Woodley's fence grabs (GIF)

Forget points, any fence grab to defend a TD should result in the ref stopping the action and restarting them on the ground.
Take points also if they keep doing it, but give the fighter the TD they have earned.

I don't think it was intentional. It's just natural instinct to try to grab and break your fall .

So sick of this excuse. Intentional/unintentional it doesn't matter. If you break the rules you need to be punished for it.

If I hit someone while driving drunk it wasn't malicious but I still have to pay the consequences

That first one is kinda iffy. It really could have made the difference, Maia only needs one.

Either way it was a pathetic showing from both fighters. What a load of shit.

All fence grabs should instantly result in a point deduction in addition the foul fighter laying on their back and the fighter who initiated the takedown gets to take a top position.

No warnings and point deductions are not enough for how serious fence grabs are in changing the fight. Nobody will be doing them by "accident" anymore.

Not sure if they made a difference in the long run, but I'm still gonna post it because Woodley still felt the need to cheat against a 40 year old BJJ guy that's built like a librarian in comparison to him and should be shamed for it

SHAME SHAME SHAME

Stop. Man...Maia lost..it was boring..but just stop.

I think there were 20+ takedown attempts, & Woodley stopped all of them (except 2) fair & square. Pretty damn impressive, I must say. Considering what a terror Maia has been to everyone else the last few years.

I still hate the 2 fence grabs. Mostly I'm pissed at Herb Dean though. He warned Woodley on the 1st one he would take a point if he did it again... then he did it again a few rounds later... no point deduction.

Refs have to get their shit together regarding fence grabs. Marc Goddard is the only one I've seen who doesn't fuck around.

It only takes one Maia takedown to end a fight. Who's to say those 2 fence grabs didn't save Woodley?

Yes but it isn't natural instinct to drive drunk. Unless you are an absolute moron

Very few things done in that cage are naturally instinctual. If you can drill a high kick, you can drill not grabbing a fence

I said before the fight that I thought Woodley was fucked if Maia could force even a single meaningful grappling exchange. I knew it'd be difficult to make that happen, but I thought that's all he would've needed. Tough to say how much of an effect those fence grabs had, but I'm inclined to believe they were fight-changing.

If you can stuff 20+ takedowns fair and square, but have to cheat twice, there's a high likelihood that you did so because those two moments were the times when you absolutely had to. We'll never know though, because Woodley cheated.

Take even 2 points away from him, Woodley still wins lol

I don't think anyone gives a fuck about the point deductions. That's not really the point.

I'm pretty sure there was one more in the first round after which Herb gave a warning to T-Wood. Anyway that refereeing was a disgrace - a point should have been deducted for EVERY single fence grab. These guys are not little kids, it's their goddamn job to know the rules especially that they are reminded by the referee before every fight. And in this particular fight TWood's cheating had a crucial (fight changing) impact on the fight result.

Anyway, returning to my initial point - imagine Herb did his fucking job and deducted 3 points. That would make the fight a........ yes, you guessed it - a majority draw :D . And I guess the pressure would be very strong for the UFC to schedule a rematch as this would be too similar to the Wonderboy situation. And imagine the, butthurt that would ensue then ......... :D .

This is how Conor vs Khabib would look like. Except it'd be a much, much, much shorter fight.

That 2nd "grab" shouldn't be called a grab at all, it looked completely unintentional and didn't effect whether Maia would have gotten the take down anyway.

TS makes me legit lol more than any other poster.

Take even 2 points away from him, Woodley still wins lol

Even if they took 2 points Woodley still would have won and the fight still would have been a snoozer.

Didn't the judges actually give Maia a round? I thought the official call was 49-46 woodley?

So if you have Maia two points it would be 48-47 Maia.
