Why Pride Fighters Didn't Do as Well in the UFC

How many UFC fighters are around from the same era as Wand, Shogun, Big Nog, etc

it was a different fighting scheme. you know how easy it is to corner somebody in a ring as opposed to a cage? a lot of the muy thai foundation is built on cornering guys and teeing off. it's a different game when you're in a cage and can't really corner somebody like you could in a ring. you have to take that into consideration

Fedor beat Sylvia
Shogun beat Liddel
Overeem beat Lesnar
Wanderlei beat Jardine
Hunto beat that big dork
Kaz beat Gracie

i had a few..

Wandy and Shogun definitely lost a lot of their arsenal without the aggressive Chute Boxe style of flying stomps, soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent. They could use them in PRIDE but not the UFC, which makes a difference.

And actually, PRIDE fighters like Shogun, Anderson, Rampage and Hendo have all done pretty well in the UFC.

If you really want to compare accurately, you have to compare them in the same era. For my money, the early 2000's PRIDE HWs (Fedor, Big Nog) were miles ahead of their UFC counterparts (Big Tim, Arlovski).

They did fine, they are just fucking old now. So are the same era UFC guys

Pride fighters fell in the UFC because:

A: The ring favors strikers and weakens wrestlers, and many techniques used in one are useless in the other.

B: Most of the big names were getting old by the end. Even the young Shogun had serious surgery that hurt him.

C: Pride matches were usually all on short notice, which limited weight cutting and fight camps. In America, weight cutting and fight camps are enormous parts of the sport. Some fighters (most notably Fedor) never could modernize their training to the same extreme level that a guy like GSP undergoes, and soon hard work was defeating raw talent left and right.

D: Most UFC fighters from before 2007 have crashed and burned too, with only GSP and Anderson holding on to top 10 status. Chael has only recently reached top 10. Other than that, the UFC stars from that era are all retired or doing WSOF-level events.

All of that combined.

This getting trotted out again? Just look at a list of former UFC champs who came out of Pride. There were quite a few.

Let's see:

Big Nog- interim HW champ
Shogun- LHW champ
Rampage- LHW champ
Anderson Silva- MW champ
Hendo- elite fighter and contender in two weight classes for years after

I'd say they did quite well.

This!

But Sherdog thinks they are all cans because they got losses in UFC :)

Anderson was cut from Pride.

How about we make a thread called "Why UFC fighters didn't do as well in Pride."

What are you talking about dude? Pride guys did great in the UFC. Sure there were some disappointments like Crocop, but Big Nog, Page, and Shogun all became champ and are still fighting. Barnett is still great. Compare that to the UFC guys from that era like AA, Sylvia, Chuck.

Pride got elbowed in the face.

So much for CC superb defensive guard when he can tie the arms and still get elbowed by GG so bad that the ref had to save him with a stupid stand up, only to get LHK.

How are UFC legends from that era doing now fighters like Lidell, Arlovski, Timmeh, Frank Mir, Hughes ect
They are retired or getting KTFO on regular basis

Because they were mostly passed their prime. Just like Chuck, Tito, Franklin and Hughes struggled in 2007 and beyond

Anderson didn't join the UFC until Pride was toast. Why would you site Sonnen? He was briefly in the UFC but was a complete washout that got spanked and sent to the minor leagues.

Overall your post doesn't make much sense to me.

Yeah Big Nog, Barnett, Shogun, Rampage, and Hendo really struggled after 2007. Completely irrelevant after that year.

How did UFC fighters from lets say 2004 to 2007, do post 2008 in the UFC?

Not great.

Chuck got KO'd left and right. Arlovski got KO'd left and right. Tito couldn't win a fight. Big Tim went to shit. Randy never won a title again. Rich Franklin never close to a title and so on.

Damn those UFC fighters suck.

I see what you did there.
