best comic book content since Endgame' wasn't enough, the vast majority of the changes were improvements.

X-Men '97 isn't Season 6 of the original show, its a sequel series of the original show.

I mean nostalgia was a big theme in a lot of the positive reviews, that's not exactly doing the same thing per se, but it's still a path I bet Disney execs think they can follow with others

Disney was willing to quietly sweep this under the rug. I think DeMayo made a mistake making this a public feud, especially if this sexual harassment allegations are true (which I'm leaning towards being true). DeMayo probably asked for a big settlement but the company declined and now we're here.

This particular case must be handled carefully but all the other times it's crucify first, ask questions later lmao

Yup.

I hereby retract my 'Beau DeMayo should return to helm X-Men '97's second season' opinion.

In fact he should seek serious sex therapy before even getting the opportunity to work in the entertainment industry.
