The highly trained people were ambushed and almost the entire team wasn't using guns, plus by this point the Aliens had eaten over Edit: 2,000 rounds so their numbers would be pretty thin. Still a really sketchy prospect though

First, Ripley lost her daughter (in hypersleep for half a century, her daughter grew up and died without her). Newt is her new surrogate daughter. The whole film becomes a battle between mothers, the maternal instinct ramped up to a Queen vs Queen deathmatch. Of course she's going back and taking out the alien Queen too. Second, killing the Queen and torching the eggs puts a huge dent in that alien colony, plus I'm sure she felt good blowing those fuckers up. Third, don't put David Fincher's Alien 3 suckiness on James Cameron's masterpiece. What happens after Aliens doesn't count. And without the Ripley/Newt angle, Aliens isn't the masterpiece that it is.
