Why do internet providers still rip off longtime customers?

Update:
I picked up the new modem and router from the local office yesterday, brought it home, hooked it up and called to activate. They told they cant activate it because there was a previous account within the last 60 days and i need to wait 60 days or keep the existing account active. I said nope, i bring the modem and router back and sign back up in 60 days.
I signed up with T-mobile and should have the gateway and mesh access point tomorrow or monday. Hopefully the speeds are decent.

Although YMMV, shop around. Many people are too lazy to shop around. This also applies to car/homeowners insurance, etc. I’ve been with Xfinity/Comcast for nearly 2 decades. Although I’ve had times where I was overpaying, over the past 10 years or so I always find a better deal. Now a days competition is even stronger so there are actually much better deals these days. Also don’t get sucked in to the ridiculous fast internet speeds. After a certain point it’s just overkill unless you have a specific need for it. Even with multiple household users that are streaming/gaming together don’t need it. Most households can get away with 100-200 Mbps. I pay like $45/month for 200? (maybe 300?) Mbps. There are actually deals out there for ~$30/month for 100 Mbps.

Just got the T-mobile gateway and access point in the mail ( came early )

I don't think i will be going back to RCN/Astound.

I pay about 160 a month for cable, internet and landline. I have HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime as well as Red Zone channel and Shudder.

You just reminded me that it's time to switch from Comcast to Verizon. Been three years.

Comcast was $99 for Internet/cable/landline initially. I'm now paying $249 monthly.

You should try T-mobile home internet plus. Its pretty freaking decent and $50/mo taxes and fees included if you add a t-mobile phone line. We ended up switching from straight talk to T-mobile. We didn't even have to buy new phones. We were able to unlock our straight talk phones and get PAC numbers to transfer our phone numbers. We are saving $110/mo total. And have way better phone plans with unlimited 5G and 50G wifi hotspot per line. Netflix, Hulu , and AppleTV included.

T-mobile and other cellular internet are very much a location dependent service. Yours appears to be great. If you're outside of a city and a good distance from a tower, it's going to be way slower than that. They don't even subscribe new users anymore in my area due to a lack of bandwidth for example.

Yeah, read that there was limited spots available in my area. I just thought that was a marketing ploy. I guess they really do cap customers which is a good thing.

I was surprised i got great bandwidth to be honest. I live down by a river. So i am a good 50 feet below street level. I put there Gateway modem near a window on the first floor and got bad reception. So i put it on the second floor and got full bars/reception. Just had to put the mesh access point on the first floor and we have great reception through out the house.

I just hooked up my computer wired through the Mesh access point. WOW.

For Xfinity in my area it was the only choice for a while. I would have to get on the website about once a year and change plans while getting a "deal" at the same time. Either going up or down didn't matter to me to much I just didn't want to pay the price without having a "deal".

Then Frontier brought fiber to our area and gave me like 10X the speed I had for about $5 less. Frontier fucked me over about 2 years later and had me waiting a week + to restore my service. So I checked Xfinity and their prices dropped like crazy so I choose a speed very close to my own for the same price. Modem didn't work and the had a guy come out the very next day and change out the cable from the box and I was good to go. Told Frontier to fuck off they don't seem to have enough techs in my area.
I believe these are the only two choices in my area as well. I pay a ton for Xfinity, but I get a consistent 1Gbps speeds (usually over), and they have been incredibly reliable.
Everyone I know who had frontier always talked about how shitty they were.

I’m sure there are providers who do satellite internet I could go with but they will never be able to compete with cable or fiber optic.

Switched to TMobile Internet about a year ago while being very skeptical because i play online games. It has been spectacular. O issues whatso ever and no more worrying about going over my data limit. Good riddance Cox Cable.

I'd be happy as hell with those speeds if T-mobile is still $50/month like when I was looking at it last year. In some places where you can't get that great of reception anywhere, you can add an external antenna that supposedly helps out a lot. I was looking into those when I was thinking of switching to T-mobile last year and saw where some people doubled their bandwidth with them. In your case, I don't think it would make any difference since you're already getting very good speeds.
