Why are the Nordic countries so happy?

How big is your house in sq. ft. ? I guarantee you American homes are MUCH larger than your average houses over there, and with more stuff inside.

It's not out of the ordinary to see what you would consider "poor" over here to be consistently driving new cars.

I have no idea how to convert square meters to freedom eagle measurements. My house is around 190 square meters with a big garden.

Edit: found a converter, seems like 2000 square feet or somethign like that.

That one is correct.

Im not scandi but since you are a trade guy i can tell you average plumber or electrician makes about 36k a year in my country

Master maybe 40k to 50k

My mom's coisin works construction in Goteborg. The guy works from may to August every year, them comes Back and chills for the rest of the year, and does nothing. It's fucking great.

LOL
Thats the female equivalent to Thailand?
Where old women get to get laid.

I've never been, but I've just met a lot of Gambian women when I was in the red cross... and I was very impressed.

The loveliest refugee girl I ever met was Gambian and she married a 50-year old Danish guy who worked as a mechanic and had kids with him. She was 25 and couldn't even pronounce the name of her kid because the husband insisted on a Danish name, sigh.

I'm sure they'd take care of older, white women as well, they are generous, open people.

I just know that there was some articles about women going on sex trips to Gambia some years back.

To be honest, the older I get, the more I like Russia, I wouldn't really mind it. NATO doesn't care about us anyway.

My Grandma is spinning in her grave right now, and would beat me for these words.

Always interesting to see people not from the north discussing nothern policies and culture. Most of what these happiness indexes measure isn't so much being happy as in overtly expressive and full of emotion, however it's more akin to satisfaction. We're content and satisfied because we have built a society that values personal leisurely/free time, educational opportunity, quality of life, the middle class worker, healthcare, health and overall equality. We live good lives because we treat society as something we share between us and all have a vested interest in. That's also why, as someone mentioned, despite having high taxes and government envolvement, we trust our institutions and things run way more efficiently than the US.

With that said, culturally we're a strange mix of conservative and progressive. In some ways we are very free spirited and progressive, like with booze, sexual prefences/orientation, gender and ethnical opportunity, secularism and we believe in the betterment of society, but at the same time we don't give a shit about what others do and we don't care to know. Janteloven, or Lagom, basically means we don't like fancy stuff or change too much, and you shouldn't think like you're better than others. All that gender nonsense and culture war shenanigangs on both sides, for example, is very miniscule here because no one gives a shit. When people live well they don't have to make enemies out of each other all the time, although there's definitely differences in political opinion.

Just a quick one on suicide rates. According to the latest OECD data which is from between 2015 and 2018, between the included countries it goes like this:

Denmark: 9,4
Iceland: 10,4
Sweden: 11,4
Norway: 11,6
Finland: 14,6 (13 Eurostat)
United States: 14,5
https://data.oecd.org/healthstat/suicide-rates.htm
https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/...te_in_finland_nears_european_average/10324113

All Nordic countries have been on a downward trend the last decade, the US has been rising unfortunately. Newer data from 2020-2021, when released, will show that more for sure.

Many social services available

Free healthcare, free education, affordable housing

But most importantly...
Hot women
This tracks. Lots of hot women indeed, love it.

Give it time. The societies they built up through homogeneity will suffer consequences due to cultural norms changing through mass migration of people who don’t share the same values.
There's nothing pointing to this. If anything our culturel norms haven't changed at all. Immigration policies stopped being lax about 5 years ago as well.

This explains it pretty well.

In short its about the balance off your life. Work/life balance (avoiding the rat race) ,Equality (between sexes, economic etc) and modesty (dont think you are better or worse than anyone)

Yeah that video is pretty good. Obviously it's done through the eyes of foreigners so they might not know the variety in society as much, but it does cover some of the basics pretty well. Also Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland all have their own versions of the nordic model, but there's no doubt that a lot of the fundamentals are similar. The people however don't like to be associated with each other too much, probably stems from all the wars we had with each other.

Most of them don't own shit compared to Americans, though. A lot of them ride bicycles and shit, dont even have cars, can't afford to buy big houses like we do here. 1/3 of the houses here have pools. I doubt 1% of their population even own pools. Most of them live in tiny ass studio apartments.
Owning shit is a liability, and liabilities cause stress.

Why would they own individual pools? it's not efficient.

Here, in the states you want your own pool because there's a bunch of poor people and a bunch of poor people means a bunch of criminals because an economically stratified society breeds criminals.

I don't like going out and seeing people shitting in the streets, or having to worry about stepping in a pile of human shit, or having in interact in any capacity what so ever with some degenerate weirdo eying me the wrong way.

You have to become rich in the states solely to not deal with that literal shit.

This is a few weeks old.
This is one of the poorest areas in Sweden.
There is also a lot of crimes there, lots of drugs and IIRC more than 80% is on welfare.

Yeah you're right. Eurostat had it at 13 in 2015.
https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/...te_in_finland_nears_european_average/10324113

The rate in the US was 14,2 according to the CDC, but there seems to be a slight difference between how the OECD, Eurostat and the CDC reports the rate, which also might lead to some of the confusion.

But good catch either way, changed it. Thanks.

I'd do the same if I didn't have a 15k bank loan to repay, Which is a hard thing to do with a 1k/month salary over here<45>

I was in Toronto a couple weeks. I was amazed with how friendly and helpful everyone was. I know it's just a small part and probably doesn't represent Canada but in my mind that's how all Canadians are. Plus gsp seems pretty happy

In that part of Canada...its like 80% of Canadians live there. Most of the population is in southern Ontario.

I'm an Inuk and been to BC, Alberta, Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec, NWT and haven't met a racist. I know its out there towards natives...but thankfully haven't came across one while traveling within Canada.

But things are pretty bad right now with the mass graves of children that keep being discovered in Residential Schools.
