While Anderson "Fat Stacks" Silva enjoys the offseason and chows down on some Double Whoppers so he can balloon up his 268 lbs walk-around weight, the UFC has some tough choices to make as to who should be his next opponent.

I think we all agree that The Boss' next foe will likely come from the 185 talent pool, as GSP needs extra time to add lean muscle and to mentally prepare him self for a more challenging division, and Jones still needs more seasoning, considering that Anderson finished both Bonnar and Belfort in stylish first round finishes, whereas Jones needed 7 rounds to get the job done.

So which 185er ACTUALLY deserves the next shot?

The Candidates

Tim Boetsch

A couple years ago, if you beat Yushin Okami and Hector Lombard in back to back fights, people would have been going crazy to proclaim that guy as "The Guy" to beat Anderson Silva, add to that he's on a 4 fight winning streak and is 8-1 in his last 9. In 2012 however, The Barbarian's resume still isn't impressing too many people, and his next fight against Consantiniananceoplis Philllloppopolis is a lose-lose proposition. If he loses, he lost. If he wins, he beat some late replacement that nobody cares about.

Seems like Boetsch is at least two more fights away.

Alan Belcher

Finished his last four opponents, all impressively. Submitted Denis Kang, KO'd Jorge Santiago, could easily be on a 7 fight win streak with some luck in the Sexyama fight. Out of all the challengers, nobody has looked more impressive as of late, culminating in the BJJ chess match versus Paul Harris. If he beats Okami in a rematch, it's pretty hard to say he's not deserving.

Michael Bisping

Lot's of people like to dis-COUNT Bisping, but I'm not one of them. 23-4, could easily be 26-1 with a little luck. Only 1 no doubt about it loss in his career, and that was to one of the all-time greats in Dan "Hollywood" Henderson. And even then, Bisping lasted longer than Fedor against Hendo. The one thing about Bisping though, is that he doesn't have that signature win. Victories over Stann, Mayhem, Kang, Leben and Sexyama are nice, but they're not wins over elite comp like Evans, Sonnen, or Hendo.

Cung Le

Two finishes versus two former UFC champs. And um...he rocked Wandy a little in that fight, and...he probably could have gotten a stoppage in the first Smith fight with a more incompetent ref, so, you know he COULD be 11-0...although I suppose he wouldn't have fought Smith a second time if he won the first, so he COULD be 10-0. And he's flashy. Highschool wrestler...

Luke Rockhold

Current/Last Strikeforce champ. 9 fight win streak with wins over Tim Kennedy, Jacare, The Dean of Mean, and JT Money. He's a ginormous middleweight, and has a strong grappling background. Plus he looks like a younger version of the dad on the Wonder Years.

Chris Weedman

He's got the hype. He's got the looks. He's got the pedigree. Too bad he doesn't have the resume. His best win is a guy who got knocked out by MATT HAMMIL with a HEAD KICK. Not punches, not ground and pound...Matt Hammil knocked out Mark Munoz with a head kick. The same Mark Munoz who had a thrilling come from behind victory versus Kendal Grove. Yes, Munoz nearly got finished in the first round by Kendal "Da' Sppyyda'" Grove. Weedman's next best win, was a horrible kick-boxing match against a welterweight BJJ expert who took the fight on short notice. Weedman's third best win is...I dunno, Tom Lawler? Maybe Alessio Sakara? Weedman will get a title shot, but he probably should face a striker like Belfort, Bisping, or Belcher, hell, I'd even like to see him fight a guy like Robbie Lawler before taking on the greatest MMA fighter ever about two years too soon.

Boetch or Weidman, which is why that fight was perfect :(

Someone who lost his last fight an got suspended. Winning fights no longer pays off

Who cares?

Anderson should pretend to dislike Brian Stann and fight him instead. Screw the people who actually deserve it.

Weidman, then finally Bisping.

Dana needs Bisping to gain fans in GB.

So Weidman doesn't deserve it because his best win is over a guy who almost lost to kendall grove, and yet, Belcher does even though he actually lost to kendall grove...:icon_neut

Should be Belcher if he wins but unfortunately, he's fighting Okami coming off loses instead of a top 10 guy on a win streak. So we'll just find out once most the top MWs fight.

If Bisping can get past Belfort, I would prefer to give him the shot. He has been around for a while and I would love for Silva to shut him up... even though I don't care for either Bisping or Silva. And Belfort is a solid name. Boetsch didn't look impressive in his win over Lombard and was battered by Okami until his amazing comeback in the 3rd. He would have to look untouchable against Phillipou to change my mind. Belcher lacks a signature win... though he might get it with a win over Okami. But then again Okami's name has lost some luster. Weidman would have received my vote if he beat Boetsch, but now he is on the shelf. I'm not even gonna consider Le. Rockhold needs at least one quality UFC win for Dana to consider him. Probably more than that.

I don't like what you did with Bisping here. You argue that he lost close decisions to Sonnen, Evans, and Wand, so he could easily be 26-1. There are 2 major problems with that line of reasoning.

#1 You ignore the close decisions that DID go his way. Hammill definitely could have gone the other way, and other posters might think of other close decisions that Bisping won. People do this with Frankie Edgar all the time. They mention all the close decisions that went the other way as if they should be considered victories, but fail to consider the flip side of that.

Also, if a decision loss doesn't count as much, does a decision win also not count as much?

#2 You further make the case why nobody wants to see Bisping get the title shot. Even if we can assume that he won all those fights, they were still very close, which leaves a big question. If Bisping can't decisively beat contenders, what does he have to offer the champ?

People were eager to see Jones vs. Rua because Jones was steamrolling contenders. Sonnen steamrolled contenders to get to Anderson. Same with JDS vs. Cain, or GSP vs. Condit. Squeaking by top contenders, or barely losing to them, doesn't get fans or management hyped about seeing you fight for the belt.

Belcher 9/10?

I'm out of here.

Why? We know he has the striking, and we saw against Paul Harris and Dennis Kang how versatile his BJJ is.

If Belcher beats Okami, who's resume, skill set, and winning streak will be more impressive at the moment?

Good thread. Good breakdown of what's happening @MW right now.

I have to agree that Belcher has not only put in the work but has looked good doing it. He's a dark horse sort of character at this point, I'd like to see him get a shot.

Rockhold would be interesting in that he has his own belt that he took from Anderson's buddy Jacare. Wouldn't mind seeing Anderson welcoming him to the UFC.

And I agree that Weidman should do himself a favor and fight someone that's actually going to hit him before he steps into the octagon against the greatest, most precise striker in the world, possibly universe.

2013 looks to be a good year for the MW division I think.

Well, in the last 6 years, Belcher has shored up his BJJ defense. And even if you don't agree that Belcher should get it, Boetsch, Bisping, and Rockhold all have better cases IMO.

And I don't dislike Weedman, or deny that he may have the best chance of beating Silva. He just doesn't have the record yet. Maybe if this was 2009, but the 185 division is strong now, and guys should get rewarded for putting in the work and not just being the flavor of the month.
