Who is considered the godfather of Judo in MMA?

Well, Fedor should likely be near the top. Karo and Rhonda come to mind. Lombard might be the proper name though. He wasnt much in the ufc, but he was already long out of prime. Way back though, when he slaughtered people, he was one of the guys you might buy the ppv for.

fedor's judo credential i think is better than lombard. i think top 3 in russia behind olympic and world champs is better than lombard's cuban olympic status at his weight class.

also it can't really be him, not only he lacks in accomplishments but given how later his career was relative to others.

i will say this though, he looked so, so good during the run he had.

then he got okamied.

Yoshida and Karo are the first two that come to mind. I'm a bigger fan of Karo though.
i'm a bigger fan of yoshida myself yey lol

yoshida had prettier Judo and more skilled, but Karo's Sherbro fav for sure

I remember Karo, Yozhida and Kazuhiro Nakamura, being the first guys who used judo as to make an impression on me
yeah i think really earlier guys who's getting love in this thread, they just couldn't shine bright enough to leave a lasting impression on people.

nakamura should have never taken off that jacket against Wanderlei lol

but you can't be godfather of something when you don't rep it.

you can't be the god father of your family, if you don't rep it for example.
Repeating your ideas doesn't make then sensible.

Still true though before repeating.
No, it's not true, it's your opinion

"Let's pretend his decades of Judo or his influence never happened because he says he reps Sambo now"

lol ffs

Back before the UFC, I can't say. But the earliest UFC fighter who put judo on the map for me was Karo. Even afterwards I don't recall hearing much about judo in MMA until Ronda.

Karo was a beast, he was the first guy that came to mind for me in UFC, he had a great diverse judo offence.

It's a shame his career got derailed by his back and leg injury that led to a painkiller addiction.

There's other guys like Yoshida and Ishi who are better credentialed but id say Karo was more effective in those early days of the sport.

Look at his wins - Nick Diaz, Nick Thomson, Antonio McKee, Matt Serra, Drew Fickett, Josh Burkman, Stun Gun and Chris Lytle.

Guys speak very highly of his judo even today.

Nailed it. Came to say Karo used it about as well as anyone, even if he's not as credentialed. He had some beautiful hips....pause.

Many Japanese dudes had the medals but looked like nerds when they fought MMA.
