Netflix had a doc with Seymour Hersh and one of the portions was the revealing of the My Lai massacre. I never read too much on nam and didn’t know about these events at all. Seems fucking crazy you had soldiers being interviewed saying, “yep, I shot women, children, infants but I was following orders” and then leadership saying they had to meet VC kill quotas (so just kill civilians) and no one really was punished for it. I think the only guy who did get charged served 3 1/2 years under house arrest. Crazy shit.

For sure some crazy shit happened, unspeakable war crimes. But woe to the GI who got captured by the VC as well.
They faced brutal treatment from their captors, including the painful “Rope Trick” which resulted in dislocation of shoulders and elbows.

Yea, wasn’t it John McCain permanently couldn’t lift his arms shoulder length because of his time as a POW? Could be mixing that up but bunch of torture shit. I don’t get though any logic for mowing down civilians. They are simply there and non-combatants. For soldiers, there definitely needs to be rules of war on prisoners and VC didn’t give a fuck about that.

Yeah, McCain was in that place they called the Hanoi Hilton. He broke his arm and his leg and they refused med service for days and days until they found out his old man was somebody important.
Some prisoners were literally beaten to death in strict violation of the Geneva Convention.

Can’t imagine the mindset you’d have to keep to survive in any of these types of camps. People dying around you and you possibly staying around just out of some luck if you can even call it that. Then your body getting in worse and worse condition, not knowing if you are enduring all this to have had a slow miserable death or one day see freedom again. I worry we are forgetting how horrible humanity to can be to itself and how much worse things can be.

The mindset you speak of is next level concentration, and commitment to survival.
I can’t help but believe it somehow scars your personality and consciousness thereafter.
People can be disgustingly inhuman to one another.
disappointing and depressing.
During my career the thing that got to me most was the dead bodies. Homicide was bad enough, but the suicides were just ridiculous.
Overdosing on pills is one thing, but people love to put guns in their mouths and don’t get me started on the hanging and other mayhem.

But yeah, let’s focus on generosity and empathy for the time being.

- My mom passed away 15/12. Four days before her 77 birthday. She got really sick two days before her passing, the kidneys were compromized, and she was going to lose her feets and do a tracheotomiy(i aint searching the right way to spell). Só was the best for her to rest. I am like a caged lion, been taking care of her for the last 13 years, the last five were when she got more depending of me, now i dont know what to do.

You guys read that several times before, but Live your life at fullest, we only have one.

Both my parents went in similar fashion.
Props to you for such devotion.
