Movies Which Movies do you think are massively overrated?

Ill throw one out. Movies like con air, the rock, bad boys, john wick, mission impossible 3, etc. are all crap.

They don't win oscars, but I was trying to watch mi3 and the opening scene was just too much action. Very unrealistic and over the top.

Movies that stay realistic without the over the top action scenes are way better.

This may be already common knowledge, bit the action films are usually blockbusters. For that reason, very overrated.

V for Vendetta. Nobody cites it as a classic or anything, but many people say it's an underrated comic book film, or a good comic book film, or a cool action movie, etc.

It is none of those things. It is bad. Anybody who has read the comic should, in my opinion, understand that it could and should have been a much better and different film. The adaptation was entirely botched.

IMO, all better then Training Day...

Seven
The Departed
Fargo

I think Mystic River, Crash, The Untouchables, and End of Watch are pretty close to being as good as Training Day.

Seven ain't no cop drama, it's a crime thriller/mystery.
The Departed is a crime drama.
Fargo is a cop drama, I'll give you that one.

Crash...CRASH? Are you high?
Mystic River is a waste of a brilliant cast.
The Untouchables is barely even a drama. It's more like a caper.
End Of Watch is basically just Training Day-Lite, which makes sense as the director wrote training day.

I'll go one step further and say the comic was overrated.

I loved Parasite but my lord, Shape of Water was the stupidest trash I have ever seen for getting so much praise. I just refer to it as the fish fucker movie. Although I think Del Toro is a trash director. All style, no substance.

I'll add Birdman as hugely overrated. It's a clever film but too clever for its own good. Great tracking shots and performances but a pretentious pile of drivel.

Del Toro had substance with Pan's Labyrinth but that's about it.

Del Toro is at his best when he's just aiming to be fun instead of deep. Blade 2 and Pacific Rim are fun films.

You're spot on about Birdman though.

Does anyone Appreciate The Game with Michael Douglas ?

I like it but I don't have it particulary close to the top of the list for Michael Douglas or David Fincher. Douglas has had a hell of a career of great movies though. Black Rain, Wall Street, The China Syndrome, etc.

What I wrote earlier in this thread:

The game gets worse everytime you watch it.

The film is something of an anti-mystery. All of the set up and no real payoff.

But once you know whats going to happen the film is basically just riding off of Michael Douglas' charisma.

The ultimate 'aging, pissed-off, white conservative guy' movie.

It's obviously a good film, but its target demographic seem to really love it for all the wrong reasons and miss the message of the story.

Agreed. Same with a lot of media.

Starship Troopers for example... a lot of people can't wrap their brain around the idea of satire and simply believe it to be an ideal representation of conservative utopia.
American Psycho is another one, lots of "mens rights" types worship Patrick Bateman for some fucking reason. Those people are functionally retarded and didnt understand the point of the movie/novel.

Warhammer 40k is another bit of media (especially online) that conservatives simply don't get.

You’re just arguing semantics. Crime drama vs cop drama vs crime thriller…stripped down to the core, it’s all the same type of film. That is, a story about a crime where a cop protagonist has to solve it, and a shitload die in the process. If anything, Fargo is the odd man out, given the signature Cohen Bros dark humor nature of it.

Mystic River is a bit underwhelming, but still in the same league as Training Day.

You might have my number on Crash. Been a while since I’ve seen it. And it does get shit on a lot. I’d have to rewatch before confirming my opinion.

Yeah it's a great one watch film, but kinda gives you the vibe that stuff like that actually happens.
And if you're a fan of Falling down you'll probably be put on a gov watchlist...

I hate these threads because often it will just turn out to be a list of all the top ranked films lol.

For me though, it's Scarface. I think it's a really really bad movie after the first bit. I hate how much people quote it and make it seem like it was a good movie.

I have tried a few times, but I cannot like the thin red line.
To me it just seems like pretentious arty trash.
I get angrier at it each time I watch it.
It doesn't carry off what it tries to do and just seems like a long unsatisfying wank.

Gonna get crucified, here.

Basically, Stanley Kubrick’s entire catalog. Guy made some great films but I just don’t get the massive, crazy bootlicking people bend over backwards to do for his filmography. I could be more nuanced in The Shining, 2001, and Eyes Wide Shut that seem to be on some sort of demigod level movie status.

The Shinjng, which wasn’t terribly well received during its release, plods along with no real sense of dread because the casting is soo terrible. You’re never emotionally invested in Wendy or Danny (they’re insanely flat) and Jack comes off as unhinged in the first scene with Ullman. Nicholson’s ridiculous over-acting is best served elsewhere. It’s just a stupendously terrible movie to me that I could sog on about forever, but my lord do people love it. I’m a ‘different strokes for different folks’ person and am no authority on someone’s individual perception of art or entertainment… but holy shit what a load of ass that movie was.

The Devils Backbones and Cronos?

Cop dramas are specifically about the cops. Gangster films are about the criminals. Crime dramas deal with interweaving of both and the effects on society. The Wire is about cops (to begin with) The Sopranos is about Gangsters. Breaking Bad is about Crime in general. Training Day is closer to those 90s cop films like gangs in blue, Colors, even that ridiculous movie Street Kings with Keanu Reeves.

Mystic River is nowhere near Training Day, if it didn't have its cast nobody would remember that film.

Crash has a talented cast, but the film has such a hamfisted and ridiculous approach to racism its impossible to be taken seriously. Also outside of all the 'shock horror' bigotry the film is actually really boring. Also isn't a cop drama. Cops make up like 15% of the main characters.
