Pretty pleased with the fights I saw this weekend. Dariya Zhelezynakova vs Melissa Mullins at ARES was a good fun fight while it lasted.. Dariya has great striking, & I love Melissa’s clinch game & general nastiness. I thought the stoppage was pretty terrible but bad stoppages occur a lot more in WMMA so I wasn’t surprised. Rizlen\Iony was fine, neither lady is making the UFC at their age so I enjoyed it for what it was.

Tamires Vidal &, Miranda Maverick, & Polyana Viana looked really good, but none of them showed any new tools & therefore it’s hard to learn anything from their performances. I would note Vidal really needs to tighten up her strikes & work on her wrestling. She still looks like the girl Ailin Perez was smashing on the regional scene before she fumbled her way into a DQ loss.

I didn’t love the ME stoppage, especially since I cannot stand Lemos. If she does get a TS for that I’d love to see Zhang smash her or Esparza wrestle fuck her. I wouldn’t mind seeing M Rod & Rose scrap now, but we’ll see.
 
Pascual is the Elvis Sinosec of WMMA, the UFC brings her in when someone needs to snap a losing streak or add to their highlight reel. Never seen Vidal fight before, but props to her for using the right body kick against a southpaw. I think Pascual was already feeling it in the body before the flying knee landed to end her night.

Frey vs. Viana was pretty short so it's hard to get any clear takeaways. Viana was throwing her right hand, waiting for a reaction, then throwing more punches if Frey tried to step in and it finally worked after several tries. Frey walked face first into the follow-up combo and that was it. Maverick fight went as expected, ground control was good but a lot of things still need work.

Main event confirmed my opinion on Rodriguez. Others have said she's the next Joanna and has the top notch striking to match. I strongly disagreed, and this fight showed why. Rather than using her reach to jab Lemos in the face and setup the rest of her strikes, she kept feinting & loading up on power strikes which mostly missed. Like, why are you trying to power punch with a power puncher who's faster with way more power? And that's what got her wrecked on the finish, she tried to step in with a telegraphed right hand and got tagged with a faster & cleaner right hand in return. Not exactly impressed by Lemos either, she could've done a lot more with Marina being as passive as she was.

I think there's still a sizable gap between Rose*, Weili, Andrade, and everyone else at 115. The fighters making their way up the ranks need to get good fast or they ain't getting a belt unless Rose flakes out again.

as much as I love Rose (as a fighter that is), I never wanna see her fight for the title ever again. instead, I'd love it if Rose transitioned into a gatekeeper/main card action fighter, picking off strawweight prospects without any media/belt pressure. free flowing Rose is such a joy to watch.
 
Interesting reading everyone's perspectives on the fights. As usual I've got my own. Three finishes out of four fights. All four fights were exciting.

Ramona Pascual vs. Tamires Vidal. Vidal took longer on her walkout than she did to put away Pascual. It was actually really funny everyone's waiting for the card to start and Vidal is going in slow motion singing and dancing to her song whatever it was. Then gets the brutal kick to the liver 47 seconds into the first round. Completely shut Pascual down. I mean if Pascual was giving another TED talk that would be when she drops the mic and they call a doctor. Hopefully Pascual can go to another organization like Invicta or ONE and have some success there. Great ufc debut for Vidal. I later saw one of those click bait articles where it said Vidal 'gives the real reason' she took so long in her walkout. Didn't click. If anyone knows what she said about it I'm all ears.

Jinh Yu Frey vs. Polyana Viana. Rise of the new. What a KO for Polyana Viana. Things were going along fairly like it would come down to a closely fought decision then Polyana flipped the script. Bum rushed Jinh and didn't stop punching till it was completely over. Poor Jinh didn't know where she was for a minute there after the KO. Viana conducted herself throughout the week like a genuine rising star. Always like Jinh and wish her the best. She just looks a tad undersized and outmatched. Aging has a lot to do with it I'd suppose, and she's always been more an atomweight. Viana looked completely comfortable in there, before during and after at her amusing post-fight interviews. Polyana Viana did exactly what she said she'd do, with humor grace and aplomb. Look forward to seeing where it takes her.

Miranda Maverick vs. Shanna Young. Super happy that Miranda was able to display all her well rounded skill set. She really has improved on her striking. We always knew Miranda can wrestle. Now she looks more comfortable on the feet too. Amazing to think she is only 24. Glad she had this tuneup fight and passed the test with flying colors. She's coming more into her own. She called out Molly McCann. That could be a good one down the road. Maverick has had her ups and downs and I hope she can put together a good win streak. She looks very smart and aware of the need not only to win but to keep improving and make things exciting. She almost got a finish. Quite happy still with her improvements and overall performance. Rock on MM.

