He was obviously super dominant, but I think Khabib only has like 5 ranked wins. His overall resume is pretty thin, and literally every other divisional GOAT has at least double (or more) the number of ranked wins that Khabib does. I actually rank every single fighter mentioned in this poll above Khabib.
Sure, it’s my opinion. I feel strongly about it, but this topic re-circulates over and over again, so I'm very well aware of most the talking points and opinions contrary here. I recognize all these aforementioned fighters as great fighters, and great champions so please understand I’m not saying any of them weren't or aren't, when I say what I’m about to say.
Gsp’s competition was of its time. I don’t see it as being anywhere near the level of fighter we are seeing right now at welterweight. As far as lesser blemishes go, he’s definitely the man. Aside from hard times with Bj Penn briefly, the Serra shocker, and the beating Hendricks put on him that scared him shitless, GSP was extremely dominant and probably twice cleared his weightless. The Bisping win is cool and all. It was an interesting fight, but we all know he didn't come back to fight the best Middleweights in the world. It is what it was: a good win, an exclamation point on an already great career. Cool. But I can't see GSP being able to dominate like that in the talent pool of Welterweight present. Those were much more shallow times as far as depth goes.
Fedor still has a very relevant case in his early work, as the Heavyweight landscape hasn't much grown since then. It's his post-Pride career that hurts his legacy for me. Not saying I think less of those great performances in hindsight. It's just incredibly weird how one-dimensionally he went on to perform over in Bellator. He suddenly became this under-sized, chinny, brawling headhunter looking for one-punch KOs. And we all know how poorly that worked out for him. So, that for me really just wasn't worth it for the big picture. I don't think less of him personally for it. He wanted the money or he wanted to just go brawl like a maniac. Who knows? But that was not GOAT shit is all I can say. I love Fedor. If he had retired after killing all the ex-UFC heavyweight champs in Strikeforce, he might be the man on top still, but he didn't.
And then Jones. Jones is just so incredibly talented and so troubled with every kind of problem otherwise. The drug cheat tests, the sloppy shitshow fights with light heavyweights who, on paper, really didn't even belong in the cage with him. So Jones is probably as great as Khabib ever was, if not better on his best day, but there's just so much bullshit clouding his claim that with a more consistent body of work and no real flaws, Khabib being as talented perhaps is the more outstanding option for me.
I don't care that much that he only cleaned out the division the once and then shut it down. They weren't competitive fights. And he was so damn good he even was able to build a protege who could step in and hold it down while he chilled at home. I don't think Khabib fought a weak schedule and his performance against the best that he faced showed that he was just really on a different planet from the lightweight division. There was no challenge left for him there. Those rematches weren't going to be interesting. He did the right thing. He always did the right thing, and lightweight had long been considered to be the most contentious division in the sport, just teeming with killers. I don't think it is anymore, but probably cause Khabib crushed it just that damn hard. He's still the lightweight king and he doesn't even have to fight.
