Media Which fighter made you a fan of MMA?

Gabriel Gonzaga

The first UFC 70 I seen cuz it was free

I was like wow this guy is good at kicking people in the head I can't wait to see what he does next

He didn't do anything

There are a few that are sorta jumbled up from when I first found this. The smashing machine. Ken shamrock. Don Frye.

Then a little later seeing bj Penn go up and take out Hughes and Nick Diaz Robbie Lawler solidified my cage fight love

Brock because I watched WWE as a kid first introduced me to the sport and I became a fan of Cain from him putting the whoopin on him.

Conor’s run got me in to the point it became the main sport I would watch and switched training from boxing.

It was ken shamrock. Not necessarily because I’m a shamrock fan (I’m not) but because i was a prowrestling fan at the time and Ken going to wwf is what introduced me to mma.

Renzo Gracie. When i saw him beat a short but jacked monster of a wrestler/brawler in Phil Benedict - i knew right then and there I was training in BJJ. Funny , back then (1997) you could rent these fights on VHS from Westcoast video stores. Started training that same year

Initially and for a brief time Rousey. When she was on TUF I immediately started rooting for Tate, Holm and all her opponents.

A memorable one for me was Bisping knocking out Rockhold. I didn't know their back story until after the fight and found it amusing. This led me toward learning about the dynamics of fights. Started paying attention to commentary and breakdowns. Got fight pass and watched all of TUF and lots of older fights. Became a fan of Bisping and other fighters like Cruz, Aldo and Izzy. Started trying to understand the fighters' styles, strengths and weaknesses.

For international MMA, Rena Kubota was one I always watched in Rizin. In ONE it was Superlek, Stamp Fairtex, Rodtang and all those amazing Muay Thai fighters who I still love watching.

I'm sure there are others like me. I was just attracted by the entire sport, not by any single fighter. Of course I grew to really like the "Silver Age" fighters like Liddell, Hughes, BJ, Randy, Rich Franklin, and even Tito.
(As you can guess I'm a TUF noob.)

Renzo Gracie I guess. I was flipping through the channels when I was like 10 and thought I found some sort of pro wrestling on the spanish station.

Renzo gracie then upkicked Oleg Taktarov in the face and belted him in the jaw with a follow up punch. I was like holy shit what is this? Found UFC 1 on VHS at blockbuster sometime soon after.

Mirko Filipovic and Anderson Silva. Cro Cop because I am Croatian and I remember family watching fights, my first memory being Nogueira armbar loss (I was 7 at the time, 2003). Then I already knew I like what I see.

Then it was playing UFC 2009 Undisputed game and enjoying the hell out of it, especially using Anderson and Chuck Lidell. So yeah those were all traces back from the childhood, it was always something. Consistent following started at around middle of 2010s up until now. Before it was just a bunch of popular fights only with the most famous guys and highlight videos. It was very enjoyable for me, but it was still not consistent as it was later.

But yeah, Cro Cop and Silva mythology was definitely strong for me all the way from the childhood.
