Social Why Americans are so Fat

Get in my belly!!!!

Processed foods is the answer it makes up for most of the average American diets then you have pesticides and corn syrup’s in everything.

America consumes the most of this junk .

It's not complicated.

As general society made life easier for everybody, people started being more sedentary and hedonistic. Combine that with a growing capitalist machine willing to oblige these lazy symptoms...
Hedonism is really something that can kill a society or even a generation from the inside, worst outcome...

Well that's bullshit. Some of the greatest bodybuilders in world since the 1960s are from Europe.

Pointing to an individual or a small sample size of anything doesn't disprove a trend at all. As a general trend your average Euro doesn't care about fitness culture and you'll struggle to find gyms with proper equipment while you're there.

Its basically the same in San Diego. As someone who is from the Midwest (Chicago) I see the drastic difference in the average size. And you're right, a lot of it is regional/income dependent.

But non Americans love their blanket statements. Funny how produce some of the Greatest athletes in the world still.
Yup. And not surprisingly, these are higher-income places.

Obesity has become a social class condition. Doesn't matter if it's rural areas or the inner city, it's the poor who are fatter and the well-off and educated that are in shape.

There’s a reason we have the LA 0-dime scale. As a jacked/cut la resident I’m qualified to properly rate imo.

Serious answer, beyond the bad food choices, is that it became very politically incorrect to pressure people (shame people) for being over weight.

For prior generations, and still in most societies it is considered shameful and negligent of parents to allow their kids to be obese. Same for the adult to a lesser degree.

I am not saying that is good but it is effective for the large percent of society. When i was a child there was one singular truly obese kid and i still remember her name, as it really stood it. A few chubby kids. But that was it.

By the time my kids were finishing school it was 50% obese in young school age kids. That is such a burden put on them in their adult lives, with such a hard start.

And yes, in the days where shame was used for those who failed regardless it could be doubly tough on them but i am not sure we are better off removing that shame and having 50+% obesity???

It's not only in America but around the world in pretty much every first world country. There is enormous obese people everywhere. The access to food is just too easy nowadays. We as a society tend to overindulge. You just have to find a happy balance somehow among all this temptation. Or else you'll be swallowed and engulfed by it all.

I don't know what the actual solution is to wide problem is. I just know in the pre 1970s they didn't have close to the obesity that we have now. Maybe there is a way to figure out why those people were relatively average size or smaller back than.

I think it has to abundance of sugar intake and these giant portion size food we eat. But I'm not sure.

Real Sherdogger checking in. Also I live in LA health and beauty are commonplace here. There’s a gym and Pilates studio every 5 feet. TS you said your friend moved to Virginia but if you go to SoCal, Miami, NY you will see scores of people in incredible shape.

Funny thing is americans do seem to be the fatest or more jacked/athletic around. Like its more likely you will either see a guy that looks roided up or 600 pounders scooting in a mall than on any other place.

I haven't been to the states in some time and I forget how bad it is in the states in regards to health and obesity.

One of my good friends who's also lived abroad for years and recently moved back to Virginia has been telling me what it's like and I'm vicariously getting reverse culture shock with the shit she's telling me about how people eat and live.

One of the most shocking things my friend told me was she went out grocery shopping with her friend and friend's cousin, and the cousin who's in her mid 20s, picked up a fruit and said, "What's this?" It was like a pear or something common, not a rare exotic fruit. This grown woman only ever ate candied versions of fruit that she never seen what they actually look like.

It seems Americans have totally different conception of what "healthy" eating is. People eat shit like chicken tenders and fries all the time and think their obesity is genetic. I've met people who think I'm some kind of health freak because I eat vegetables. I even knew a guy in his 30s who had scurvy for Christ's sake.

Americans are the only group of adults I've met who have discussions about which fast food place is better.

There's no two ways about it: Americans are fat as fuck. Obesity rates in other countries are increasing but I haven't seen the giant behemoths in other countries like I have in the states. It's an entirely different class of "fat."

This must have something to do with education (or lack thereof) and laziness, to tie it in with my other thread, but I wonder if mental health plays a part as well. Why else would anyone give up on themselves to the point they can't fit in a car or need a mobility scooter? Why are we turning into depressed, low IQ, fat lazy fucks?

Other factors like lack of public transportation and over reliance on cars. Nobody walks or bikes anywhere because of the lack of infrastructure.
There really isn't a wider culture of walking or hiking or generally being active. It seemed to me that people in general were outside more in other countries, even in countries that get cold.

There also seems to be a weird extreme where people are either obsessed with fitness and looking jacked (which isn't necessarily healthy either), or they're just fat slobs.

Maybe it's because it's so much easier in the US to order something cheap and shitty than to go out to a restaurant where it'd be more expensive and you'd have to tip on top of it. Definitely easier than buying groceries and cooking yourself.

I know sherdoggers aren't the best sample size since we're all jacked 6'6 +220 lbs of muscle, but I can't be the only one who's disturbed by this?
This has become a comical projection from non-American westerners onto Americans to feel better about their own expanding waistlines. Notice to Europeans: be quiet, look in the mirror, you're fat as fuck, too. Just because you're a little less fat doesn't mean you're in a position to cluck your tongues. Some highlights:

Prevalence of obesity in the Adult Population, 2022
  • Argentina = 26.3%
  • Australia = 30.2%
  • Brazil = 28.1%
  • Canada = 26.2%
  • Croatia = 30.6%
  • Czechia = 26.0%
  • Germany = 20.4%
  • Greece = 28.0%
  • Hungary = 31.7%
  • Iceland = 21.2%
  • Ireland = 28.3%
  • Mexico = 36.0%
  • Netherlands = 14.5%
  • New Zealand = 33.6%
  • Norway = 19.1%
  • Peru = 27.3%
  • Poland = 27.5%
  • Qatar = 43.2%
  • Sweden = 15.3%
  • Russia = 24.2%
  • Saudi Arabia = 40.6%
  • Ukraine = 23.6%
  • United Arab Emirates = 32.1%
  • UK = 26.8%
  • USA = 42.0%

Now here's what those numbers should look like:
  • Japan = 5.5%

For perspective, when I was a kid, when Europeans first began relentlessly mocking us for being a bunch of fat fucks, in the early 90's, the prevalence of American obesity (in 1991) was 12.0%.

we're built for starvation times, not for the land of milk and cookies. that's why Polynesians are the fattest people in the world. we literally have genes that make us store more body fat. i'm sure that goes for the majority of the planet. there's a reason why super ripped people are rare, because their genes are complete shit for the majority of human history, it's not as efficient at storing energy for later use as the big fatsos. nature proliferates the best genes, it's just that our bodies can't evolve fast enough for how drastically the times have changed.

I'll make a blanket statement, non-Americans love to tell Americans about America.

That said, most first world countries could use some self-control in the eating department.
