Why do fighters still bother to run for "cardio"

Ok great but where are the studies showing that running improves your cardio more than hitting the bag for 45 minutes non stop?
Especially when you add kicks who take so much of energy...

All those guys have more slow twitch fibers, and that's maily genetic. This is also the reason why they never flatlined anybody in their whole career.
Diaz bros are a good example of what I try to say. Imagine how further those 2 would have gone if they took the time they put into doing triathlons to learn wrestling and kicking instead? Not saying they should completely cut off long distance running, but doing that much of it is just nuts.
Diaz bros like triathlons better than fighting.

Well i did wrestling and little bit of track in college so i have an idea of what talking about. You ever hard spar for 5 rounds? Yeah legs usually feel heavier and movements do slow down. Sprints are good but with a little rest like 10 seconds rest and going again. Or simply doing shuttle runs aka suicides. One of the best ways to see if youre in top shape is to do a beep test. Its all running back and forth but at the time you stop you wont feel your arms as much as your legs. Also my friend just doing long distance isnt good enough for top fighters, they also usually do plyometrics, speed and explosive trainings.
In the sport of running. Running for distance is good for building a cardiovascular base. The better your base is means you are able to do harder work outs.

Running is easily the best cardio, you can moderate your pace and push yourself to the absolute limit safely. More than swimming, biking, rolling, hitting the bags, more than anything. You can stay at your max heart rate for longer than in any other activity. Yeah you can hit the bag for an extended period but your shoulders will give out before your cardio ever does.

However, it's not for everyone. Some people's feet cue at the wrong angle and long distance running simply isn't an option as every landing puts undue torsion on the knees and hips.
Humans were made/created/evolved for distance running.

Different strokes for different folks. Usman never runs anymore and he has great cardio. The Diaz brothers run non stop, probably have the best cardio in mma.
I don't think Usman could make it out of a 15 min round with either Diaz. 5 mins is not cardio testing.

If I had a swimming pool, I would use it a lot. Zero impact on the body and you don't even notice working out. Even better if you can swim against a stream. A swim hall near me had that and I used it a lot before moving to a different place.

Because, unlike boxers, they do not fight face to face like real men do, but rather have a tendency to turn their backs and run away when in danger.

Lol, I thought I d be thrashed for this trollish post but I appreciate u guys get the irony.

If we do look at it rationally though, temporarily running can be a way of winning a real fight vs a bigger opponent that tends to gas. Might not look good but it can turn useful for sure

You can fight if you don't run. I run 10 miles a day average and weigh 210 so I don't wanna hear excuses. If you're weak and soft that's your reason. But no excuse.

You don't have to run, but if it works for you then it is an excellent option. Pretty simple.

I'm sure there are alternative approaches, but running just happens to be very convenient. You can go on a run in any place, at any time. Won't cost you anything.

At the highest levels of sports it might not be a concern, but to the average dude, you want to cut off any unnecessary expenses.

I believe it’s to train your legs.
I’ve been running for as long as I’ve been training, for cardio, to loose weight...Last june I injured my achille tendon and I couldn’t run until last week. I started with short distance (20min), easy jogging and my legs hurt like hell. It’s like I’ve been getting hit with low kicks for the entire night. I can barely walk.

Bulletproof legs from running some get it lots don't but most people just can't bring themselves to crush it everyday and get the miles in. Can't hate people for not wanting to do the work. But it pays.

I mean...there are a lot of much better ways to get that cardio in. Combat sports are already so hard on the body/joints, why add to the beating by running? I'm surprised people aren't doing more swimming to save on the joints.

More to running than cardio. Short answer is there is a body hardening element absent in the pool. I love swimming but this is the answer.

Big part is access and ability to. Lots of athletic people can't swim efficiently enough to consistently get a safe and effective workout.

I broke my wrist this summer. Started running like 6-8 miles a day since I couldn’t workout like normal. Fucked up my knee badly, have been in PT for 3 months. I will be snowboarding all winter then doing BJJ, biking and swimming for cardio from now on instead of running

If you never ran you should have started slow and build up, running 10K from the get go will get anyone injured,

Not if you stretch enough. It takes more than most are willing to do.

You have to develop muscle and adapt the connective tissue to the stress and stretching will do nothing for that. You really believe someone can start running 10K every other day and not get injured by just stretching?

How old are you?
