Does it help him improve strength or something? Why does he kick something denser than his bone?

i mean, ferguson does a lot of strange shit. kicking steel pipes seems to be amongst the most normal out of his idiosyncracies

Tony has some methods that work for him but i wish he would look to improve upon things. That Gaychee fight was just disturbing

edit: i changed my mind
There is a method to his madness. Part of the reason Anderson silvas leg broke against Chris Weidman was that his shins were not conditioned for weidmans check. Tony's shins are never breaking. he may have muscle tears or acl injuries, but T-Ferg might have the strongest bones in the game.

To kill the nerves in his shin and make it harder so it both hurts him less and his opponent more. Kicking hard shit isn’t Just a tony thing.
Lots of people do it. To be fair I dunno if others use pipes. That’s why though.

You’re right, but fighters who do this are playing with fire.

I knew an emt who had contact with a patient in the hospital who did that crazy crap. He would break baseball bats with his shins, etc. He destroyed the nerves as you said, but he also developed GANGRENE in both of his feet from it. He must’ve damaged the blood flow through that area as well. I don’t think it ended well.

A cautionary tale to be sure.

Yeah I think there is a point of diminishing returns like the fella in your story and tony.
really you can do it with hard wood and very soft taps. Wonderboy shows the safe way to do this on his YouTube. Some guys go extreme. Thanks for sharing that’s fucking wild

Same reason bare knuckle karate fighters used to practice punching hard wood boards and things like bricks. To harden their knuckles to make them do more damage.

When Dan Miragliotta used to train me back in the 90’s, he told me how he and a few intense martial arts friends, deliberately broke their knuckles by punching a brick as hard as they could. Then they would move the broken bone around so it wouldn’t heal normally and create a bony knuckle. Crazy stuff.

Anyone who knows Dan, knows this is true. All you have to do is look at his feet and toes.
