Depression and anxiety are 2 sides of the same coin, but xanax, and benzos in general, are not used to treat depression. They are oftentimes used in combination with antidepressants and other drugs to treat mental disorders, but not as monotherapy for depression.

Its complicated, as you obviously know. Much like opioids, benzodiazepines are incredibly effective so doctors lean on them heavily (too heavily) to help their patients.
If not for the opioid crisis, people would be talking about the benzo crisis we have in this country.
