Multiplat Wuchang: Fallen Feathers **Out now

I hope people don’t give up on this game because of performance. I finished the next two areas after the forest and I still think it’s great. I love the locations in this game. Some of them are terrifying. The whole game has been very immersive so far because of how well made these areas are. Definitely the best thing about the game imo. There are some frustrating things though like how many enemies come out of nowhere or drop from ceilings. A lot of traps too that give you nasty status effects. It’s really like old school dark souls and less like their most recent stuff.
I'm not going to lie: you are really tempting me to pull the trigger here, lol. Darn good stuff.

Nice, looks like they put out two patches now. What are your specs and what are the settings you're running at, if you don't mind?

Ryzen 5600X
RTX 3070 Ti
32GB RAM

IIRC it's a mix of high and medium with DLSS on, running at 1440p the framerate looked smooth to the eye, but I didn't have an FPS counter on.

I like the look of this watching gameplay videos. I'll probably get it at some point here soon.

Playing on PC and it seems to run fine for me. Didn't play before the first patch, so I don't really know how much that improved things.
Multiple patches already. It appears the greatest issue that it is just such a demanding game, and upscaling tech optimization either doesn't exist, or it's bad. The game has stellar, incredibly demanding graphics, so it needs to be a bit better optimized: at least with upscaling. You can always check DSO Gaming for write-ups on PC optimization:

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Benchmarks & PC Performance Analysis

DSO Gaming said:
At 1440p/Max Settings, the only GPUs that were able to run WUCHANG smoothly were the NVIDIA RTX 4090 and the RTX 5090. The NVIDIA RTX 5080, AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX, and RX 9070XT were below 60FPS at all times. So, good luck running this game without an upscaling tech.
The big issue is there is no FSR 3 or XeSS 2 support, and even DLSS optimization is horrible.
DSO Gaming said:
With DLSS 4 Quality you can achieve constant 60FPS on the NVIDIA RTX 5090. However, this is one of the few games in which DLSS 4 Quality is noticeably worse than DLAA. All of the game’s shadows look more aliased with DLSS 4 Q than with DLAA. This is the first time I’ve seen something like that...
and
For example, if some characters start talking in the distance while you’re exploring, the game will turn off Frame Generation. Once they stop talking, it turns it back on. But turning Frame Gen off and on like this causes the game to stutter. You can see this problem in our video at the 5:33 mark. The frame rate drops from 110FPS at 8K down to 42FPS when the characters start talking. Because of this, the game is completely unplayable with Frame Gen turned on. We’ve already told NVIDIA and Leenzee about it, so hopefully they will fix it in a future update.
At first I assumed the Playstations must be using their more rare PSSR tech, and the developers went out of their way to support that, but I noticed Xbox Series X owners are saying it's generally okay, same as most PS5 Pro users, so I guess that isn't it. Maybe the consoles are just running FSR 2. It's not like even PS5 Pro owners haven't noticed issues:

That's understandable. One wouldn't think the PS5 Pro, as mighty as it is, would be able to run it stably at 60fps without upscaling (since a 7950X3D + 9070 XT can't). There's a possibility system RAM in PCs is limiting, and the much faster (V)RAM in the PS5, Series X, and PS5 Pro is what is helping them keep up. But more likely the consoles are simply dropping down to a lower resolution, and using older, less sophisticated upscaling technologies that sacrifice image quality. After all, the older 7900 XTX can run it above 60fps with no upscaling once you drop it below 1080p. When I look at PC vs. PS5 Pro comparison videos, that's what I'm seeing. It's immediately noticeable in comparison vids like the below when you look at things like the grass, for example.

Ironically, that's exactly what the most recent PC patch did. The developers figured, "We'll just turn down the resolution, it will run more smoothly, people will be happy." They're right, but it's funny how many are throwing a tantrum over that.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Is One of the Best-Looking PC Games, but Patch 1.4 Breaks Resolution Scaling

I don't want to be too dismissive. For a game to be pummeled as much as it has on Steam indicates ALL issues can't be solved with something as simple as just turning down settings. But I noticed it's only getting 3.59* on the Playstation store, and relative to the acclaim from reviewers for the game, in consideration of PS Store ratings for similarly acclaimed games in the past from the same genre (ex. Wukong at 4.51*), that would indicate issues are mutliplatform in nature, and causing frustration to all.

Indications are the best experience is still on PCs. Just extremely expensive PCs. Unlike me, DSO Gaming hasn't spared sharp words for what it perceives to be spoiled gamers and social media attention-seekers. It shared screenshots like the below to demonstrate what the game looks like on the best rigs.

REPOST FROM STEAM PAGE

Dear Players,

First and foremost, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone for their continued patience and understanding regarding the recent issues surrounding the launch of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Your experience and feedback is so valuable foundation for our team. We will provide a comprehensive explanation about the game content soon.

Since the game's launch, we have been closely monitoring all community channels. Every voice—from criticism to suggestions—has been received, carefully listened to, and actively discussed to find solutions.

