What’s really interesting is that the Hawaiian Kingdom was much more interested in genealogy than race. Which, as time has now gone on, maybe actually increased racial animosity.

Whether someone was English, Chinese, Belgian or Hawaiian they would be judged by their class and profession in society rather than race. A Belgian priest or Chinese merchant would upon arrival already be a higher caste than a Hawaiian laborer. The higher casts of Hawaiian society were much more comfortable marrying a foreigner from their own class or higher, and mixing with lower class Hawaiians was already taboo. So as time went on the Hawaiian royalty became more white, the higher casts became more Asian and white, and the lowest class stayed the “most Hawaiian.”

Now, the sort of demonization of white people I don’t think really occurred until after white people illegally overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy. Then began to ban the language and religious practices and so on. By that point having any Hawaiian blood became worse than being white and the imported racial caste system of the USA was truly here.

I am not an expert here but IIRC those “nationalist “ liberation movements, especially the ones in the developing world were based on a “freeing” a country from oppression (the imperialism you spoke of) and very little of the ideology was based on ethnic / racial Identity or the idea that people of a feather should flock together. Many of the movements were based on the idea that they would work with other such “national movements” as brothers. I am sure it got mixed up in some places, especially in MENA (no offense) but that’s how I recall it.

Pretty good point from an American perspective. These are the gems that usually deliver.

One of the best shows I've seen in that genre is The Fall:

The Fall was great. Not sure I finished it though. UK Crime Dramas are on a different level than US Crime Drama. They produce a lot of stuff that is on par with True Detective and The Wire, while American shit, especially Network stuff, is mediocre.

Agreed, the US have a few amazing shows but then a lot of sub-par crap.
