Which fighter embodies the true spirit of martial arts the most?

Ronda

For example, Tank was just a barroom brawler who could move a train with a punch. He trained on a bar stool. He probably cant spell martial arts.

Machida has trained since a child. Has always shown respect for his opponents win-or-lose. He takes relatively little damage. He relies on speed and skill rather than brawn. He seems to be the complete martial artist.

Some may think GSP, but they'd be wrong.
GSP by far. You're wrong.

Fedor, gsp, might mouse, machida, cormier

Kalib Starnes. In the martial arts you're taught to avoid fighting whenever possible, and to try to do as little damage as possible to your attacker if you must fight.

"Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather then maim. Maim rather than kill."

I will get shit for this but, its Karo Parisyan!

I am not being sarcastic either, the guy at one point, was training hard, fighting using technique and was in the lifestyle of martial arts training and then taking fights while not really having training camp. Just trained and worked on his technique and would fight on the side.

Later on, fame came and he became lazy and arrogant. But people forget, there was a time even way before the Nate incident that Karo was actually a quite guy who was training for judo and sub skills and was doing MMA on the side.

Conor without a doubt. The dude takes on bus fulls of fighters at a time.

Rin Nakai. She is Asian, looks like an athlete and has an unorthodox technique.

Why can’t it be GSP?

I’ll also nominate Big Nog. He was always respectful.

GSP is a great example IMO. Humble, shows respect, works tirelessly, and presents himself as a professional.

You may say it's wrong, for whatever reason that is, but I think it's GSP. Full dedication in and out of camp. Ultimate versatility. Control and composure over ego and pride, sticking to the strategy 100% of the time. Sportsmanlike conduct. Always separating the fight from the personal. The only thing I could hold against him is his somewhat spiritual and traditional approach to the sport, but his training regiment seems to be much more modern and scientiific than his mindset suggests and the actual practice is what counts in the end. So all he has left to do is become a coach for the next generations once his career is officially over.

Machida easily. Last night was all you needed to see. He kos vitor with a crazy kick, doesn't follow up steps back and bows and then kneels in front of him waiting to see if he's ok

Hard to pick just one. If you put in work in the gym... have a clear mind , body and soul... And strive to be the best. You are a true martial artist... Just wish we had more in the sport...

If you ask the Gracies, from the very beginning their idea of
a true martial artist was about someone going to the ring
to prove its worth in a Vale Tudo/NHB tradition. Since the 1930s.

Now, Tank, say what u say, but recently he has begun to recollect
the true spirit of the early UFCs, showing hespect to some of the
ol´school badasses that he onced badmouthed: Hoyce, Ken, Ruas etc.
And criticizing the evolution of modern UFC as watered down.

In that sense, Tank & all the ol´school define a certain view of
the true martial artist.
