Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

you're probably right 😂
I don't really understand what UFC are doing here - I've heard IRL normie/casuals bring up Shi Ming and how she's a doctor that kills people (lol), and her name keeps getting mentioned on MMA discussio boards now of course (funny how much hype can spread because of a single kick in a fight she was losing til then), obviously it's got a lot of attention, so.......... they put her on a card even semi-hardcores might miss (hence why you felt the need to post a reminder, even), against an opponent who will probably jog around the outside and outpoint her to win a bland decision, squashing all that hype for no gain.

You'd think that instead she'd be on the main China card, and matched against a can... maybe even a regional jobber signed specially for a one-and-done... they could even get one of the Japanese hobbyists from a Deep Jewels undercard for instance, that would go down well with the locals, it's what Bellator would do, that's why Bellator is the top dog in the MMA worl.... wait what? when?? HOW?!!!

it's all part of the same slap-dash approach to the asian market as the ufc has always had, really. without getting into the weeds about ufc in asia, i would say that the brass wanted to parlay doctor sleep's viral success into their next matchup, only to find that everyone else at sw would probably grind/wipe her out. enter, the cage roomba.

an interesting comment left on one of my videos, back when i was wondering why she hadn't been booked yet:

The UFC female match maker just didn't know who she was. True story. The Macao fight was early morning in U.S, and even the female match maker don't watch female fights afterwards on replay. Match maker's ignorance cause a massively long delay, until pretty much all the momentum she had gathered totally died. To make match making even worse, they finally booked her with another over-sized opponent. Not "favorable" at all. ️ Incredible business plunder.

no idea how true it is, but it seems at least plausible.

edit, because I know someone will ask: I assume he means Mick Maynard, the matchmaker for the female divisions. not a female matchmaker

(he's actually clearly saying 'great fight' (which is what I want to convey here), but I can't find a 'clean' version of that gif on the web nowadays, and I can't remember what MMA event that was from to make it myself... so uh.... just ignore the words and it'll still be great... right? <Oku04>)

I'd been looking at the list of flyweights* (since Bruna fought there I thought that's where Shi was at) and thinking 'hmm yeah no chance' then I remembered she was Straw and checked the list of current UFC straws on wiki, which includes the likes of:
  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz
  • Ariane Carnelossi
  • Montserrat Ruiz
  • Elise Reed
  • Shauna Bannon
  • Marnic Mann (!)
  • Rayanne dos Santos
  • Puja Tomar
  • Alice Ardelean
I'd say any of those would be a better choice than Bruna, some Shi might be favoured in, several would be good fights, all would be better then what we're gonna get (lol @ 'cage roomba').

*which incidentally, shows how much deeper 125 is than 115 already. Sure some of those 115 signings are pretty questionable in the first place, but still....

bruna seems pretty stoked to be the headliner for a UFC event and apparently venue tix are sold out:

srsly bruna is a mystery to me - notoriously low-output, and then outta nowhere she runs over molly - and then goes back to the low output against the joker. what gives?? my best guess so far is that she is a true disciple of the fighting nerds, who prioritise finding the "perfect moment" to strike (see: bruna vs marnic mann, ruffy vs bobby green, prates vs geoff neal). in the case of bruna (and mayra last time against jas), what looks like hesitancy is most likely an endless repositioning to "get the right shot", much like a satellite that constantly adjusts their course. bruna is literally overclocking her brain while calculating her best shot, hence the look of deep concentration on her face at all times (aka blue steel).

bruna.jpg 1755843806388.png (pls don't hurt me bruna i'm not poking fun at you... ok maybe a little)

what i'm trying to say is that - is the fighting nerds method working for bruna? by overthinking every moment of a fight, it seems to have blunted any real flow that she could have. i'm inclined to think that the nerds' method only really works if you're a BIG puncher, because beyond those "perfect moments" the nerds don't have much else to fall back on (see: prates v ian garry, ruffy when he couldn't put james llontop away)

i suppose it's a good thing that bruna is fighting doctor sleep, who is also a nerd that fights. shi ming is also a cerebral fighter, but her game is to try different variations on the same combo to bridge distance (see: poor feng xiaocan). will that be enough against bruna? i wanna say yes but...
(i swear to god tho if bruna flattens shi ming with a head kick i'm never rooting for a fucking nerd ever again 🫥🫥🫥🫥🫥)

Hirata’s on the comeback trail after her last bout. Phogat, who seemed like a big hope for ONE, is on a three fight losing streak dating back to 2021. Both have fought once previously this year

Robbery of the century, follow the case of Sana Mandar.

The third world is perhaps too corrupt to enable a solid foundation of an MMA project on it's own, alone, without international institutions to monitor it's directives.

Good fight for bantamweight outside the UFC. What’s disappointing is that it’s on Tuff n Nuff. No disrespect to them, they’ve been great for amateur fighters for years now, but they’re not a big platform for pro fighters. It’s a shame Invicta is in the unstable position it appears to be in right now. When Invicta is going steady, the women’s divisions are much stronger.

Also, if Martins can successfully make 135, it will justnfurther show how unnecessary featherweight is.

Strange signing. Over a year since her last fight. Part of me thinks she was waiting for her Octagon contract to expire, but I don’t think Octagon would get in the way of going to the UFC

I believe I've discovered a compelling logical reason for the signing:
JGBPOLF.jpeg

Now watch her get utterly crushed in one round by the first Butchzillian they match her against (well, or anybody else really).

Side note: Enormous duck lips seem to be at epidemic levels amongst Eastern Euro grils. Could probably become a millionaire quickly opening up a lip filler clinic there. I'd say it's a huge 'red flag' for an MMA fighter but one of them even managed to win a UFC fight recently (Klaudia Syguła)

They brought her in as stat padding for a Brazilian next weekend:

One of these days girls will learn: unless you’re Brazilian or a regular there, LFA is setting you up to build someone who is. Sadly, with fight opportunities drying up lately, they often have no choice. Especially with the events being on Fight Pass. You just know that’s how LFA sells the fight to them “hey kid, this is on fight pass! Just a step away from Contender Series and the UFC itself!”
