Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

Isn't it funny how Miesha was one of the biggest most popular stars of the first major wave of WMMA (and even briefly reached the heights of UFC champ!) yet now she's back nobody really cares? I was gonna say I don't either but now it's fight day I find I do a bit so... hey (girl, hey) (and I know @JarlSkuld will always be passionate about Miesha). Uninspired performances so far and she can't even make her mind up about what weight division she wants to be fighting in. Meanwhile Avila came in as an exciting overaggressive striker but has also lost all momentum due to a bad knee injury/pregnancy, and having her fights cancelled all the time (was surprised she's actually managed 4 in the UFC considering all I remember is cancellations), and is now also the wrong side of 35. Ho hum.
I remember Avila doing pretty badly vs grappling in the past (Eubanks), if Miesha can still hit a takedown worth a damn I get the feeling this isn't going her way... on the other hand not much confidence in Miesha 2.0 doing that. I guess I'm rooting for Avila because it's slightly more interesting if she wins?
But have to admit I'm strongly doubting Avila just on the basis of her prefight photos alone, if you told me this was a 60 year old teaching assistant I'd believe it, challenging Dariush for 'most old personlike hair on the card'🧓👵

I'm also interested to see how Hardy gets on, always thought she had potential but fought like a headless chicken (likely due to her unstable life situation), which seems like something Dan Hardy can help a lot with. Horth has an undefeated record with a lot of noteworthy names on it though, so I have to pick her to win (edit: just watched the face off and holy shit Horth is huge too  ), not sure what UFC will do with Hardy if she loses given her bad record, but they like to give marketable fighters extra slack so hopefully she sticks around either way so we can finally see her develop (but still FU UFC for cutting Murata )

I been thinking about JJ and her comeback assuming she's doing sw it is perfect for the top of the division.
Zhang vs Yan is probably in the works.

And Tatiana needs a fight between now and next with only Lemos as real option. JJ can slide in here as a name and Tatiana gains more beating her than the lesser know girl it's a nice fn main too.

If Zhang winds up fighting Tatiana, it just means the opposite is true for Yan (although Yan could rematch Carla who is coming back?)
Joanna has been sending mixed messeges. A few months ago she was filling out USADA forms and was hinting at a comeback on social media. Then within a month later she did an interview and said she was hapilly retired and won't come back. I think this was around international fight week time period. Most probably did not pay attention but I did since she is like my 2nd fav WMMA fighter ever.

Doing the work of the LORD in keeping the record straight

now just need to do something about that avatar. 🙂
I did want to update it to the lemons fight but I couldn't find any really dominant shot. So we need Zhang to deviatingly finish the next one.

Sabina at 135 is something I’ve been hoping for, for a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bleda, or Kareckaite land there soon.

As for tonight, I thought Hardy looked fast & powerful, but she did fade a bit. I am really hoping to see her against Joanne Wood but we’ll see.

Horth is a big flyweight but she looked really slow tonight. She needs to improve her clinch & grappling if she wishes to stay at 125.

Tate is almost a certainty for 300 at this point imo. The Holly fight is the most obvious, but I feel like she will be on the card irregardless of opponent.

Avila would have fun fights with Alekseeva, Rendon Edwards, or Zhelezynakova. I hope one of them is next.

This would be the most boring fight ever. Holly staying too far on the outside and Miesha not being able to get in. It seems like Holly has 2 modes. If you are a bad grappler or too strong she pushes you on a fence the whole fight and if you are a grappler she stays on the outside too far. Don't waste a Miesha fight this late in her career on Holly.

Checked in for mandatory @Rizz bonus post ......disappointed. Do agree with comment re Tate vs Holm though, see a lot of people pushing for this, no thanks.

Ferea calling out Cyborg at bareknuckle. She's a 125 pounder so definitely a matchup that would interest Cris.

My fault for slacking! I need you guys to keep me on A my game.

I do love it when the ladies get a bonus. Especially an OG that gave a lot of herself to make WMMA what it is today. Congratz Miesha!

I think fading a bit is unavoidable with Hardy's current style, there's a lot of movement and bouncing in & out with big steps which is not a particularly efficient way to fight. She needs to learn some pivots and stand her ground more so she doesn't get run ragged around the cage all the time.

There's rumours of Joanna unretiring, so I'm gonna say Tate vs. Joanna or maybe Valentina. Tate vs. Andrade should be fun too.

Tate vs Valentina at 135 sounds interesting to me. Valentina could conceivably get a 135 title shot with a single win if she were to move up.

Big wins for Hardy and Tate.

Hardy has clearly improved her all around game and self confidence. Nice seeing Dan in her corner. Horth seemed pretty good too and seemed she belonged there. It was weird seeing the height differential - Horth is around 6 feet tall. Maybe Veronica is right when she said Horth may consider moving up a division.

Tate surprised me and abolutely dominated. Avila got no chance to exhibit much. i wouldn't mind seeing Tate - Holm at 300. If I recall correctly their first fight was for the title. Holm was current champ after beating Rousey. Holm was ahead in the final round. Tate made a dramatic nearly last ditch effort at a takedown, got it and promptly submitted Holm to win the title. I don't think much about potential matchups or who should or shouldn't fight who because so much depends on scheduling, negotiations, injuries etc. I'm more like okay there's some fights this weekend.

I have heard a couple of people suggest this and I admit the chances of it happening are slim to none but what would you think of one final fight between Ronda and Miesha at UFC 300. Both are old and past their primes. They have history and would add value to the card if they vs each other. They both also would probably get one really good payday near the end of their careers.

Oktagon 51 on the 29th has booked two ladies bouts:

Good to see Sormova back in action. She tends to have lengthy periods of inactivity.

Chiara Penco vs Eva Dourthe. Not the first time Penco has fought outside Bellator while signed with them, but with the recent sale, can’t help but wonder if she’s already seeking a new home.

I like the way you think. I'd be stoked for it. Or how about Miesha vs. Virtual Ronda.
