Who is considered the godfather of Judo in MMA?

Karo or Teh Sex

Back before the UFC, I can't say. But the earliest UFC fighter who put judo on the map for me was Karo. Even afterwards I don't recall hearing much about judo in MMA until Ronda.

Nailed it. Came to say Karo used it about as well as anyone, even if he's not as credentialed. He had some beautiful hips....pause.

Many Japanese dudes had the medals but looked like nerds when they fought MMA.
Karo is a popular pick for UFC for sure, but there were a couple guys in early, early ufc with judo backgrounds too.

Personally, I think Yoshida had much more beautiful, elegant throws and was just as good as Karo if not better as a fighter and competition they faced was probably around the same level though Karo fought more.

I think it's a hard topic to get a clear answer in a way

i'm a bigger fan of yoshida myself yey lol

yoshida had prettier Judo and more skilled, but Karo's Sherbro fav for sure
Also Karo showed you could land throws consistently. Like in every match. Not alot of guys doing that other than Ronda.

Yoshida alot of time just used the gi to stick to you, trip and get a sub

The Dagestanis are the ones doin alot of throws now

Yoshida would also throw anyone that Karo threw and he had much better throws.

People he couldn't throw, Karo wouldn't even come close to throwing like prime Crocop, Josh and Gardner, especially given Yoshida is fighting up a weight class or two, if Karo was Yoshida's size.

he's def getting some good amount of love in this thread. personally i think it's going a little too far back but i can see the argument for him too
Guys who are being named who easily say Gene. These n00bs just have no idea who the pioneers of the sport are.

i doubt all the olympians who competed in mma would say an american to be a godfather of judo by any stretch of imagination.

Joe Charles. He wasn't great but may have been the first Judo fighter. He fought at UFC 4 and 5.

remco fought in ufc 2, actually and Leininger in ufc 3 as well.

but it's a great shoutout, no one else did so far!

it's just a matter of success and how important it is for someone to be considered so with these guys

mad respect though and a great shoutout, these guys deserve a lot more respect than they get around here for sure

You need to relax bro

The sport has existed in Japan and Brazil since the 80s...there has been use of judo way before most of the peoples mentionings here.
