Who's the smartest MMA fighter

He was a teacher....like someone who is incharge of teaching others....i think he would be quite smart...u cant teach others something you dont know yourself....

Also chuck has a degree in accounting....literally could of been in the office of UFC instead of fighting for them ...dudes smart just likes to fight

How old are you? Because half of the people I knew who are dumb af grew up to be teachers.

Wasn't also Einstein?

There's a huge difference between thinking that some form of higher power could have played a role in the birth of the universe, and creationism. Creationism is about firmly believing that the world was created exactly as stated in your holy book, which is absolutely a stupid idea worthy of disdain.

Business acumen + fight IQ + general philosophy on life = it's gotta be Conor McGregor. He clearly has a blend of all the types of intelligences.

He's retired but Shane Carwin is a mechanical engineer major and an engineer in real life.

Rich Franklin went from hs math teacher to fighter to running a fight promotion.

Miles Jury took his UFC money and invested it in real estate and became a millionaire off it.

Carwin, GSP, Sonnen, Mighty Mouse, Cruz, Bullet, Nunes, DC, on top of my head

30... I guess it depends where u live...

Here in my part of Canada it takes a significant amount of commitment and knowledge to be a teacher...but we have bad teachers too...like any job good and bad employees

Yeah bro America is different lol

GSP and Kabib.
Got out relatively young, legacy intact, and will still be able to talk coherently as they age.

Wow, that's really interesting. I never knew that about Jury.

There's so many different types of intelligence. In terms of fighting, and it's hard to go off much else in this case given what limited access we have to fighters' lives, I support the GSP nomination. He not only handled his career thoughtfully, but his fight IQ was just so high. His in-ring decision making, his ability to learn and implement all facets of the martial arts in an effective way, his choice of coaches, the self reflection on his own game, his PR, his approach to training and incorporation of different disciplines like gymnastics...all of this was done with intelligence.

Now, you can go off academic credentials if you like. But not many notable fighters will have spent a lot of time navigating academia. They spent that time training of course. Perhaps more than being "smart," there are fighters who seem wise. To me, a wise fighter would be one who maximized his career, minimized the many detriments of the sport, and fostered a happy life beyond the cage. Conor does seem savvy, but I can't help but think he has allowed for too much tumult in his personal life to properly enjoy an eventual retirement. For me, Demian Maia seems like a wise man who is content with his life.

I was looking at the Bryce Mitchell thread and seeing his list of reading books, a whole bunch of conspiracy theory books.

Now I realize these guys are fighters and their intelligence isn't what makes them money, but is there a highly intelligent fighter amongst the UFC roster? Is there someone a cut above the rest in terms of mental capability?

I would put Overeem out there as he is incredibly well-spoken and thought out in his interviews. I would also throw Izzy in there with how quick witted he is. Like him or hate him, he is incredibly sharp.
Dominic Cruz HAS to be right up there.

LMAO at Conor. Well.... there are many types of intelligence. Intellectually Id say Rich Franklin and Joe Lauzon. They seem to have a high level of emotional intelligence as well... Imagine Conor, Tony or Nick as ceos and some executive getting on their nerves lmao....they would swing.

Teaching and accounting are not exactly intellectual careers. Plenty of dumb teachers, and accounting is just crunching numbers.

Rich taught HS Math though (not easy subject) and Bachelors degree level Accounting is far from just crunching numbers (mostly the application of complex rules and standards).

On 2nd thought maybe you're right about Franklin because I know 2 stupid HS math teachers now that I'm thinking about it lol.

I don't doubt that Rich Franklin is a reasonably intelligent guy, and Liddell is certainly smarter than he looks(or at least he was before all the drugs and brain damage). I'm just saying that neither of them is a true intellectual. A Masters Degree or PhD is light years past a Bachelors.

I don't know. Just because he was a teacher doesn't automatically mean he is smart. I would still put Overeem and Izzy as being smarter than Rich. Also, negative on the Chuck.

Those two? Interesting. On what grounds?

It’s weird how many people would rather take a WAG (Wild Ass Guess) than actually look it up and maybe - must maybe - learn something new.

What has Rosi Sexton not accomplished? On top of owning black belts in taekwondo and jiu-jitsu, Sexton has run up a 13-3 record.

I'm sure you guessed that there was more. First, she has a mathematics degree from Cambridge. Then, she got a doctorate in theoretical computer science from Manchester University. I don't even know what theoretical computer scientists do.

But she didn't stop there; apparently she has a thing for credentials, and for doing lots and lots of stuff. She also is trained in and now practices as an osteopath, which in Europe is basically a cross between a doctor and a chiropractor.

So that's it. There's your champion and easily the brainiest fighter today in MMA.
Fuckin' A.
