WMMA Discussion #28

Missed @Xuh in the build up to the title fight, maybe he crossed the pond to attend the fight? Wonder if Carla will retire now, impressive career for an undersized straw.

I've been too busy/preoccupied to do much more of anything than shitpoast of late but all I'd have said would boil down to Carla does have some chance to get her wrestling going and make things interesting, but Weili's strength would be a formidable obstacle to overcome. I think the fight itself pretty much went that way

I don't agree with @Mmmmmmma1234 stock h8r comment that Carla deserves no hespect and did nothing in that fight (and others saying stuff like 'lol destrucion as expected', plus the usual cavalcade of ppl who for some reason can't give Carla the slightest respect for anything - 'least skilled champ ever' (really, when Pena exists!) etc) but hey that's normal for some reason and people do whatever other do...

What I watched was an actually competitive first round; Carla landed more/better shots early (!), Weili landed some heavier blows later; Carla scored a TD, Weili scrambled on top and landed some good GnP; then Carla scrambled on top and also landed some good GnP; up to that point it could well have been a split round (probably with a lean towards Weili); then in the last min or so Weili scrambled on top again making it clearly her round; if it had been the other way round it would have easily been Carla's round. That's not 'one sided uncompetitive destruction'. It was clearly an uphill battle though given the strength disparity. Strength aside you also have to say it was a slick move Weili prepared that won the fight (again, sad that a lot of people's reaction to the finish was dunking on Carla for tapping 'early, to a one arm choke' (?? fake news, was tight AF with both arms) rather than being like 'wow that was a great technical finish'. It's also odd that no-one respects Carla for 'struggling' all these wins and clinging on to the top as an undersized grappler, only to be sometimes overpowered. You'd think that'd be worthy of respect, but groupthink too stronk, must hate.

I didn't see something that says this version of Weili will be 'more dominant', she looked kinda sluggish/got punched in the face quite a bit early, which will be her main test against the next challengers like Rose/Marina/Xiaonan/Lemos/Andrade, quite a different set of tests for her; tho hopefully they keep Rose away from the belt as long as Weili holds it unless she gets at least 2 wins in a row or something.

further re. one dimensional fighters and size, think of the top (popular) fighters of the last several years - Conor, Ronda, Khabib - all one dimensional - that's fine if you can make it work - Carla's striking isn't 'good' but it's 'good enough' in MMA; BJ (before Joanna) she was hanging fine/beating fighters like Rowdy Bec (bareknuckle boxing champ of the WORLD!), Penne (defeated RENA in SHOOTBOXING!) on the feet; AJ she was hanging fine/beating ppl like Moroz (Ukranian NATIONAL BOXING TEAM member!); scrub the Joanna fight from people's minds 'men in black' style and the extreme criticism of her striking in MMA (and much of the hate she's received in general since then) just completely disappears IMO.

Size is a huge deal. What would happen to Khabib if he had to fight someone 1.5-2 weight classes bigger than him who was also a champion kickboxer with fantastic movement, TDD, and getups (the situation Carla was in against Joanna)? He'd be in deep shit. There's a reason he cut so much weight he ended up in hospital sometimes. Likewise, Joanna's TDD made her untouchable at 115, but just fighting Shev (primarily a kickboxer) at 125 - suddenly not so much. Or Adesanya - noone was able to grapple him at his normal weight, but when he went up to fight Jan (a jack of all trades type fighter), he lost due to takedowns. Battling your way to the top as a midget wrestler is deserving of hugest respect IMO.

as for what Carla does next I too expect she'll take the opportunity to get knocked up, seems like the perfect time as a newlywed, age 36, and will have ticked off quite a list of life's goals at that point, that pretty much none of her rivals can match. That's what's called #winning at life and it is just that someone who did things the right way (i.e. not the loudmouth fast track, but on merit, and against the odds), even if 'net trash didn't appreciate it. (in a related note, it kinda bums me out to see Karolina happy at her 'rejuvinated' career; not because I hate to see her happy (surely not!) but because don't think that happiness will last more than ~12 months, if that - and then what?). She could always come back in ~2 years for a title run at atomweight (in dreamworld where the UFC implements that division - although with serious rumours of 145 finally being closed, maybe?) or to make a bit of extra $ with a few fights gatekeeping the top 10 before final retirement. No need to spend the next few years facing physical abominations like Lemos or Andrade instead.

sorry Pascual failed you (for the last time?), but to make up for that I choose Demopoulos as a much more worthy champion for you to feel pride in carrying your banner; nothing bad can ever come of throwing money at a stripper (especially if they accept vCash).

We can't have Condom Depot sponsoring fighters these days, but we can have this.
I'm not sure this is an improvement...

I agree completely with what you said about Carla and that fight.

