Thought it was typical open world slop that’s been releasing for the past 10+ years but it isn’t. World is surprisingly full of life and always something to do not a bunch of gay ass stupid fetch quests, everything you do also feels rewarding from the mini games which give you stat points to the main story and side quests.
Game also plays surprisingly well, only had one bug where I had to shut the game down and reopen on ps5 pro in 50 hours.

Been having quite a bit of fun with it only complaint so far is the 500 menus, first 5 or so hours felt like a bunch of micromanagement but once I settled in it wasn’t a problem, could be easily solved with a “claim all” that just claims every reward for you.

Translation and voice acting (ai?) is pretty shit, but the story gets across well enough that if you aren’t a complete retard you can follow along no problem

Anyone else playing? It’s completely free to play and not p2w in anyway

Watched Saintone play some of it the other day. Appears to be a slimmed down Tera Online combat clone with modern day free2play MMO complexity.

Sadly the combat lacks that high fantasy element that would make me interested : (

I don't play or follow games like I used to so what does free to play really mean? When I read that I see "Not a real game" and skip past it.

MMO's take similar approaches. Most common way is limiting stash space requiring a purchase to expand it. Another is the mobile version way of using real world money to acquire crafting material to upgrade your character. For playing the game to acquire such material is time gated and or a elongated grind.

This game took the retail game way of monetization. By locking the best looking character customization in the store.

It’s a full on open world game, it’s like an MMO lite I guess absolutely 0 content is pay-walled or P2W, I should mention it does have an energy system but I’m 50 hours in and unaffected by it, you also can’t buy energy.
You can play it with others and it has group content but I’ve been playing it by myself and having a blast just exploring.

One thing I really like about it is you have to do different things to get your skills, you might have to do a quest, steal it from someone else or maybe you just find it in a chest while exploring. It doesn’t have the same copy paste skill tree that so many games like this have and it’s a refreshing change.
You also don’t get pigeonholed into doing stuff you don’t want to, it leaves you to discover for yourself.

The only monetization is purely cosmetic, game does have a season pass though.
You get a couple things like a couple extra potion slots from the season pass but they are a non factor as far as gameplay goes and only affects PVE, not PVP.

Looks pretty cool but I'm getting buried by all these damn games. I threw it on my wishlist so I can try it eventually.

So you can download it for free, it's just they want you to spend money on things after?

Difficult to think it’s not a p2w …

Do you mean like throwing up purchases in game? Like “Buy battle pass” or stuff like that? As far as I’ve seen in my experience playing the game the only thing I’ve seen to purchase is when they have a new skin, the notification isn’t present other than a few seconds at login.

As I said in my post above the game is NOT p2w and has 0 p2w elements, if you download you can enjoy every piece of playable content the game has to offer for free, no membership or anything. Skins do not affect gameplay in any way.

I guess yes to your first question but I'm not sure what a battle pass is. I play on a PS5 but don't pay for online and either play a single player game by myself or a coop game with the GF.

I suppose I don't understand how the developer's make money if it's free to download.

Some of the stuff that you can buy costs up to $40,000 but its all cosmetic

The game is huge in China (15m players there alone iirc) , its been out there for a while and they have a load more content than the worldwide version currently so they've made a load off that version too

I’m just done with any game that has a billion menus and hundred different currencies. It doesn’t matter how good the game is I simply get so frustrated navigating that and it makes it feel like a chore. Zenless Zone Zero was fun but I quit for the same reason after about 15 hours. When I was a kid I had a ton of time but no money and this would have been perfect then. Now I have the money but not enough time and since time is limited I’ll just stick to paying for games that provide a complete experience and aren’t always telling me to buy more in game currency

It really shouldn't work, but there are many people out there that will spend money on all sorts of in game shit. Some do it out of support to basically thank the developers and keep them working on the game, but there are a whole lot of big fish out there who just must consume everything the game has to offer and will spend thousands of dollars to keep up(and show off of course). These games are practically mini societies, and clout is still king, I guess. It's kind of like buying a fancy pair of shoes or something. Doesn't change your life in any meaningful way, but hey everyone, look what I got!

Publisher of this game has been Blizzards Chinese publisher since 2008. Where the microtransactions of this game and Blizzard games in China are far more aggressive compared to the west. Who comically have released two games this year locally and globally that are direct competitors to the Blizzard games they oversee in China.

World average has a gamer spending around $140 per year on gaming microtransactions.

Well I guess if people are willing to pay like that.

basically pay to win became a thing because people have zero attention span these days and want instant gratification

plenty of free games are out there for people to play that are great if you just want to enjoy playing the game, and not be the person to brag about being the first to complete it or get the furthest

Yea pretty much this. I played like 300+ hours in Genshin and ended up spending I think about $100 when it was all said and done. I spent it because I felt the devs earned it with me spending so much time in the game. The funny thing is it takes all the fun out of game for me and I wont ever spend money on them again. Not because I don't want to support the devs but because it takes all the fun out of playing the game to earn the in game currency myself.

I did the same with Path of Exile, I probably spent 200+ dollars on it because I had so many hours and would usually drop cash whenever they would drop a new useful stash tab or some cool skins, that was over the course of a few years though

I’m sure I’ll be spending money on this game at some point as Ive got over 50 hours now and have plenty more game to play, even though it’s free I feel I’ve gotten more than I would out of most 60$+ games

Everything I'm hearing about this sounds really good, like they crammed numerous genres into it and made it work.

I don't know anything about the story/purpose, whats that like?

I remember you talking that game up. I think I downloaded it but never played it.

Before Genshin came out (I believe) I got into a similar game called Star Rail. Its a TB JRPG-like gacha. The graphics/art style is gorgeous, and I liked the world building. I put at least a couple of hundred hours into it and never felt the need to buy anything, but like you I did more for support.

Hell I just bought that 2B/Nier Automata DLC for Stellar Blade to support them. The outfit mods help too lol. I love that it ads Nier music. What a fantastic game!

I love JRPG's and a good grind, but without a beginning, middle, and end for tje story, I just lost interest. They have a lot of different writers, and were inconsistent, so they didn't help.

How was Genshin's story? Hopefully this game has a good one, with some kind of initial ending before justifying the live service, like the early Diablo games did.

Was watching FightinCowboy play this and it looks hella fun. The fact you can yeet a freaking bear pretty much seals the deal.
