Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

[MMA] UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Saint-Denis Paris, France
Main Card – ESPN+ – 3:00pm ET / 12:00pm PT
Preliminary Card – ESPN+ – 12:00pm ET / 9:00am PT
Ailín Pérez vs. Darya Zheleznyakova
Nora Cornolle vs. Jacqueline Cavalcanti

Remember folks Saturday's Paris card starts at noon eastern standard time. Brushing up on the fighters today. Hopefully I'll find some good footage on all four of them.

Also will try and watch that Invicta card. Thanks to those who mentioned where to look.

Well deserved black belt for Jinh Yu Frey. She provided many entertaining fights. Wishing her & her loved ones all the best.

spicy matchups - xiaonan has really improved since moving to TAM. ricci looks comfortable pressuring on the feet these days, but can ricci's new found striking confidence match xiaonan's wheelhouse? or ricci might go for a lay and pray approach, a la weili

nice. fernandes had a hugely entertaining fight with carli judice last time so this looks like a more competitive matchup for cong (maybe).

I think unless Xiaonan shits a kidney during the match it is hers to lose. I like Ricci (ok, for more than one reason) but I think Yan's striking and TDD are good enough to carry the day for her.

Guys, I can't believe I'm saying this but Cyborg vs Pacheco is giving me major chills. BIG Cyborg vs Nunes resemblance, I think we're about to witness an absolute banger.

I know Kayla is the bigger name, but the biggest test for Cyborg is Larissa Pacheco. Seriously, I don't think the UFC can match that type of fight with their roster. Valentina vs Weili doesn't have the same potential, Weili vs Tatiana doesn't have the same aura, Harrison mauling another veteran isn't THIS thrilling. PFL may very well have booked the biggest fight that can be made in WMMA right now.

Octagon League tomorrow has a Ladies fight. Debuting Zeinab Jafari meets 3-1 Farida Abdueva

I wouldn’t pay for a PFL ppv with someone else’s money

i agree - watching pacheco dominate harrison in their third was satisfying as hell. cyborg faces a real test for once

biggest fight that can be made in WMMA right now

Going with Perez & Cavalcanti this weekend.

Cavalcanti & Cornolle’s first fight was fun, & contested at 145 pounds, they both dropped each other in the first. They’re my two favorite of the newer crop of bantamweights, so I don’t mind seeing either win.

Perez should be able to outwrestle Zheleznyakova.. but it’s one fight where Dariya’s inability to throw kicks may come in handy. If Dariya can stop the TD, she should be able to outbox Perez with ease.

Larissa/Cyborg is a huge fight.. no doubt. Probably the two most powerful punchers in WMMA history. (Honorable mentions for Nunes & Andrade too, of course).
The Southpaw Outlaw laments not being able to get a fight, blames social media:

Regional BW is so weird, it’s no surprise people can’t get fights.

I believe Nunes has more genuine KOs than Cyborg. Cyborg usually overwhelms opponents, but Nunes can genuinely KO them, and does it to people her own size.

Not the first fighter to blame social media/only fans for having trouble getting fights.

Jacqui 😍over Corny - she already beat her EZ once, she should beat her EZ twice unless the judges have French hats on

Pérez over Darya - extracurricular activities aside I think Perez is actually good at MMA, she has decent takedowns, good top game (vs ppl who can't grapple at least), can throw kicks, even does a few 'fight smart' things now and then... a sort of better Aspen Ladd really (with an OF game more like Aspen's mum... ahem). Darya on the other hand is OKish at boxing but frequently bad at grappling, takedowns, and cardio. She also seems to have wet tissue paper for skin, might be the easiest person to cut I've ever seen... TKo very possible (unless Herb Dean is reffing and he thinks it's still Mexico night and Darya is Mexican, like when he tried to end Irene's career recently 😢)

I'll admit I'm looking forward to it but I view it as a kind of freakshow that is only sorta peripherally 'WMMA' (rather than part of some core 'great WMMA' history).
Most of why I'm looking forward to it is because I think Larry Pach is gonna besmirch Cybro which will be great to watch (and also a potential investment opportunity)

Perez. Perez has decision wins over Smith, Pudilova and Edwards usually by getting them to the ground. Rooting for Zhelz because Perez missed weight. Zhelz must stop the takedowns and box her up but I'm not confident she can do that. From what I've seen of both fighters it may be rather sloppy.

Cavalcanti. Cavalcanti beating Josiane Nunnes was no small feat. Cornolle has beat Mullins and Edwards. Should be a strong competitive fight.

So maybe you guys can help me. Stamp was supposed to fight on September 6th, but she never did, and Wikipedia never got updated. I can't find anything about her pulling out of the fight, so what happened? Did it just never materialize?

watching back the fights on UFC Paris:

- cornolle v. cavalcanti was... not great. cornolle looked stuck in place and I'm surprised that cavalcanti (or both) didn't throw more. plus cornolle's corner telling her to grapple more to win??? inexplicable. that fence grab was worthy of a point deduction too. disappointing.

- perez v. zhelezzzz was mercifully short. I didn't think that arm triangle was gonna work but I guess when you're small and stocky those squeezes have extra oomph, it looked like she was gonna get juice from daria's head

Hope Holmes is also a nice addition to the Atomweight division:

On a different note, it’s not often you see someone who’s only 2-0 sign with a bigger management firm, but Iridium has signed undefeated bantamweight Soo Min Jeon of S. Korea.
