When it comes not only in the ring, but outside the ring as well.

My five:

1. Muhammad Ali
2. Joe Louis
3. Manny Pacquiao
4. George Foreman
5. Rocky Marciano

Depends on who you ask really, there is a schism these days with boxing becoming so global.
mine?
If you're asking who I'm a fan of?
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Hector Camacho
3. Sugar Ray Robinson
4. Marvelous Marvin
5. Roy Jones Jr.
If you're asking out cultural boxing icons in history?
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Joe Louis
3. Jack Dempsey
4. Sugar Ray Robinson
5. Rocky Marciano

If you're asking the boxing journalists, probably:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson
2. Joe Louis
3. Muhammad Ali
4. Roberto Duran
5. I dunno, Sugar Ray Leonard, the press loved that guy. Foreman too.

Funny thing is, there have been some limited fighters who were at some point, very beloved. Floyd Patterson was huge in his time, much more than any of us know today. I still remember reading how Howard cosell raving about how popular Floyd was and by the time I knew about him, he was seen as a joke by the journalists and he wasn't an icon in my part of the country. Part of that goes with how the times have changed, Floyd was always the "good negro" in the old parlance and it worked for him in his era but as Ali and other militant athletes changed things, he became a relic.

Ali is the only boxer I can say for certain is universally respected, so much that he’s universally considered to be the GOAT despite a handful of fighters being better boxers. Also, PACs reputation took a huge hit when he got into politics. This is why you should just stay out of politics, PAC.

Thanks for break down my friend.

did it really? We didn't care much about Pac/politics over here. Manny's loved over here but he'd been even more loved probably had he been able to win a couple more fights, especially Mayweather, who has been the most hated guy in boxing for years by the time they fought.

Pac has done many good deeds outside of the ring philanthropically but some of his views range from being abrasive to outright disturbing. However, it is fair to say that—outside of the LGBT community—he's respected across the globe as both a legendary fighter and as a person.

He lost a lot of fans over his stance on homosexuality. And apparently he got wiped in his most recent election? I don’t really follow other countries politics, but I read that on twitter.

oh ya, i recall hearing something about that but I don't know how much people were actually offended. Didn't bother me, or probably most of the fans here. Of course with his fame, non-boxing fans would hear and react. did it do long term damage here? I don't know, the phillipines? I know nothing about the social climate there either. I know they are mainly catholic and are particularly a matriachial culture which seems to not discourage homosexuality even though the main religion would.

did he really? In the phillipines? They are that pro gay over there huh? I just know a lot of philipino men seem very comforatable being gay, like I said, very matriachal culture. I never get along with filipinas because of the head games and I've known enough. My tribe is kinda the same (being indian) but there is a difference between looking up and revering women and getting mindfucked by women, that's been lost in recent times with colonization.

Pac publicly stated that homosexuals, particularly those that entered into same-sex marriage, are worse than animals. He strongly opposes it because he's christian he says. Well, that isn't saying much because according to the bible homosexual behavior is punishable by death. Only civilized adults don't go around killing gay and/or bisexual people just because their sexual orientation is different nor do we view them as subhuman like he does. He was making millions per year with Nike as one of his sponsors at the time. Once the LGBT backlash hit they dropped him (again).

Pac also supported Duterte in his war on drugs in the Philippines which involved a death squad that killed a lot of people, many extrajudicially.

I guess, it's nothing i hadn't heard before growing up in church. Dumb of him to say it publicly but pac was never too bright.

He used to be a strong supporter of Duterte who was his country's president at the time. The latter has been at Pac's fights before ringside/backstage. Duterte has been accused of so many HR violations it's ridiculous (like masses of drug users being unlawfully killed). When Pac last ran for president he distanced himself from the guy and said that if elected his war on drugs would allow for a fair trial and rehabilitation. That's convenient but progress nevertheless. Pac once admitted to using crystal meth in his youth which only made his close relationship with Duterte even more bizarre.

Respect is such a strong word, ya know? Personally, I don't respect Pac because of all his excuse making. He was a sore loser. Dude never took an L on the chin. Oh I had cramps, oh I had a sore foot, oh I had a torn shoulder. It was always something with him. He has never once given props to the fighters that have beaten him.

Well, I don't know of anyone that doesn't respect Pac as a fighter but as a person things get more complicated. Yeah, he always had an excuse for every loss he ever took. He was exciting to watch and special but I was never a big fan. There were glaring holes in his game. I'm surprised he didn't get brutally KO'd more often but I chalk a lot of that up to his durability and athleticism.

It's a third world country, anything happening there shouldn't be too surprising. Would Pac be a good leader? I don't know, power corrupts. I do remember we had a Filipino poster who said something like Pac was already a dictator in waiting back even before he beat oscar, just based on the crowd reaction to him. I think this same poster said he had a big head and looked weird in person and that he was looking out the window when pac passed by and he looked at him and waved. But, Pac is a nice guy and third world heroes like him really don't belong in politics and if they did get any sort of power, it's hard to say how they'd do things. Duran, Chavez and Pac all had that in common, just basically worshipped in their home countries and the other two also had ferocious backlash's in their countries at different points. I don't think any backlash Pac dealt with were anything like Duran being thrown in the can after losing to Hearns or Chavez being booed after coming back after a controversial victory over, I think it was Frankie Randall.

I always thought Ali would have made a great politician in the right circumstances, he'd have had to pick up and cram a lot of info but the charisma and intellect and the love were there from the start. I think he did entertain the idea up until he felt like he was being played by Carter on some of his African missions.

I don't know how Pac would've ran the country if he was elected president but he was aligned with one when Duterte was around and the latter was a dictator and a tyrant. Pac has since accused him of corruption when a ton of money went missing. Ali as a politician? I don't think he was dishonest enough. You need to be able to lie through your teeth and con the public while assuring them that you're actually doing a great job at whatever you've been tasked to do.

Look at his name and then the moronic statement of "Yea I dont respect him because he makes excuses."

He doesnt watch boxing. Hes a Floyd fan.
I know, but Pac did make lots of excuses, even for a fighter, most fighters are full of excuses always have been.

Ali was honest to a fault. He may have made a better preacher or even his own brand of civic leader even though he loved the ladies too much. Ali used to say boxing was just a prep for what he was going to do next, that was before the damage made that all impossible. He was also very gullible, what else would you say about a guy who would demand his assistant give 10k to a bum off the streets or chew out his bloodsucking entourage out and then feel bad about it? That was willful stupidity because Ali wasn't a dumb man but he was still a mark for a lot of bad people.

Pac as president? I don't know, the religious fanaticism really might have made that difficult. We know he loves the poor though and that might make up for some mistakes, but again, power corrupts. Lots of seemingly decent people got ahold of some power and it warped them beyond recognition.
