Who are the 5 best american grapplers in MMA history?

LoL

Now they all are “American”

First couple posts just about sum them up

Just by their performance/grapple application in the octagon

IMO:

1 - Jones
2 - DC
3 - Demetrious
4 - Shields
5 - BJ Penn

I think Weidman, Mir, Cain, Sterling and Cejudo are pretty close

I think you nailed it. Maybe replace DJ with Mir

Shields over Matt Hughes? I can't buy that. Was Jake the better pure grappler? Yeah. Did he use his grappling to accomplish what Hughes did in the UFC? No.

Anderson was a black belt. & to be fair, Hendo was trying to get the KO over Anderson. Hendo is a very good grappler, especially in his prime, he just didn't use any in the fight with Anderson. He thought eventually he'd catch Anderson with dynamite.
Am I remembering wrong? Didn’t Hendo control him on the ground in the 1st round?

Grappling has to include BJJ. Can't just be a wrestler. With that being said nobody is going to say Mir? That's crazy.

Such a subjective question

Any Olympic wrestling medalist you’d think would be on the list … even if it didn’t translate to mma

No real answer

Even guys like Matt Lindland or Henry Cejudo on paper should be near the top … yet they got out wrestled multiple times

Frank is a pretty flawed grappler. He can snatch a submission on someone, but there's more to it than that.

Josh Barnett is a better grappler than Frank Mir alone.

Lol. Holy shit.

Mir should be up there for HWs but he had issues getting the fight to the ground. He was either going to snatch a sub or get beat up on the way to the ground. We all seen the wobbly Mir look when he gets hit.

Shields is pretty good too but same issue. I will admit I hated to watch Shields fight. He is not athletic and it becomes a slow mo striking stinker if he can't get his grappling going. It's the same with Maia. Maia's fights are awful to watch if he can't take someone down.

I mean...what? Frank isn't good fighting off his back and he's not good against the cage and he's not good at taking people down.

That's not Frank Mir's game. Guys like Josh Barnett, Frank Shamrock, and Randy Courture are way more well rounded. How is that controversial?

Like how are you going to say Frank is one of the best American grapplers when Brock Lesnar, who is strictly an American grappler, beat his ass badly on the ground?
