Why Romero Beat Costa (Statistics)

I feel like Romero is constantly fighting an uphill battle with these judges/commissions etc because of his past political expressions.

Romero won that fight.

Romero won the Whittaker fight.

Romero was making weight @225 before the commission stopped him and robbed him of his ability to win the belt.

I don’t know how he deals with all of this and still stays cool AF.

Just went back and watched the 2nd round of that fight. You have to be a massive Romero homer if you give him the 2nd round. Costa was applying all of the pressure, had Romero backed to the perimeter for 90% of the round and was tagging him to the head, body and legs. HARDER shots overall than what Romero was peppering him with. Romero’s biggest success in that round was the meaningless takedown in the final 10 seconds. Costa sealed the 1st with the flush knockdown and he won the 2nd. At the end of 2, Dom mentioned that he thought Romero was down two rounds and I have to agree. What’s with everybody always moaning and crying robbery when Romero loses a close fight? That decision was nowhere close to a “robbery.” It was a good fight overall.

> Agreed, some of those strikes by Yoel were simply jabs. Costa was throwing big hooks to the chin.

I can't say Yoel won, but do the UFC judging rules differentiate between big shots and small jabs? "Significant strikes" isn't in the judging rules.
Yes they do.

<Dany07>

Stipe absorbed over 160 significant strikes to his head.

Won the fight with about 6 body shots.
Damn 160 shots to the head at HW ..........that can't bode well for long term health .

I know I know it's part of the game but 160 shots at HW seems excessive.

I thought you promised me I'd get banned? ya boi still here and loving that I live in that "brain" of yours. do you feel like a big man after ratting me out to daddy? :P

Significant strikes: Romero outlanding
romero: 125
costa: 118

Strikes to the head: Romero landed 43.3%!!!!!! more punches to the head (contains the brain and should be regarded as more effective than strikes to the leg/body).
romero: 96
costa: 67
Romero outstruck costa to the head in every round.

Round 1: both had a knockdown but costa's knockdown was the most significant strike of the fight. Romero landed 4 more strikes to the head but was outstruck in total by 5.
10-9 costa

round 2: Yoel out strikes costa in total strikes, strikes to the head, strikes to the leg and gets the only takedown of the fight. The only stat Yoel loses out on is body shots.
10-9 romero

round 3: Romero lands more total strikes, LANDED 87.5% MORE HEAD STRIKES and more strikes to the leg.
10-9 romero

29-28 romero

Costa landed the most effective strike of the fight but Yoel clearly hurt Costa several more times than Costa did Yoel. I have no clue how the judges gave Costa a unanimous decision most of his strikes were blocked by Yoel. Costa i feel got way more credit just because people didn't expect him to do so well.

Octagon control is a criteria for scoring and Costa was constantly moving forward. Romero deserves to lose acting like a clown and I’m glad he did.

Romero needs to realize he can't coast in these fights man. Either fix the gas tank or fix the style of fighting. He could have secured take downs on Paulo but like what? Just 2?

This is sometimes unclear as I and I'm sure many others have seen fighters hold the centre of the octagon for 3 rounds and lose by decision.

If Bobby beats Izzy:
Bobby x Costa for title
Izzy x Romero for runner up

Unfortunately? Not really, Yoel lost. If you are getting walked down, you better do way better in the counter striking, and he did not.
Octagon control has nothing to do with the result unless you cant determine a winner based off striking and or grappling.

I just rewatched this fight again, and I got to agree. Romero pretty much stole every round, Costa would slow down big time after the first few minutes in every round, and Romero Covingtoned him with a lot of volume strikes that scored points all fight long. Definitely got robbed here again.
