Why are the Nordic countries so happy?

Your kind is not welcome here..

(Have to say that or i'll be fined)..

I'm actually a fan of demmark.. it's like the relative who actually did that shit and have stories.. sweden is more of a judgemental relative questioning why one would do "that" in the first place..

I knew you would respond and I feel kind of unfair and drar alla över en kam.
I feel Sweden is kind of close minded in many ways.
Maybe its Stockholm having no close boarders to another country (?) that is a problem.

I used to commute by plane to Stockholm and had my girl there.
I had good friends lovely people and I invited them to come see me and they seriously replied laughing.. "why??"
I mean... Stockholmare! ;-)

Felt a little conflicted liking this post with the whole great example of ethnic cleansing thing lol. Ah, funny you should say that because as I just said in the other post I haven't really visited southern Sweden. Which is odd as I live relatively close. Been to Stockholm and other places mid-north many times though. Which cities would you recommend in Skåne län? Just straight for Malmø?

Depends what you want to see.
Most cities in Skåne are Danish Kristianstad has the C4 as city emblem since it was Kristian 4 that founded the city.

Malmö is a nice city during the summer lots to see.
But for me Skåne is more about the country side (than the cities) or the small fishing towns at the baltic sea boarder Österlen, Abbekås Simrishamn.
Or forests and nature areas.

Malmö is pretty compact and easy to get around even by foot.
Its a pretty nice day trip for you.
The train stops at the central station and from there its 15min to down town and the old parts of time with houses from 1400 - 1500. And one of the oldest "apotek" in Sweden.

Lots of parks too and insane amount of places to eat.

These happy countries have a lot of crime issues with immigrants
of a certain religion. In 50 years it will be hard to keep democracy intact.

It was not about me believe it or not.
It was Stockholm is better than your place and why would we even go down there.
They did actually come a few years later and loved it.

That "apotek" is 10min from the central station.
Very easy to find. Its 5min from Lilla Torg with a lot of bars and restaurants.
Pretty close by you will find a grill called Mando when Cardigans and Tom Jones recorded Burning down the house they had lunch here. Its been around since the 60ties
Thats one of the good things with Malmö its walking distance (more or less ) every where. I think you could bike from one ned to the other in like 30min.

Dude... Dont even.
I love to hike and its impossible its farmland and farmland and...
I rode my bike 50km Monday...
After 1 hour I could still see the water tower.
No matter where I bike I see that bloody water tower.
It kills me.

I mean farmland can be nice and riding small dirty roads with yellow "raps fält och lärkor som sjunger" is insanely wonderful and makes me really appreciate life. But that damn water tower..

Always interesting to see people not from the north discussing nothern policies and culture. Most of what these happiness indexes measure isn't so much being happy as in overtly expressive and full of emotion, however it's more akin to satisfaction. We're content and satisfied because we have built a society that values personal leisurely/free time, educational opportunity, quality of life, the middle class worker, healthcare, health and overall equality. We live good lives because we treat society as something we share between us and all have a vested interest in. That's also why, as someone mentioned, despite having high taxes and government envolvement, we trust our institutions and things run way more efficiently than the US.

With that said, culturally we're a strange mix of conservative and progressive. In some ways we are very free spirited and progressive, like with booze, sexual prefences/orientation, gender and ethnical opportunity, secularism and we believe in the betterment of society, but at the same time we don't give a shit about what others do and we don't care to know. Janteloven, or Lagom, basically means we don't like fancy stuff or change too much, and you shouldn't think like you're better than others. All that gender nonsense and culture war shenanigangs on both sides, for example, is very miniscule here because no one gives a shit. When people live well they don't have to make enemies out of each other all the time, although there's definitely differences in political opinion.

Just a quick one on suicide rates. According to the latest OECD data which is from between 2015 and 2018, between the included countries it goes like this:

Denmark: 9,4
Iceland: 10,4
Sweden: 11,4
Norway: 11,6
Finland: 14,6 (13 Eurostat)
United States: 14,5
https://data.oecd.org/healthstat/suicide-rates.htm
https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/...te_in_finland_nears_european_average/10324113

All Nordic countries have been on a downward trend the last decade, the US has been rising unfortunately. Newer data from 2020-2021, when released, will show that more for sure.

This tracks. Lots of hot women indeed, love it.

There's nothing pointing to this. If anything our culturel norms haven't changed at all. Immigration policies stopped being lax about 5 years ago as well.

Yeah that video is pretty good. Obviously it's done through the eyes of foreigners so they might not know the variety in society as much, but it does cover some of the basics pretty well. Also Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland all have their own versions of the nordic model, but there's no doubt that a lot of the fundamentals are similar. The people however don't like to be associated with each other too much, probably stems from all the wars we had with each other.
Ewww , You care about other people and society as a whole?
I bet you try to feed and house the homeless too. They wont ever do better if you dont scream at them to get a job , then scream at them to get a Better one when that one doesnt pay enough.
How dare you sir tell us how your society works , Fox news will tell us all about your Socialist dystopia thank you.

I must admit I don't know much about how Finland operates, definitely not in the same way I do about Sweden and Denmark. I think it speaks to the point I made initially that these surveys measure security and satisfaction as an indirect measure and less so "happiness" directly. I would look through the methodology and determine if this particular survey from the OP is valid or not, but Northern countries always rank the highest in this kind of research and whatever issues you have with what's being measured exactly, it's the same for all the countries included. The video linked in this thread about Sweden highlights the distinction between happiness and satisfaction pretty succinctly.

I know you made the statement that it's more about how content people are, that's why I said it's either based on agenda to mislead or unfortunately phrased, but what it is not is accurate, because it's not really happiness. And it's still a question if contentedness is being accurately measured, either, as again the Finland example gives doubt about that, too, or the suicide rate in general in Scandinavia is probably not brought into context in these studies, but that's just my assumption. But again people killing themselves seems like a good and strong indication they are not content with their lives, even though the do have all those factors that are supposedly making people more content than in other countries. So the studies seem a bit too limited in their approach, even if they keep getting similar results every time. But that doesn't mean they may not be very content overall, but it does say you can't really say they are the most content if there seems to be an inherent flaw the in the studies with the omission of seemingly very important data. Or in other words, the studies seem to be lacking in perspective, so you can't really draw very definitive conclusion based on them.

He's a cool dude for sure! I think generally Brits would get along with Danes better than the rest of Scandinavia (Swedes too posh, Norwegians too outdoorsy and Finns too weird although they don't really count). Lol, obviously I'm joking around a little bit here, but still. Oddly enough I've never been to Malmø though even though I only live like 30 minutes away from it with the train. My impression is that Malmø (Sweden) and Copehagen (Denmark) are more similar than the rest of the cities as they are close and share a certain percentage of residents, but again have never been.

"My impression is that Malmø (Sweden) and Copehagen (Denmark) are more similar than the rest of the cities "

I mean Malmö is part of Greater Copenhagen

I would like to hang out in Lapland and impregnate some tribal women. That would make me happy.
