Economy Why are red states broke?

Why are the states that bottom 6 in terms of GDP red states?

God... You retards are broken records, shitting out these threads every 6 months or so when you're getting your asses handed to you.

California is both the richest and poorest state in the nation.

So unless you're one of the few 1% in these rich blue states... you're living below the poverty line, barely keeping your head above water.

California keeps its title as having the nation’s highest poverty rate

California’s high poverty rate reflects not only its high living costs, but its substantial underclass of low-income families, many of them recent immigrants who struggle to keep roofs over their heads and food on their tables.

The Public Policy Institute of California has used a methodology similar to that of the Census Bureau to calculate poverty variations within the state and has found that in 2021 more than a quarter of Californians were living in poverty or near-poverty.

The PPIC also found that the state’s highest level of functional poverty is in Los Angeles County, which has a huge underclass but very high housing costs.

The ultimate irony of California’s high poverty rate is that it’s a deep-blue state where all of the political power is held by left-leaning Democrats who profess to sympathize with the plight of the poor.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic legislators have acknowledged the state’s shameful position atop the poverty ladder and enacted a number of programs aimed at lowering the rate.

Most have involved efforts to increase incomes of the poor through tax credits, increases in welfare benefits, raising minimum wages, and encouraging union membership in low-income economic sectors.

However, whatever increases the poor see in their incomes are often rapidly absorbed by increasing costs of living, particularly for housing.

Just because you're making more... it doesn't mean shit if everything is more expensive you dumbass.

Oh look at some of those "Rich" states at the bottom you clown.... lol

I think historically economic zones tend to go to where trade routes / international trade routes are. Hence, often countries' economic capitals are on the shore / port cities all else being equal.

This of course then attract the most skilled labor and investment to those cities driving up prices and incomes. Those areas then become more increasingly urbanized, and thus, all else being equal, agricultural and manufacturing production takes place in other areas provided the geographic environment is appropriately fertile and the sophistication of the manufacturing processes reasonable to the labor levels.

Hence, in an industrialized first world nation, big cities are home of the diversified sophisticated industries i.e. financial capitals (banking and investment services) have the big money center banks towards the sea board, tech sector, pharmaceuticals etc.

The relatively less skillful agricultural demands, relatively large farmland requirements, and abundance of food (so much just gets wasted) tends to remain elsewhere all else being equal, and they are a tiny faction of national GDP 1%. And even then, coastal lands might have geographic advantage for certain commodities which gives them another benefit.

So I guess there's a long history, and red states deserve more appreciation than they get because they do produce what has tremendous VALUE to the population just not tremendous exchange value (in terms of GDP measurement).

I’ve been up and down California, and I’ve been to Mississippi . I’d rather be California poor than Mississippi poor

You clearly did NOT comprehend that it was a rhetorical question, and you also clearly did NOT show anyone how it is "false through obfuscation". What is false? What is obscured? Nothing at all.

It appears you also don't understand that pointing out the USA's exceptional wealth does nothing to address the correlation of debt ratios to partisanship and partisan administrations in US states. Yet further, it doesn't serve to demonstrate that the USA's inordinately large debt is a symptom of a healthy economy. Some debt is acceptable; desirable, even, as a matter of investment strategy for optimal returns and growth. That's as true in states as it is in businesses or personal finances. Excessive debt is unhealthy, and undesirable.

The only thing you've conveyed is your blind partisan bias. Why aren't you addressing the TS of this thread? Why aren't you lecturing him if you take such umbrage with high debts correlating to partisanship in states being cited? The answer is simple. Because you know that despite he introduced the concept to this thread, he drew everyone's attention to something that humiliaties your personal partisan sensibilites, and that's the fact that it's blue states running up high debts.

It's blue states "going broke".
ah yes. massachusetts, california, and new york. famously running out of money.

Pretty sure there is nothing worse than being in Arkansas....except for living in Mississippi
Are you stealing jokes from the Annapolis movie, or is that actually a thing?

And I can tell you've never been to Canada because we have first world poverty here.
I've been to Canada but you are correct if you think I didn't go slumming in the poverty ridden parts.

However, I also don't pretend to know what's best for Canada's poor population. So, you can understand the disbelief that people, who live in a country whose social welfare programs pay almost 50% per person more than in the US, have such strong statements about cutting off the poor in this country.

We have more work requirements for our system than you do as well, lol.

So, let's not compare first world poverty when your handouts are bigger than ours, yeah?

Less income does not equal more broke.

CA people make a ton more money but homelessness is out of control and people can't afford rent and are flat out broke.

Certainly looks like California's policies to address wealth polarisation are failures, but I didn't realise the cost of living in Hawaii was so out of whack. Even allowing for their geographic disadvantages, that's pretty awful. I guess California's still significantly better than New York for both polarisation and cost of living adjusted median income.
Didn't realise Utah was topping the charts in terms of median income adjusted for cost of living and wealth polarisation as well. Looks like the Mormons are managing well.
Interesting that Mississippi ranks so lowly, despite the lowest cost of living index and also even worse wealth polarisation than California. Louisiana not being much better.
Not that the numbers give a complete picture, but the disparities are interesting.

You sure you did the exchange rate right on that one?

Totally agree. Playing these dumb games like the OP is fucking stupid.

Remember back during a old NBA strike? When Patrick Ewing tried to justify getting massive contracts?

I feel that is like living in New York City or many places in California.

Who gives a fuck if you're making a lot of money if you're having to dump $4K-$5k per month in rent for a basic apartment. And if you're making enough to afford these places, the taxes are fucking outrageous.

And forget buying a house.

I do very well here in Texas. I live in nice house near the Gulf Coast with a pool and my mortgage with Taxes and Insurance is $1,600 per month. Obviously my money is going way further here. I'm a single full time dad of three teen girls (FML) and money is never a concern. I'm not rich by any means... but I feel I'm living better than many of friends back in Denver where real estate went the fucking moon in the late 90's and 2000's. They can't believe my house when they visit. I was told my house would be a million plus in the Denver area right now...

That's fucking insane. I'd have to increase my income by 3x at least.

And we don't have income tax.

What the OP doesn't realise is that these stupid comparisons are all relative.

Like I said, these dumb threads by the War Room Lefties come up once or twice a year as chance to dunk on Red States.

And don't even get me started on the Big Blue Cities in the Red States and how they're the epicenters of poverty and crime.

BTW - I did live in Utah for a severals years for work. Fantastic state... Weird liquor laws and the whole being a member of club to go the bar... lol. But once you got away from Salt Lake and Provo, it's just like everywhere else.
