Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

315 is back in Canada so we're getting 1 or 2 of the other women's titles there. Probably one as I heard Belal could headline. Once again the UFC shows it's shortsighted Robertson is Canada's best fighter so they booked her may 3rd instead of may 10th here.

I'll never forgive Weili for knocking out Joanna the way she did, so I wouldn't be mad at all if Tatiana mauls her. But I'm not confident enough to pick Tatiana lol.

I think we're in for a grappling heavy affair that will go all five rounds.

Hahaa, Suck it Wrestling! :) Zhang <3

Slept thru most of the card and woke up for the co-main. Just starting to watch Brasil vs Cong. Fight Pass tv-app still seems to always turn the english subtitles on every time. Grr.

I want to be impressed with Cong but not being able to put away a scared sw, didn't really inspire confidence. I think the UFC should make use of Cacoeira ability to run into punches vs Cong and maybe we'll get an other finish to be excited about.

Zhang showed as much dominance as possible without a finish even the first round she just got overextended once that led to the ez td and control time the rest of the round she out wrestled and outstruck her. I'm still in shock the line shifted to her as the underdog such disrespect. There's alot of talk about her taking on the flyweight champion and I'm here for it, but in think there's too many backed up contenders at fly, and she should just fight the Virna/Yan winner preferably Virna for the freshness. Then hopefully rose gets back to sw with a win and we get a trilogy.
Sad for Tatiana she's overcome alot but I don't think she'll ever get to see gold. I said after dern big win she'd be a good rebuild fight for the loser here and it's the only fresh matchup for dern in the top 10. Dern vs swarez hopefully a grappling delight.

Still haven’t watched the title fight (came home and fell asleep during the walkouts). The biggest question was whether Zhang could stop the TDs. She did that, and then some. Going by the play by play, Suarez was done mentally by the end of the third. Another front runner?

People hate when I get mad at fighters making big rankings jumps, but rising to contender status is a process, and that process needs to be respected. Suarez had two title eliminators scheduled last year. Injury stopped the first, but it seems the UFc pulled her from the Jandiroba fight. That fight should have happened. Can’t have someone fight once in the division in six years, and go straight into a title shot.

joker v. batwoman was a slog, which was to be expected between two counter-strikers. to take a page from my gay brethren - you can't both be the bottom, guys!!

can't tell if wang has the yips after being subbed or is still uncomfortable with mma in general. she looked like she was stuck in a haunted house, unsure of where the scares were going to happen.

brasil on the other hand is always low-output - almost to the point of being a cage roomba:

wangbrasil.jpg

i mean, come on - this is from the dying secs of round 3.

brasil and the fighting nerds crossed my mind when watching mayra fight the other week - are they just another team that's good for the guys but not great for the girls?? i'm not gonna bring up TAM/calvillo/barber/mckenna again (;)) but it's not promising at all for bruna (and mayra) in the future. the importance of being able to train at full capacity against other women is highly important for development, especially if fighting is your career. surely they could round up enough female fighters in sao paulo to make up a crew?

I was gonna say that i disagree...
But thinking better, i believe we need more test to actually conclude that.
Brasil did an excellent job against Molly McCan, which actually showed she had some improvements.
Then we got those past fights of MBS/Brasil.
In the first, MBS did nothing
Now, Brasil also did nothing lol
In one way, i believe that breaks some aura regarding fight nerds, since they were creating some sort of invicible aura.
My way of thinking is that fighters not originally from their camp were kinda ruining it (Brasil and MBS changed camps while those other guys were kinda originals, at least on their ufc run).
But the honesty of things is quite simple: Both got bad matches and basically got frozen lol.
Like i said before, Cong Wang got rocked and joined Sherdog's end of the year awards of 2024.
What people expected? That fight nerds would be so damm good that would make that upset looks like amateur stuff? I'm not idolyzing Wang in any way but that was quite a missmatch since she was simply much better than Brasil on the feet, while Brasil's primary game (and basically only one) was her striking.

i did go back and rewatch the molly/bruna fight - looks like molly is not great in clinches.

the wang fight was at distance and neither wanted to feint or take the lead. so they both waited on each other (mostly. zzzzzzz)

I can't agree more. Dana White always says you should not be inactive in this sport. So maybe the UFC should stop rewarding it then in many cases. I do think as fans we dodged a bullet though because Suarez would have likely been an inactive champion if she won. The question now what becomes of Suarez's MMA career?

She now has two glaring weaknesses: injuries and cardio. I am not sure how big she walks around at but maybe she would be better served to go to Flyweight. However, even with that I still think she would struggle with most fighters in the top 10 at Flyweight given that her standup is lacking.

After that performance, I'm not even confident that suarez gave a better fight than Jandiroba or Dern could have. Hopefully they book Suarez vs. Dern next. It could be like the female Askren vs. Maia.

Think it’s safe to say we’re getting Bia Mesquita vs Hope Chase next month. Interesting note: reached out to Hope to sponsor her for this fight, and got turned down! Apparently it would conflict with a previous media sponsor. Oh well. First time for everything

Sucks, as Macy has been slowly but surely climbing the ranks, and that division needs to figure out the next contender after Pena loses the title

Japanese wrestler vs Korean all rounder who’s moving up in weight for the opportunity. Park is being set up here, so JMMA up to its old tricks
