He's as good a pick for number 1 as anyone else, but if someone had GSP, Anderson, Jones, DJ Aldo as their top 5, I wouldn't be too incredulous about it or anything.

Those 6 in any order more or less feels correct
Fair take. Personally I have Silva GSP Fedor and Jones as a tier above and MM and Aldo right under that but I agree, the gap isn’t big enough that I would be incredulous with that list. On the other hand if someone has Conor or Khabib above any of those guys…they’ve got some explaining to do lol

They're just subjective discussions. A word and concept that most mma fans don't deliberately engage with imo
Fair enough, it seems logical to me if we are to have such discussions to view them as Era GOATs, so like pre-Zuffa, PRIDE Era, etc. due to the evolution of the sport.

i think there should only be 1 GOAT

theres no such thing as 10 GOATS

the one who accomplished more and has lost less should be the GOAT

Failed drug tests or not, I still give Jones GOAT status simply based on the fact he's never lost an actual fight, never been KO'd or knocked down really bad, and if a casual looked at his UFC career, would probably recognize almost all the names on the list. Most of those names held a title or fought for one pre or post Jones fight too, which is very rare. Shogun, Rampage, Machida, Rashad, Vitor, Sonnen, Gustafsson, Cormier, Teixeira, Gane, and Stipe. He's checked every possibly box for GOAT (excluding the drug stuff).

GSP has lost 2 fights. Anderson lost a bunch of fights plus a failed drug test. and Demetrious can't have a case due to how weak Flyweight was when he was fighting.

Fedor probably has a case over DJ, but fits somewhere around GSP and Anderson, while Jones still over all of them.

Yeah but then they wouldn't be goats. Goats are the greatest of all time.

I suppose it could work if you spell it differently:
GOTE (Greatest Of That Era)

Fedorism is ridiculous and is so outdated. Honestly it’s quite easy to make an argument that even Topuria has already surpassed him in GOAT rankings.

1. Anderson
2. Fedor.
3. GSP
4. Aspinall
5. Cormier (remember when we called him Black Fedor?)

Very true. I just do not think it is comparable or fair to pit someone like Ken Shamrock of 1995 to todays HW (heck you cannot even really compare 95 Shamrock to 2005 Shamrock). If you gave pre-WWE Shamrock modern training he could very easily be in these talks. A better example might be Frank, who might be in these talks if he did not take a long time off, fighting only once in the middle of his prime years (28-36).

Maybe a better way of doing GOAT is to compare fights within their peak five years or so.

Idk, I just think my training as a historian makes me not want to judge the past by present-day standards. A major no-no in the field, so much so, they even have a name for it, presentism.

The most fair way to compare IMO is who was more dominant against their own competition of that time.

Like prime Royce Gracie would lose to prime Clay Guida, but when you're judging who was greater, it's unquestionably Royce because he was more dominant against his own era.

who here doesn't care about how careers ended? it's unreasonable to believe that anyone is going to stay #1 forever.

what matters it the accomplishments they actually made at that time, that can never be taken away.

Fedor, BJ, Chuck, Anderson = idgaf how their careers ended. they already achieved greatness.
Agreed Penn doesn't get the credit he deserved at all dude faught lyoto at lhw..

And Anderson Silva gets shit on..to much gsp glazing.. Fedor has a hw record that may never be beaten .

I DON'T. He could only be ranked in the Heavy weights. And I have watched him from the beginning frustrated when no one could figure out his charging Windmill style. Once his style was figured out he just became a foot note in the history books.
