Why sleeping is essentially dying

Fear of death is just a product of your ego. It's already happened an infinite amount of times before and will happen an infinite amount of times again. Enlightenment is the only way out of the endless cycle
I want to like you post as i agree with the essential sentiment, except i don't believe there is a way out of the endless cycle. Enlightenment may just about make it bearable.

Think of a computer. You can buy two new computers that are exactly the same, but in using them, they become different according to what you do with them. We have the ability to connect them so they can have the same information. The hard drives can be exchanged. You can also copy a hard drive.

The hard drive in a computer is probably the closest thing to human consciousness but we aren't able to transfer or copy it so far.

We arent even alive to begin with, everything is an illusion, so fuck that shit.

Also i would fake my death, find my clone and have a lot of gay sex with it, im such a narcissistic asshole just like that.

The problem with cloning humans or pets is how the stored memory doesn't transfer.
That means your clone hates climbing and becomes a tranny prostitute.

Source?

Damm man. Like I get it, but

Go to bed. Turn off the phone, shit everything down. Deep breathe, exhale, get as comfy as possible.

Clear that mind. If that's difficult, focus on ocean wave after wave, cresting and hitting the beach. Get the rhythm. Replay that.

Go to bed man!!!

Edit: the absoulte undeniable truth is that your supposed clone is not you. Don't say you go on through the clone. You don't. The clone goes on. Not you

Lol. I slept great after making this thread.

Bolded is correct!

If

then how

That clone oughta wake up on its own only when the real person dies, right?? Otherwise they're not actually you if you're still alive.

It should - but the miscommunication of Scenario 2 is designed to show that even if the clone did wake up precisely at the moment you died, it would not be you.

Furthermore, even if you had some kind of experience translator that would let the clone remember all of your last moments up to the very end and then wake up right as you died - it would still not be you.

It isn’t some enigmatic mechanism that allows you to realize a penis was drawn on your face when you wake up. It is the sum of all your experiences and ability to reason that leads you to that conclusion. Just like how if your clone was awakens when you died, and had all your memories up to the point just before you began your trek up the mountain, your clone may have some confusion at first and think “why haven’t we begun climbing yet?” but would ultimately come to the realization that you did, but died, and he was the clone.

Well, some would consider the summation of experience and ability to reason fairly enigmatic.

But regardless, the point here is that the future may introduce the possibility of different conclusions that we're not philosophically prepared to handle.

It is not.
Why would you want to avoid death?
Complex scenarios.
Is the spirit included in this scenario? Is there a spirit? Will this turn into another religion discussion?

To keep living! No spirit stuff here.

your tl;dr, is WAY too short. could you add a bit more?

Lol, never heard that before. Okay I tried.

Suppose they do successfully transfer your consciousness into something/someone else, wtf are you gonna do for 100 years or whatever?

Figure out to how stay alive for the next 1000 years

I think of dying alot when i am trying to sleep. It helps me get to unconciousness. Never been good at getting to sleep.I just try to think of a peaceful death and eventually i knock out.

Sorry to mess with your sleep process. Also RIP.

hmm why did you think penis instead of mustache ?

I would probably argue it a bit differently, but for the purposes of this conversation I assume that the cloning/copying technology has been somehow perfected.

I think we're alive, just that our continuity is a possibly illusory, and we die a lot more than we think, without realizing it.

Also, whoa.

The problem with cloning humans or pets is how the stored memory doesn't transfer.

But is it art?

The whole notion of chasing immortality, or trying to ‘beat death’, is kind of a desperate, sad one, I think. I don’t claim to know the secret or the point of life, but whatever it is, these kinds of notions seem to clearly be missing it. A person should certainly aim to make the most of their life, but part of that is the acceptance & understanding that it will not last forever. “The end is important in all things.”

I want unlimited mother fucker birthday.

The interesting thing about dreams is we rarely notice how ridiculous they are until we wake up. Only with the waking comparison does it seem ridiculous. Maybe there is another level where the waking world is like the sleeping world.

I die in my dreams too so it isn't dying.

William James coined the term "stream of consciousness". Other people saw consciousness as like a parade. Some parts may come and go but the parade continues to roll in formation. James said this is not consciousness. It is the recognition of the parade that is. This is SOMEBODY's parade.

The pursuit of extended life is the rational choice imo. Not to the extent that it takes away from living, but the option should be taken if it's available (granted that you aren't living in continuous torment or anything like that).

The greatest weight.-- What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: "This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence - even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!"
Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus?... Or how well disposed would you have to become to yourself and to life to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal?