Below are the planned adjustments that have attracted significant player attention:

  • Regarding Pre-order Rewards and Future Compensation
In the July 25 update, there were errors in distributing and retrieving pre-order rewards, resulting in players not successfully receiving their rewards. We also received feedback that the compensation for Deluxe Edition players was insufficient.

As a token of appreciation for your early support and to make amends for our oversight, we will provide additional compensation to all Deluxe Edition owners:

Steam Deluxe Edition : in addition to the single costume as compensation, there will be 3 extra sets of Deluxe costumes + 4 weapons. Standard and Deluxe Editions holders will additionally obtain 3 headgear items across all platforms.

  • Regarding Performance and Game Optimization
We will continue to optimize performance issues and will keep adjusting the game based on your suggestions—such as difficulty levels and boss encounters—in upcoming patches. Here is a preview of our recent optimization efforts:

Fix crashes across different devices Improve frame rates and reduce lag on certain graphics cards Optimize default settings for some graphics cards Correct the speed of getting up after being knocked down Reduce damage and the number of some traps Lower impact resistance of certain low-level monsters Reduce exploration pressure in some areas Fix issues caused by missing items leading to quest interruptions Improve AI logic for monsters and bosses Enhance texture quality in low-resolution areas Improve asset detail and precision in some regions

We deeply value every player’s support and encouragement. We are actively reflecting on our workflows and striving to improve our capabilities to deliver higher-quality services more efficiently.

We ask for your patience as we tackle these optimizations step by step. We hope that one day, both our work and our team will prove worthy of your expectations.

Sincerely, The Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Team

You using a controller to play?

Runs great on PC, not sure what is happening for others

On content alone it is easily worth 50 dollars.

It's super hard to recommend any of these games though even if I love it simply because this community seems so split on which ones are good and which are bad.

I can definitely see some people getting frustrated with the lack of quality of life improvements that we've seen implemented in many of these titles over the last few years. This game still has long runs between shrines, dying to some bosses requires you to take a slow elevator twice or go down a ladder, cheap kills from enemy placement or traps, really weird difficulty spikes, etc. That's why I say it has a very old school feel to it. I will try to see it to the end. I'm currently stuck on the Chapter 1 end boss but still enjoying the game because I think it has some of the best level design in a Soulslike. I actually just realized I missed an entire area with a boss fight and went back to do that two days ago. I missed a path that led to a huge village area. A lot of branching paths in this game.

Nah, game is actually good. PC nerds review bombing is all.
You can't review bomb on Steam. One has to have purchased the game to review it.

I don't think that fairly conveys what's happening. The developers bear a bit more responsibility in this than that. After all, they have the GTX 1060 & RX 580 (from 2016) listed for the "Minimum" specs, these significantly weaker than the base PS5 or Xbox Series X, and the RTX 2070 / RX 5700 / ARC A750 for "Recommended". Yet the DSO analysis I provided above shows that Hi-Fi upscaling technologies either aren't supported or simply make things worse, but even the RTX 2080 Ti has minimums just above 30fps at 1080p. Less than 5% of PCs out there can run this game at 1080p 60fps+ on Max settings, and again, an issue is there isn't a huge difference in framerate between Medium and Max settings. Then there are some additional issues like Traversal stutters.

It's tough to blame gamers for not liking a game they can't really play. Although, yes, it's ironic that PC gamers have long whined "When will we get another Crysis?", but when they get one, they hate it, because their shitty rig can't run it.

Is anyone actually playing this besides me? I’m at Honglan. She’s been kicking my butt

Im walled between the gluttonous beast and the centipede
The beast telegraphs his moves and I beat it on the second attempt. Centipede is probably the second most difficult boss of chapter 1. My advice would be to take advantage of the rocks. If it hits one of those he gets electrocuted and goes down for a bit. When it burrows underground wait for the color to change to orange right as it’s about to emerge and dodge, then quickly go in for a hit or two before it burrows again. When it uses magic just run on a circle and they usually avoids it. It’s a fight that requires patience. When he does his long combo string of claw attacks I back up and wait for it to jump and then as he jumps I sidestep and attack his side a bit and back away again.

What weapon are you using?

I switched to that and cleared both bosses quickly. Now Im at the lady in the water, commander something. Shes an obvious skill check. Walled here.
I beat that bitch finally. I'm not going to lie I ended up making my character way more powerful by farming at Lightzen Temple and clearing out the surrounding enemies over and over. Got myself up to level 45. It was worth it because I can take a couple extra hits and survive. The key is learning how to parry, I don't know how I'd beat her without it as she always seems to break my combos with massive damage.

I'll give you another huge tip. Try to look for the +5 stat nodes. Obviously since you're using longsword you're probably already in the longsword skill tree but I advise you to put a couple of points into the spear tree. If you point a single point into the skill tree of spears there are two nodes that appear to the left and right. One is +5 to agility and the other is +5 to strength. That's all you need to spend. For 3 points you get + 10 in stats which boosts defense and offense. No need to go any further in the that tree but very much worth it for just 3 points.