Marina Rodriguez vs. Amanda Lemos. Wow. Third round standing TKO for Amanda Lemos. Didn't see that one coming. But as a lotta folks were saying, it should either be Rodriguez by decision or Lemos by KO. Well they were correct. The first round started out as a feeling out process then Rodriguez edged it out in the last minute. Round two was all Lemos, who really put on the top position and may have worn Marina down a bit both physically and emotionally. After the round I felt that Marina did a good job of not getting submitted as Lemos looked to almost have a sub on a couple of occasions. Coming out to round three I was beginning to think Rodriguez might be able to outlast Lemos and squeak out a decision win. Lemos was having none of that. Really rocked her with those straight jabs and that seemingly powerful right. Rodriguez backed up all the way to the cage. She looked a bit rocked. Lemos went for the exclamation points but man that stoppage was a tough call for all parties involved. Them's the breaks. I'm not the ref and don't claim to see what the ref sees. Simple fact is that Rodriguez didn't capitalize on her time in her biggest spotlight to date. But she will be back and I'll keep rooting for her. Nothing should be minimized from Lemos. Did everything she needed to do. Interested in seeing what's next for her.

I'm intrigued by speculation on potential match ups. The actual match ups even more. There's some great fights coming up next week & rest of the year.

Hilarious story about Fight Circus. I stayed up very late to watch it with a few other diehards in the PbP. The promotor comes on and says the ring was destroyed in a truck accident earlier in the day. But stay tuned because they are now building a new ring. So they show people building the ring. Apparently it was an actual true story. Anyhow I fell asleep. When I woke up I saw the show actually took place. I'll catch it later.

Good to see Bellator re-signed Harding. She's not exactly great, but she's a good addition to any Featherweight division.

I was listening to this interview with Olena Kolesnyk, she spills some tea and really vents out haha.



- She's happy that 2022 was more successful than 2021 for her, even though she fell short against Pacheco. Wants to return to PFL's season next year and fight for the belt. She seems very ambitious about winning the belt, as she has won accolades in Ukraine, Europe, and wants a world title now after competing for 15 years.

- Happy that her family and the people from Ukraine are holding up well, "our men defend our country very well". Says she's been representing Ukraine in sports since 2007 and is proud to do so.

- Glad to have fought UFC veteran Vanessa Melo, says she wants to fight people more experienced than her including people with "twice her amount of experience".

- Trains at Couture (spelling?) Gym almost exclusively with males, UFC and Bellator fighters included, and says Pacheco hits just as hard as the men. "She hits like a dude, I don't know what her magic is but I want to know her secret to be that powerful". No one had stopped her with strikes before, not even in boxing or Muay Thai, claims Pacheco is abnormally strong. Her own strength and conditioning couldn't measure up to Pacheco's strength for the rematch, again claims that she wants to know Pacheco's "secret" to make this "magic" happen.

- Picks Pacheco to win the final against Harrison. Would like to fight her again, but she'll fight anyone. Willing to drop down to Featherweight for next year's season, and says she's also willing to step up as an alternate if Jindrova can't do it for any reason.

- Considers herself lucky that she was able to see a Blue Whale in person. It was her and her grandma's dream to see a Blue whale, and thanks God for the opportunity to have witnessed that.
 


With ONE signing Celest, it's just time for them to sign Phetjeeja. She'd be easy to promote; she has a stoppage over Celest, a win over Stamp, and has an aesthetically pleasing pocket boxing & elbow style. Plus there were Teen Vogue articles and sherdog threads about her when she was like 13.

That’s all you need Rizz. It has a section called Prime Video. Just type in a search for ONE FC and that should do it. No further fees. You may want to bookmark the ONE site too. That will give you info on which upcoming cards they are showing on Amazon Prime.

Where is the evidence that women's fights on average get stopper earlier than men's fights? I'm not even sure there is a consensus that Rodriguez/Lemos was stopped early. The referee let Maverick/Young continue for all of round 3 despite Young offering nothing.

In all seriousness, when was the last WMMA fight before Rodriguez/Lemos that was considered a remotely early stoppage?

Yes, women's fights are stopped earlier than men's fights the same way that Combate is a major promotion like the UFC.

tbf there aren't that many WMMA stoppages that spring to mind. De Randamie Vs Ladd yes, but that was a while ago now.
