When you watch Jones throw punches....

... you realize he doesn't like to punch. He uses kicks, elbows, knees very frequiently, but he doesn't punch unless he absolutely has to. Aljamain Sterling who came from the same gym (Bomb Squad) shares this trait as well.

He may not hit hard, but he does plenty... to get the points and the win :)

Your name is respek, but you're not giving me it. The name calling is unnecessary, bruh.
Respekfully, I'm impersonating Jones. Nothing personal broseph.

I'm not saying he punches like Ronda Rousey, just saying he doesn't have that natural snap that KO punchers have. Its just an observation.

Lol @ ppl thinking I'm calling him some fairy fisted hoe.

In all seriousness, there isn't much to discuss TS. Jon's hands are mediocre at best, everyone with a functional brain has noticed it. It's either his trainers are not doing a good job, which is unlikely, or he just doesn't have aptitude for proper punching. It's most likely the latter.

I think he made improvements with the long right cross vs Machida, and it hurt Lyoto, but generally yeah, he mostly arm punches. Or when he leaned in with rights against DC he pushed those punches. The uppercuts against Glover were much of the same. Doesn't turn with them and doesn't bend his knees, but him being able to land those shots is impressive.

Everything looks to be designed for speed to stay out of close range, but I don't think that's an excuse. Plenty of tall, lanky boxers with his body type throw hard. Maybe boxing is just the one area where he isn't super talented. Jones comes from a wrestling background and many wrestlers just have trouble losing shoulder stiffness when transitioning to punching.

Great post, that's the description I was looking. Its like he really does have some sort of shoulder stiffness, and its not loose and "flowey" like natural born hitters are born with.

I respek that answer.

Cormier just said recently in an interview that Jones has little to no power in his punches. Said Hit'n'Run uses elbows, knees and kicks because he can't really hurt guys with his hands.

Also, Jones is now at an age where Winkeljohn and his other coaches probably won't mess with his striking too much. It's been a winning formula for a long time and he's trained for a looong time now. Much of that could be seen vs OSP. Set in his ways. Some of it can be chalked up to that layoff, but when you're going through the motions it's generally not a good sign.

Fuck eye gouging.

When you "accidentally" hurt people in other sports the refs don't just give you a pass.

Anyway, in regards to your contention that every great athlete has some physical advantage...that's simply not true.

...it's true in most cases, but it doesn't always apply.

The mental aspect is generally THE most important thing...as there are any number of people who had the physical tools....yet never panned out.

It's a bit different when the purpose of your sport is to, ya know, hurt the other guy. I get what you're saying but still. Yes the refs should do something.

And i agree. It's not all physical but it's a good place to start.

I have nothing remotely intelligent to add to this conversation. I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but I do live in my mama's basement.

well, even BIsping has learned recently to get a little more power into his punches. that or he's been really lucky lately, dropping Anderson and knocking out Luke. So perhaps Jones can "learn" sitting down in his punches a little more as well. The observation in the OP is true though.

Where were all the eye likes in pride?
One better how about pancreas?
I can tell you it was never a problem and you couldn't even punch
All open handed strikes but bones , Gustafson seem to poke eyes every fight.
That shitnis intentional. Hes not stupid.
But one hell of a fighter and uses eyepokes like holyfield used his head as a weapon.

Definitely.

Megan Anderson for example has a VERY good starting place...

You said it yourself. Liver shot. Doesn't take the hardest punch. Besides, even your mother could've punched Shogun in the ribs at that point, and he was still going down. He was beaten half to death by that point.
Liver shots are easy???
In what reality?

Didn't he stagger DC multiple times?
