Of course, studies haven't been made on guys who would replace their 1h of running by 1h of non stop steady shadowboxing, heavy bag, wrestling drills etc.
So I gave your post another look because I found it strange you tossed me a like.
I think you should have lead with this point. You aren't comparing running to no running, but running to spending that 1hr doing other training.
And you aren't saying no running but running should not be the mainstay of your cardio, instead variety and practice that mimics the movements you actually do in a fight are more useful.
And I say, you're probably right.
Those are sound arguments.
I think that is smarter and better training because the 1 thing we are all fighting against is time. There is only so much in the day and you need recovery and everything else. But I think where running really works is most guys can't maximize their time during the day (or don't) and having a routine (same repeated activity with clear start/finish/goals/progress/etc) that is mentally easy to adhere to keeps you from skipping that 1 hr because "i don't know what to do so I guess I'll rest and recover." Putting in the work is the most important thing. Ultimately I think that 1hr of running vs 1 hr of shadowboxing or whatever else will see minimal differences in overall cardio compared to NOT spending that 1hr doing any cardio.
The point is do cardio.
But you do have good suggestions on how to get maybe 10% more out of it (either in terms of better cardio or repetition of motions you actually use in a fight for better muscle memory/control/body awareness, etc).
Honestly, TS, sherdog ain't the place for this.
Write up a weekly training routine where you show day by day the workouts and where to sub what in for running and post that on a training forum. That's what most people need, a schedule to follow.
