Why does soccer not crack down on diving?

All I can tell you is that I watched that game yesterday and the flopping was non-stop. I don't watch highlights and I haven't seen a game in years (probably since last WC), but that game yesterday was atrocious. I feel like soccer fans have just become numbed to it, since they didn't seem to see anything out of the ordinary until the call that decided the game (then it was a problem, lol). It's not just the falling, it's the acting that goes along each and every time. I was worried that the NBA was becoming as bad, but my fear now is that there is a whole new level it's headed for. Basketball is years behind (Chris Paul and D Wade notwithstanding).

And the big intro game for the biggest soccer event in the world just got ruined by flopping.
Yep, flopping in the NBA has never even come remotely close to flopping in the WC. It's night and day.

Diving isn't the problem imo.

The shit that rustles my jimmies is the exaggerations.

Every tap, becomes some sort of fatal blow, with lots of rolling.

Is Brazil
Is normal.

And yeah, we're numb to it, because we realize it doesn't matter 99% of the time. It's comical to me most of the time and criticize players on my team for doing it.

Also, people forget these games are 90-100 minutes long. The amount of flop you can fit in is a wider margin than a basketball game, ya know?

Like Chilly said, people exaggerate, but as someone who played as a defender, I can tell you, we know when we're at risk for a call. That's what makes guys like Sergio Ramos so fun to watch, because he's dirty and physical. Someone like Javier Mascherano is absurdly, almost venomously physical, but the amount of finesse in his physicality to avoid a call is so pretty.

Soccer is a purist sport, and you have to play as clean as possible. In the world of the uber athlete, it keeps everyone in check. I understand it's not for everyone and the flopping turn people off, but I promise you some diiiirrtty nasty shit happens that a ref won't call.

The reason why many of us complain about flopping every four years is because on the largest stage with the highest stakes, that's when it occurs the most. And the same people complaining about flopping in soccer/football also hate it in the NBA.

Flopping is a pussy ass, cheating way of trying to gain an advantage. There is NO skill involved, sans an ice skating theatrical triple lutz before hitting the deck.

Replay would go a long way to solving the problem.

I once saw I guy when I was a kid get carried off the field on a stretcher because he broke his thumb. I decided right then and there I would never be a fan of this pussy sport of soccer.

A broken thumb does hurt though.

We just don't have enough psycho hard men dishing out the punishment anymore.

I've actually grown to like the sport, especially when there's national pride involved.

A broken thumb is no joke, though. Carried off on a stretcher is a bit too much but at least it's a legit injury.

Who is that, and why aren't they UFC LW Champ if they aren't playing soccer anymore? Just a little TD and Sub defense is needed, 3 months training max.

Problem with replay is that the game stops for a call. It's not like Football, where the flag is usually thrown and the play goes on, only to be either reversed or advantage given.

So, say someone simulates a foul during an important tackle; they've stopped the game and momentum effectively. Even if the other team is given the ball back, the momentum is ended.

This isn't American football, the game is supposed to flow, you start stopping the game for every suspected foul it would ruin it and also add about an hour to the game.

There was a silly rule at one World Cup that if you were injured you weren't allowed to just walk off the pitch you had to be carried, very weird and wasn't repeated.

Roy Keane and he should have been jailed for it. He ended the guys career with that attack. Seems to have calmed down in his retirement.

The problem with diving is if you don't make a big deal of a foul ie get theatrical you won't get the free kick, so it's become almost a "If you can't beat them.." situation. Post match punishment would be better, you dive(blatantly ie no contact) you get a yellow card and a fine.

Unfortunately the NBA made flopping a must because they refused to enforce the rules of basketball against Shaquille O'Neal because Shaq dominating was good for business.

Any defensive player holding their position against Shaq would simply get backed into and rolled over and the referees never called an offsensive foul against Shaq even if the defender wasn't moving but just holding his ground.

The NBA basically said Shaq is too big to know what he's doing and made unwritten special rules. Shaq got so use to being babied and having his way that you see he really loses his shit when people intentionally foul him even if they are just normal hard fouls that all other players deal with.

Anyhow, NBA is really the leaset of a true sport of the major sports league. It is closer to sports entertainment.

Well, it's not exactly agony is it. I've broken my thumb twice, first time was as a goalkeeper 2 minutes into a game and i played out the 90 and kept a clean sheet. Obviously different breaks hurt different amounts though.

Yeah I understand the drawback of doing replay, but it's virtually impossible for a single referee at a very micro level to accurately judge a call like that with anything close to 100% accuracy.

As for stoppages, if a red card is being given, there's already a stoppage. And there will be timeouts in this World Cup due to the heat. So I see replay (and red cards to floppers) as being a much more overall positive than the way things are currently done.

And I mean that for penalty kicks most of all. As long as the supposed foul is inside the box, it wouldn't hurt to review it. Getting that call right is more crucial than saving maybe a minute.

Things aren't always going to be 100% that's just life. Rugby has replays and you still get people disagreeing with the video ref still.

Time outs are a one off for the tournament and I believe only come into effect if the heat gets to a certain level.

As for penalties the thing is, it's a slippery slope, allow it for penalties, managers start calling for it for offsides or any sending off offence.

Some times you just have to let the game be rather than keep adding new rules and complications.
