Why were teachers so mean?

Really, though.

Like most people, I went to public school for 12 years, and as a student I encountered extremely few mean/unlikable/cruel teachers.

As a teacher, for a little shorter stretch, I also encountered extremely few mean/unlikable/cruel teachers.

There's numerous sayings that go something like:
If you think everyone in your life is an asshole, you're probably the asshole

With the possible exception of special religious schools, which could be different, I suspect this is the likely explanation whenever anyone tells me how awful all their teachers were.

aftr a few years they begin to hate kids. then menopause...

awesome

Why were there so many evil teachers?
Shouty, moody, aggressive, desperate to show who's in charge, violent, smelly, touchy feely, obnoxious. One religious teacher brought his shottys in to show how tough he was and that no one should fuck with him

It's like only the most unstable or unhygienic scum of the earth were teachers back when, proper freaks, psychos

The one who lived with his mum and touched girls when he drank in class
Shotgun religious nut

Quite a generalization, don't you think? Adult education, teachers are cool. Kids are annoying AF.

they get paid a crappy wage to baby sit like 35-40 asshole kids like 300 days a year. I got annoyed having to babysit my nieces and nephews for 3 hrs once. I think there was a point in time were the mcdonalds manager with a G.E.D was making the same 800 bucks a week they were paying my HS teacher who had to get a second job.
They make 45 right out the gate on avg here with great benefits and pensions while working 3/4 of the year. Avg gets to about 60k. Head dept clocks in around 80k

they probably make that now but in the year 2000 they didn't they had all sorts of strikes here to get raises.

Most of them are underpaid and burnt out.

Some of them kinda failed at what they really wanted to do so teaching is like a consolation, so they arent really into it.

A lot of students are pretty shitty too , which will definitely drag on you over time.

And some of them just suck and figure its an easy comfortable job.
100% this

Police Officer, Firefighter, and Teacher all deal with the same shit.

Those 3 government jobs are pushed as "your making a difference" but in reality your a glorified babysitter 90% of the time. Throw in medicore wages, understaffed departments, and dealing with shitty people all day and it's all a recipe for anger for all 3 of those jobs

My aunt would place 2 chairs on top of the cabinets in the science lab where she taught. Students caught goofing around were ordered to sit on those chairs and given titles like king or queen. She was a hardass but every year during the annual homecoming parade that passes by her house, students would wave and stop by to greet and make small talk. They loved her.

Some were mean, while others were nice. If they were all nice or all mean all of the time, the universe would be unbalanced.

b/c so many have the golden handcuff trap. Stuck in a job they don't like b/c of the massive high pay, time off, benefits and pension.

Because the pay is shit and the kids are assholes.

Double whammy

Because the kids break them down. That's why young teachers are pushovers, and old ones are borderline psychotic.

This. If I was surrounded by the kind of kids I see walking around on a daily basis, I’d hate all of them too.

I had some "mean" teachers... And my dear old dad used to chuckle when I complained about it. He told me about being raised in a Catholic heavy part of Germany. Nuns would frequently discipline you with a rosary. A priest who taught him, who was a golden gloves boxing champ, would take unruly students out back, tie one hand behind his back, and tell them to show how tough they were - and then beat the crap out of them. There are some grumpy and erratic teachers these days, but the type of normalized brutal treatment that there used to be just doesn't exist. If you're under 50, you likely had it good.

People who like to abuse authority gravitate to positions of power where they can rule as petty tyrants.
