While I think the ruleset changes stuff, not many fighters are good at kicking. Someone like McGregor, who is atheltic but not really a great kicker like Pettis or Barboza, is trying to make kick combos. Pettis is a much better kicker but most of the times he uses roundhouses, same with Barboza.
One combo McGregor did was roundhouse to spinnig hook kick, he didn't followed up immediatly and hit with the calf but it was effective. Most MMA guys are used to kick in the thai way so it's mostly single kicks.
It's a very high risk tactic, so most guys don't really put work in it. I think Pettis could do some nice kicking combos if he wanted.
