aren't we to the point now where teh UFC is bigger than soccer, as he once said would be true, and since there are something like 2 billion soccer fans world wide, he easily takes it.
 
Obama. Most of China and India would know who he is just because everyone does (America's president) and they make up the majority of the world. Ronaldo? As if the Chinese or Indians know him.

Thats thing Ronaldo is number one on Google Trends last year...but for some reason most dont want to consider him the most famous..
Im guessing because they are from Europe or USA... Im from the United States and never had heard of Ronaldo till a few years ago.
But i still recognize his stardom

Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna are definitely world famous.

Michael was one of few athletes to make a 1 billion net worth and it would have been more if not for his accident.

I'd say Ronaldo, Messi, Obama or the Pope. Over three BILLION people watched the 2014 World Cup, and Ronaldo is the most recognizable face in soccer right now. I would guess its him. If 3.2 billion people watched the WC, that means 3.2 billion people decided to watch soccer and the biggest star would no doubt be noticed by those people. One billion people watched the WC final alone, so they were exposed to Lio Messi.

So I'll say Ronaldo, with Messi and Obama being slightly behind. If you showed people pictures of those people NOT in official garb like the Popes hat or the Queens jewels, I guarantee more people recognize CR7 or Messi's face.

No he wasn't (anywhere as big as he is now), Im a Man united Fan and have been since 1989,

and I saw his popularity rise tenfold after the Madrid move

Yeah he became the most recognizable person on Earth at Madrid, but he was already famous from his time at Manchester, when Man U was actually relevant (no offense, but they haven't been a real factor in years now). He was at Man U from what, ~2003-2009? before the social media explosion so his popularity no doubt grew exponentially during his RM run, but every famous person is more famous now bc of the internet and social media.

USA is like 4% of the world's population. You can still have worldwide appeal without being popular in the US of America.

Either way, Micheal Jordan > Some modern soccer guy. Literally everyone on Earth knows who Micheal Jordan is. Even infants.

Mike Tyson is probably up there too.

For Soccer, I'd go with Pele. Even if you don't know what he looks like, you automatically know the name and what he was. Ronaldo's celebrity doesn't touch that shit.