Also, don't worry too much about KK. Just enjoy the ride. I think she's very aware that the end is near. She may as well enjoy it while she can. As long as they keep using her as the gatekeeper to see who is UFC material or not, I think she'll be fine. Then when she loses again, I hope she calls it a day. I really thought she was going to retire a couple years back, but I'm glad she got to experience the feeling of winning again while picking up a few more pay checks.

Don't do me a disservice. Saying Zhang SHOWED no respect to carla AND IT being a key to victory Rose could have done IS very different then saying carla doesn't deserve respect.

Carla has had a great career 2x champion most fighters will never get there, capturing the 1st title she looked great and
her 2ND run to the title had some really impressive wins the way she was able to take down a big striker like Rodriguez and finishing Yan.
She fought scrappy vs Zhang, carla has always been scrappy I didn't expect her to go out like a deer but she had nothing to give Zhang trouble this fight.

Damnation, hopefully the fight does not fall through in the end. Give Ham enough money to keep the fight, dirtbags!

Lucky I did not pay for the event yet, shall have to wait this out if it's worth paying or watching the replay for free one youtube one day.

Gleat MMA ver. 0 Dec 14th Korakuen Hall, Tokyo.
Atomweight: Maya Fukuda (debut) vs Minori Kikichi (debut)

I just like the name. Classic Asian: take an English word, pronounce according to your language, then latinize it with your pronunciation, leading to weirdness

Aline Pereira, sister of UFC MW champ Alex, and herself a former Glory champ, makes her mma debut tonight for LFA against Helen Peralta. Stuff test for her debut

Le sigh, this is nerly as suspenseful as watching the fights :( Get your shit together nipponlady, and open your wallet for Ham asian organized crime chaps!

It's off :(

Understandable, but still bummer.

ONE CHAMPIONSHIP AND PRESIDENT CHATRI,
And to the end for those concerned
I wanted to play but after a lot of thought
The match has been decided to be cancelled.

Me playing one championship game so far
Never ever on first scale
Because I never had success,
Ashame to all of you
This time I must pass the first weight
Be mindful of this game..
Working hard all week no days off
Blood and sweat more than ever,
I was able to pass the weight on the swing.

But the other player is
Couldn't even pass moisture check,
Couldn't even make it through the weights.
I'd probably be a different athlete
It would have just been a match.
Every once in a while
I think I can make a mistake.
But the same problem happens twice
I think there's a problem with being three times.

This player has done overtime already,
Apologize to overdo it,
sorry attitude, attitude to reflect also
Not seen at all.
This player has a lot of Warming Fails
I knew it but,
"This time, for this time, I'll come through... I guess it will run...
If you're a player, you'll shoot... "
I think I believed it too much.

I wish I was a player who played games for money
From the start, I would have said I would not compete with this player.
As many of you know,
I love a former wrestler
Since the love of competing,
18 years of playing till now
I have never covered it a lot
If it was a match, I did it no matter what.

But this player tho
I don't think he's even basic as a player.
Just because I don't like the struggle
Roughly failed to score and gave a penalty
It seems normal to see him trying to compete.
That's how ever it is
Somehow we would've played the game,
Just this time and from now on
I thought it wasn't possible to do that.

This player knows no shame
I wish I could feel it.
Due to the failure of one player to transfer
How many people are being damaged.
I wish I knew.

Sure,
“Failure of failure is what it is
All they need to do is compete! "
There might be people who point fingers like this,
Please understand this time.

I'm in for this match
I have fulfilled all the terms and conditions of the contract with One Championship,
As best as I can be
I think I've done it all.

For giving me another great opportunity
For One Championship Chatree President and Associates
I would like to say thank you and sorry.

For all those who waited for my match
Thank you and I'm sorry.

I will be ready at any time.
We'll repay you with a good form in the next match!

Dammit. Was really looking forward to it. Hirata did made weight, just can't pass the hydration after 3 attempts.

She looks fine as hell too during the weigh ins, what a bummer.

Anyway, imo Ham (#2) should be facing Tiffany Teo (#5) next for a title eliminator bout. Even Ham vs Angela Lee for the title next would be fair imo as Ham already beat (#1) Denice, twice. Hirata isn't even ranked. It's too far of a jump imo. Would like to see her fight Ritu Phogat next instead. They had an unfinished business and were supposed to face in the semis of the Atomweight Grand Prix.

Verily, she deserves it - and the One FC belt would be a pretty nice additional feather in her cap on the post-UFC "defeat everyone and win all belts in my actual weight class" tour. But I don't think they want Ham to fight Lee - as she is not one of their "own" girls. Denice would have been, and of course they would love to be able to push Hirata to the moon for obvious reasons.

Side note, allowing a fight with one of their big faves to fall apart due to the hydration rule kinda gives some credibility to the rule. Unless of course that was Chatri's plan and they booked Hirata somewhat outmatchedly against Ham knowing they will just use her failure on the scales/hydration it to prove their stuff is legit.
