It could be perfectly reasonable to have some in certain places or time periods. The refs can be beaten at certain times. Public perception does limit how much bad officiating they can get away with even in the most corrupt countries.

When I was a kid, in youth basketball tournaments it wasn't unusual for people to meet the refs in the parking lot after games. Messing with their cars was also an option.

I hope things have changed and people aren't assaulting eachother over an outcome of a childrens game anymore.

As far as chants go, "the ref is a fa99ot" is a common one, but nothing about beatings.

Just watch some south american soccer sometimes its worse than a beating.
Are you referring to that ref that got drawn and quartered, with his head ending up on a stick some years ago?

Not him exactly just generally people go crazy for soccer over there. Though that is a brutal one. If given the choice between joining the army or becoming a ref in SA i think i would enlist lol.

This. I've never seen adults get so angry at another human than during youth sports events. I mean, it's just insane! The ref is probably a volunteer or is making $20 a game or something and these parents are just constantly going in on him.....basically teaching their kids that everything is the refs fault and not the kids' fault.

Parents ruin youth sports without a doubt.

One time the umpire didn't show up for a little league game and somehow the parents wound up begging my dad to do it or else the kids couldn't play.

He reluctantly agreed, and during the game they were already yelling at him for the calls he was making.

It's a thankless job.
