Worst instance of being wrong and casuals being right?

One of the fights that convinced me that I should not pick fights with so much confidence was Mir's first fight against Nogueira. I was watching the fight with my wrestling teammates in college and I was always the dude they would go to for briefing them on fights as I was the team's MMA nut that had all the trivia on all things MMA related. Well, I assured them that no matter what, Nog had a huge advantage everywhere, and then Mir went out there and was the first dude to ever defeat Nogueira by KO/TKO and it was not even close. Now I preface most of my predictions with acknowledging all possibilities; some fights more than others of course.
This was the first one that came to my mind as well. I am not a gambler but I would have put money on Big Nog.

Disagreeing that CM Punk has MMA skills...

If I trained at a top tier MMA camp for like 4 years, I can promise I'd have a better Thai clinch than Punk.

And I think most first-day BJJ students would be better on the mat than he was vs Gall

And certainly first-day boxing students would throw a better punch than he did

I respect that he made the effort, but holy fuck. He's terrible.

When casuals are right it's usually because of some type out of left field highlight KO. It has nothing to do with making an educated choice based on fighting ability of two fighters.

Most educated fans learn over time its fight and shit happens......Conor vs Dustin this weekend. Only an nuthugger or casual says Dusin or Conor has no chance of winning. Most educated fans would put it about 60 to 70% chance Conor wins, 30% to 40% Dusin wins or even the other way around. None of us are going to say 90-10.

I'll be honest, I lost a lot of money betting against Conor in the Mendes and Aldo fights.

Conor/Aldo. I was telling all my casual friends how Conors running into a buzzsaw. It still hurts.

Leben beating Wanderlei.

I remember this tough noob who never watched a Pride fight telling me how crazy Leben was, and me telling him how he’s a scrub and Wand is just gonna take his lunch money.

After the fight he went on about told you so as if he was some MMA expert, it was absolutely sickening.

<{clintugh}>

Hahahaha that's pretty fucking bad

Not really his fault since Punk doesn't have an ounce of athleticism in his body. He was successful as a wrestler since he had a genius gimmick and was good on the mic.

I get that.

But I'm saying...training for 4 years, even the least athletic person in the world should have learned something, you know? Dafuq did he learn?

To be fair, you did show holes in your MMA expertise. Wandy was not good enough at that point to say that sort of thing about; Pride GP days were well behind him.

But yeah, that must have sucked to get pwned by some geek noob.

Not exactly the same thing but Fedor made me look like an asshole to MMA noobs.

My buddy had showtime at the time, I didn’t, so I went to his house for the Fedor fight.

All night I am telling him and another friend (who only knew about UFC fighters from the UFC video game) about how Fedor is a fucking terminator wrecking machine.

Then he tapped in a minute with his face voluntarily placed in Werdum’s crotch.

ughh

Yes but despite all that I still felt that the worst version of Wand would crush the best version of Leben. Leben to me was a poor man’s version of a wanna be Wanderlei, it felt like an insult that they were even fighting each other.

But yes in hindsight I was a bit of a noob at that time too in a way, I would never pick a fight today with such certainty.

JDS vs Cain... on FOX
we are not allow to even tell the story....end badly...

Not a casual nor a Conor fan and I thought Conor would beat Aldo. This is just another thinly veiled Conor hate thread. "People who thought Conor would win are noobs who got a lucky prediction" is such a petty take.

I watched Aldo's fight prep footage and he was so focused on his boxing, like he was looking to prove that he had better hands than Conor. A lot of his interview had the mentality that he was going to trade hands. I knew it wasn't going to end well.

Aldo didn't have the best hands and he's certainly gotten better since then. I remember debating with posters back then claiming that Aldo had elite boxing. It just wasn't true. Aldo had elite leg kicks and knees with average hands.

He played right into Conor's mind games and tried to prove his boxing and that cost him at the time but he's actually developed better hands as a result.

A good example for the thread that I have is Lil Nog vs Sokoudjou. I was watching with some casual friends and they thought Sokoudjou would win because he looked more intimidating. I was telling them how much better Lil Nog was and he would destroy Sokoudjou. We know the rest.

JDS stopping Overeem... I didn't give Overeem a chance in that fight.
This is a really good one, I remember thinking the exact same. Overeem had been brutally KO'd in the UFC and Junior was tough as nails, I never saw Overeem winning by Knockout happening!

I think I remember a member of his gym said that he was next to never at the gym.

I understand Aldo, but you picked Alvarez over Conor?Come on he was tailor made for Conor and the worst lightweight champion in years
Conor had lost to Nate Diaz once and went life and death against him in the rematch.

Alvarez was the proper pick. Especially listening to Alvarez before the fight. "Go in, take him down, tap him, easiest money I ever made." Instead of attempting that game plan Alvarez did was Alvarez did and tried to brawl and we all saw what happened. Alvarez even after the fight said he threw away the game plan as so as the bell went off.
