Why are griddles so popular?

The pic didn t work for me so i went through the thread trying to figure out what it is. Then i googled it and found out it‘s a plancha?? Planchas are pretty widespread I thought, at least i think they are prevalent in meditarenean countries?

Oh, thats what they mean...

When I was younger, I thought it meant to "'sit your tail down because Im about to go medieval on your ass boy"

It was always phrased to me "You better plancha ass right there in that seat and not move a muscle"

I had no idea that it was also a tool used to go upside my head too...

The more you know.

I don't have one, but I'd get one before a gas grill any day.

Because city people are sheep under the correct advertising campaign. The Blackstone advertising made them feel like men, something that probably doesn't happen often. So now it's cool to cook on a griddle.
This is stupid. I purchased one in Apr and it’s been great. You should try one too.

I don't have a Blackstone or griddle appliance.

I have a lone cast iron plate about ~48" x ~36" x ~0.5" that I pulled out of a restaurant that burned down in my town before they bulldozed it. Thing probably weighs 150 lbs. I have it on a metal cart my buddy welded up and I just wheel it over my open fire pit qhen I want to use it.

Sweet mother above, you have realized God status.

My grandfather had a slab of cast iron he put on his grill sometimes. He died and now I've had it. It covers about half the surface. It has no brand or handles and I've no idea where/when he got it. It's at least as old as I am.

It is good for things that don't do well on the grate (which are also cast iron).

I'm not sure what is controversial about griddles in general. They have a purpose. I wouldn't want that as my only grill but I can see how some might.

Sometimes y'all think too much about these things.

My Woodwind Pro is the best of all worlds. There's nothing like a reversed seared ribeye, smoked low and slow over hickory then finished by searing the piss out of it on the flat iron.

You ever tried cooking eggs on a grill?
I also have a separate pan for more delicate fish with holes in so it has the same effect/taste which gets cooked on the grill a lot at my house a lot. But unless it's swordfish I don't put it directly on the grill.

At stores I'm seeing more griddles than grills for sale lately.

Something like this:

I don't get it. You're not getting the nice grill marks nor the char/smoke flavor. Looks to me like your steak will come out the same if you cooked it inside the kitchen in a pan.

I guess I could see the value if you're a caterer or if you throw a shit ton of huge parties.

But as a normal guy, why would I want one of these? I already have a grill and a smoker, so adding another big piece of equipment to my patio better be worth the space it takes up.

What am I missing?
I'm not exactly a grilling expert, but I think it would help keep the food moist because the juices don't drip down. I don't know. I'm probably just writing nonsense sentences to get me horny.

Pellet poopers are great for versatility, ease, and convenience.

But a charcoal or wood fired grill or smoker will spank pellets all day long.

And if you don't have one in your grill box yet - get a smoking tube or tray. It adds another level of versatility in allowing you to do cold smokes. (Namely cheese - my fave) AND you already have the fuel for it on hand!

In fact, anyone with a grill should get a smoking tube. It not only allows you to do cold smokes with it, you can do hot smokes (in conjunction with its native heating source)
Win.

My stove has a little one in the middle, it's great for all kinds of things, eggs, hash browns, bagels and probably others...

I have 5 adults in my house that can EAT. I bought a huge Weber griddle, and can cook 2 lbs of breakfast sausage and 3 lbs of bacon all at once. Once some of the meat comes off, on go the eggs to fry.

I have cooked steaks and burgers on it, too, and they always come out great.

We are on a carnivore diet. Cheat day is keto-friendly vegetables with the meat. I don't have a kitchen cook top and skillets enough to cook 5-6 steaks or 16 burgers. I have all of that space on my griddle.

One of the reasons I chose the Woodwind Pro is that it has a smoke box built in. I hated my Traeger because of the lack of smoke but I find this to be the best compromise of convenience and results. Just my take.

I have both.

I got my charcoal smoker because it also doubles as a grill. I got my Blackstone because I love toys, and its like having a really big pan sort of... You can do all kinds of cool shit on the crackstone that you can't necessarily do on the grill/smoker. Different tools for different cooking fools.

So when are the dinner ready?
I could eat

LOL Depends on what I am cooking.
Speaking of which, I haven't really leaned in and done an intensive ADHD cooking binge lately.

Lord knows I have many of the tools...
Smoker/Grill
Flattop griddle
Air fryer
Sous vide (and the toys that come along side it)
Instant Pot (and I even have a manual PC for other tasks)
Restaurant grade slicer
Stand mixer with a shitload of attachments
And of course cabinets and drawers full of 'specialty utensils'

No wonder the wife gets pissed when I even *think* about a new tool to add to the arsenal.
But boy she loves the foods I come up with!
