Why is "running away" a cowardly fighting tactic ?

Gus didn't disengage once from striking, but he sure as shit did his best to get out of there when DC tried to clinch or take him down.

The way I see it is that if you turn your back and run in the opposite direction, that's disengagement. I don't care how quickly you re-engage. It's a desperation tactic imo as there are other ways to stop an opponent from doing what DC was doing but require the skill or commitment to do them. Like I said, if DC was allowed legally to pop him in the back of the head or the timidity rule was used, I couldn't care less as my personal level of enjoyment most likely wouldn't be diminished.

Running with your back turned makes it incredibly difficult to execute a combat technique which allows you to inflict damage or finish the fight; it is pure defense.

However, in order to stop a takedown from DC, it may have been Gus's only option. He stands a much better chance running full speed back-turned away than going for underhooks and sprawling: That would be DC's world.

It looks bad to judges because it is pure defense.
But getting taken down and beat up will also look bad.

Basically.

I was in TKD for years and they actually said to avoid fighting if you can, only fight if you have to.

Yes, avoid fighting....but when you are in a fight...you dont turn your back on your opponent, ever....especially not to run....lol

Condit had a reputation of being an aggressive, exciting fighter. Reputation is tarnished now.

Robbie Lawler needs to start octagon lessons 101 for these guys.

Absolutely nothing wrong with utilizing a lot of back-pedaling and even certain circumstances call for a fighter to literally 'run' away.

Doing it a lot will make blood-thirsty fans upset but it's not cowardly at all. The British must have thought Americans were all pussies when they saw them hiding behind trees/bushes instead of standing in a straight line.

You are really comparing age old war strategies to 1 on 1 unarmed combat? Its not the americans fault the british never studied sun tzu.

Running away from your opponent in any form of 1 on 1 combat has always been regarded as cowardice. Im not calling gus a coward at all...dudes a warrior, but running isnt exactly gonna win you any points.

How dare he who UFCs not sacrifice at the alter.

I've never seen a fighter turn their tail and run like a pussy cat like Gus did against DC.

That was the pinnacle of a cowardly way to fight.

Diaz SLAPPED Condit in the face and Condit ran away from him. The only thing the Natural Born Killer killed on that night is a good fight. He was Diaz's bitch that night, and for some reason the judges gave him 3 rounds for the gentle taps he was giving Diaz.

He probably should have practiced basic boxing footwork and angles instead of practicing his slaps and shit talking.

I dont get why people get so upset Condit won't fight Diaz's fight. I guess we can trash Anderson for avoiding TD's against Maia.

Well you know when a 'winner' wants a rematch, and a 'loser' doesn't want one, it really is telling, especially when that 'winner' did a great impression of kalib starnes, who actually had a broken hand or something that could more valid reason than the one of 'i wanted to win'

So does that mean Overeem lost to Brock? because he wanted a rematch with brock

The cage should be the size of a phone booth.

That will fix the running problem that is destroying the sport.

You seem to be supporting my own point. Fighters can use any tactic as long as it's legal and it works. If you have a problem with it then that's your own fault.

You call it cowardice, I call it a tactic.

Go read a book.

This. its more of diazs fault that fight went the way it did. Its not like Condit turned into pernell whitaker in there he used rudimentary lateral movement and nick didnt know what to do. It showed how limited his boxing truly is if anything.
