As of now, Dern appears to have a better fighter's instinct.

It took her 14 mintues to realise she really needed to take the other girl down where she had a massive advantage!

Ronda, for all her faults, knew what she had to do and tried to do it whenever she could.

Rhonda by far, but then she's spent far longer training & actually fighting MMA so that should be the case.

However despite a clear lack of actual skill the thing that impressed me about Dern was her aggression & willingness to engage. If she decides to spend serious time focusing on her striking & takedowns she could become a genuine threat, but if she doesn't she's getting seriously hurt the first time she steps up in class even in what is a shallow division.

I think you are over rating women. Teh Betche fought for a title with two years of aerobic exercise classes, got the better of world champ boxer Holly on the feet and has been perennially ranked top ten. Even Cyborg, who is supposed to be the GOAT struggled mightily with Holly, who hides life and death with soccer moms and gets rapped by Cupcake. The skill level is just so deplorably low that nearly any girl can succeed. Just wrap it up, put it on a one way flight and ship it to Invicta.

I would say there are quite a few with poor striking that are even on the main card of UFC events. Paige Van Zant is someone that immediately comes to mind who was recently on a main card. Sarah McMann headlined the prelims not long ago. Bethe fucking Correia was part of a main event just last year. I don't think anybody in their right mind would claim that any of these three fighters have good stand up.
Don't get me wrong, Dern's striking was below average and I don't see her getting very high (if at all) in the rankings but the point i've been trying to make is it isn't any worse than the majority of WMMA fights we see these days especially someone who is so green in the fight game.

Yeah, agree to disagree. For the record, I was not claiming that Derns striking is on Paige, Mcmanns, or Correia’s level I was just using them as examples to point out other fighters that are pushed on the main cards while not having good striking.
I know this is a different discussion entirely but I also feel the need to say that I think Correia got that unwarranted title shot more for the fact that she was willing to call out and trash talk Rousey simultaneously while the UFC were trying to make Ronda in to a superstar. Just read an article that she didn’t even face a top 10 opponent leading up to her TS, and her 3 previous opponents had a combined record of 1-7.

Ronda was the better fighter and athlete. Ronda actually knew how to get the fight to the ground and finish, even early in her career. Let us see if Dern will develop those skills.

Actually, I would argue that the level of WMMA striking was nowhere near what it is now. All the top women had wrestling bases and willingly walked into Ronda's throws. The only exception was Bethe who's just a sloppy brawler.

So Ronda's advantage of grappling and submissions were augmented at a time when her opponents had no other options but to jump into the fray.
