Why Haven't Video Game Prices Gone Up

I play the 3ds so my games are $50 and I don’t have to pay for dlc. I don’t think there is any for my games lol.

The only thing that sucks tho is I want a lot of older games for my consoles of the past. But a single game can cost you more than what the console did itself

hey its twitch/drinking night!!!!!

but yeah I just say some older games and rare nintendo games for like 400 bucks when i was looking up the price differences. 3ds games still that much after the switch came out?

What the hell are you talking about? Games were $59.99 ten years ago, and now they cost $79.99. That's not to mention the gouge trick known as paid DLC.

Have you been living in a cave?

I remember paying 79.99 for Nintendo 64 games like Mortal Kombat and Star Wars back around 1996. Phantasy Star IV on Sega Genesis was like $100 when it first came out. Where were you during this time lol

Kinda shows how spoiled we are these days.

1990s - $100 for 3mb of code.

2010s - fuck you microsoft, why does my game need a 10gb free update?

They go up with every couple of console generations or so.

But the real answer is that they have. Now, instead of buying the entire game when you purchase it, you are only buying the majority of the game. Then you’re paying more for the DLC. This allows them to do two things - charge more per game, and split the demand curve for their game into different segments (known as type 2 price discrimination). This is a way of eliminating consumer surplus (the difference between what you would have paid for the game and what the game actuslly costs), and translates to bigger profits.

Essentially, it’s just like how your cable company charges you for different channel packages. Or how paper towels come in different packages, one with 4 rolls, another with 12 rolls. All of that is price discrimination aimed at reducing consumer surplus and converting it to profit.

Id much rather pay 100$ for a finished fucking game.

Increase in video game buying base size and also income through DLCs and Expansion Packs.

You tight asses obviously never bought NeoGeo games.

Lol. I’m watching movies with my fella tonight. Sorry kevy!!!

Yeah 3ds can still be $50 or $60. Although I have gotten some good games for $30. I think my yoshi games were that much.

Enjoy your drinks tonight! Jealous

Because everyone is focused on spending outrageous amounts on micro transactions and gambling boxes instead of paying more upfront.

Lower prices to get them into the cycle to snag them and daddy’s CC.

I wouldn’t pay 89.99$ for a standard version of a game.

And with the inclusion of DLC/Season’s pass/etc. the 59.99$ price tag is just the beginning for most gamers.

Console prices have obviously gone up to tremendously.

Speaking of which, can I still get in on that $59.99 GameBoy offer? That shit sounds like a good deal.

I get them for $70 dollars Australian (currently about 56 US dollars) from jb hi fi. Compared to the movies (which is like $22.50) they are good value.

What are you talking about.. in the 90'$ games were around 40-50$ for a new release...

Damn games for my kids now days are like $60 and that's not including the other$100 they spend on patches and shit..

Games are an easy $150 now days..

Fucking noob..
yup I remember buying ps1 and dreamcast games for as low as 5 bucks the average was 29.99, theese nintendo switch games are all 60 dollars plus tax mario odyssey cost me 66 bucks including tax.

In general, games are more complete now than they ever were on release. I dont know if that is because everyone has better tools to build the games or programmers are better. Some independent stuff on steam is pretty rough on release. Some stuff had to be a nightmare to program. Nba jam in the arcade was programmed in assembly to get better performance. Now, compilers are better and no one tries to optimize everything. It is less work to just require more ram or a faster computer.

samurai showdown was great game

Neo geo stuff isn't too expensive if you stay away from the home version with box. The 161 in 1 neo geo cartridges are nice since it is running actually code on original hardware, not emulation. The sega Naomi arcade platform can be setup similarly.

I remember for GameCube they were $50 + tax and now I believe they are $60 or $65 plus tax. That's a 20%+ increase. That's a fair amount IMO.

$50 in 2001 would be $70 today if you account for inflation.

Also in the late 90s AAA game budgets were in the low 7 figures, with development teams of around 30-40.

Today a AAA game cost 100 times more to make, and team size is approaching 1000.

The add shows the new release for 55 and UFC 3 is coming out next week is 60. Everything is OPTIONAL. You choice to pay the extra money. The game hasnt gone up.

Do you game or are you dense too? You have to purchase the new maps when they release or you cant play anything. It is impossible to find a game in COD if you dont get the maps.
