I really liked both, probably liked Song to Song more since there was a more coherent plot whereas Knight of Cups feels like it wanders a bit. I also thought Song to Song dealt with the break up, time apart, an reconnecting better than pretty much any other romance movie I've seen.

I like both more than To the Wonder which is probably my least favorite Malick film.

Except for the visuals this is how I feel (perhaps more justifiably) about Linklater. Put it on, doze off to the soothing convos, don't think too hard about it.

I don't watch for the plot but if there's too little plot connecting the various scenes together it can make the movie feel like its dragging on too much. His most recent film has more of a traditional plot despite being full of Malick visuals and aesthetics and I think it helps. Its three hours but flows better than some of his shorter but more experimental films.

I want to defend him against your claim of pretentiousness but alas I can't, I can only say that I adore how he generates meaning through imagery but I can't deny that its a bit much at times.
