When You Got Your First High Speed Internet.

I don't recall, but I'm sure was very happy. Pron FTW

My house in Alaska up until last year had 2MB speed DSL that cost $180 a month and had a 40 GB cap. We got a fiber cable to our island finally and now have 1GB speed with unlimited usage for $115. My other home in WA I had dial up until 2005.....

I actually don't remember when I made the jump to high speed now that I think about it. I just remember my ISP was Rogers and it was the earliest to offer high speed in North America. It was a pain in the ass for the technician to get the cable line to reach my computer. It took hours to install, I don't remember how fast it was, maybe 50 to 100k/s. I must have tried to download a bunch of porn clips. Definitely come a long way since then, in a few days, I will be upgraded from 300mb/s to a 500mb/s connection for about $35 a month.

I'll be honest whenever the change happened I couldn't tell. I know it got much better but there wasn't a magical moment where it became clear.

Got two letters from cable company saying 9/11 they bump my internet speed from 20Mbps to 100Mbps. We shall see if it's bullshit since I'm paying like double the original internet fee and they were supposed to be giving me 100Mbps with what I'm paying.

How does fiber work? Can it make use of existing coaxial in the house or does the fiber need to go to the computer?

I can remember how upsetting it was that my area didn't get cable high speed internet right away, thought areas all around me had high speed internet. As a result I went with a satellite internet company. I forget their name now, but that worked well for me, though it cost more and would go out when storms were in the area. This was in the later 90s or early 2000s.

Well I remeeber when I thought email was a fad. First home DSL I got was 02. But had high speed through work in the late 90s.

Imagine getting ultra-fast internet in a country where it's illegal to download pron and the first thing your filthy brother does is use it to download torrent pron

Although tbf I'd have done it as well
Haha i didnt know at that time you could get flagged by the isp i was torrenting a movie 😅

I lived out in the sticks, so I didn't even get dsl until.....2008ish?

First we had the directtv satellite or whatever, which was fine for speed but sucked balls for gaming because of the input time, plus the data caps (that they never really tell you about).

Finally a guy that ran a provider almost right next door to my business offered it where I lived and I jumped on it. I still remember the change from playing a game like WoW where every click had a 1-second lag to having seamless response time. I absolutely slayed the battlegrounds that weekend.

I think I gave my computer AIDs. I can't remember if it's limewire/napster/Kazaa. I downloaded too many cracked games and viruses. Porn was a hit or miss. Some weird dude was also uploading Bill Clinton speeches under popular music titles.

The worst feeling is downloading something for days or even weeks and it doesn't work. The best feeling is that pron movie that you totally forgot about downloading finally finished after months of idling at 99 percent and some random person logged on so you leached it from them.

I could finally play Counter Strike and Team Fortress at home without having to lag. I would be forced to go to the Internet cafe to play video games if I wanted a lag free experience.

Also remember never paying for 56K. I would jump on AOL free trials and net zero. Good times.

I was poor and all my friends were playing Star wars galaxies and I had to play with them on dial up.

It was awful. It kinda worked but the lag was incredible. I'm talking like 1 frame per second, sometimes worse.

I was constantly dying because I couldn't see what was going on.

I played like that for about a month I think before getting DSL.

I think the fiber line comes to your house but inside your house you have to use Ethernet or WiFi.

There may be some creative way to use existing coax but I don't know it.

I always seems to live in the slowest internet areas for years. It probably wasn't until 2015 i was able to get more speed then i need.
Alot of you probably didn't know one way cable internet was a thing, but i remember having to pay $25 for a landline phone service just to dial in to beable to download with cable internet. This was back in 2008. If i remember correctly we ended up having to get two phone lines $50 , and the cable internet service $60. And that wasn't even including cable tv. Pretty sure the download speed was less then 250Kbps. All i know was back then most movies were like 700mb and it took longer to download then the length of the movie.

I was enter first internet high speeds when I was leave my home village. When I was see first video of #AmericanHero skateboarder icon Rodney Mullen it was like magician was transfer many data packet from server to house via American jet plane 🤯✈️📂

Before I was just use Kwangmyong which although it was been quite sufficient for my researches it was transfer data quite patiently more like river boat.

First high-speed connection? Beta tested Mpowered for MT&T back in late '95/early '96, and never looked back.

When you go from 56k dialup, to a true 7Mb/1Mb ADSL connection, and the CO is in the driveway to your apartment complex... back then was insane (by North American standards anyways). IRC, mIRC, DC++, it was heaven.

Remember downloading at a few kb a second on the dial ups? Taking weeks to dl the rar fragments to piece together 1 movie?

Then their ADSL turned into DSL, which is nothing but bullshit glorified dial up, and the cable company leapfrogged them, and well, there you go. People buy slower internet like they buy smaller TV's. Was with the cable company from the 25Mb/2Mb - 125Mb/5Mb era. Back to the phone company ever since on Fiber. I think I am 1.5Gb/?? Gb right now, haven't bothered to see if their top end data rates have changed.

Ever seen that meme before?

"Want to see what kind of person you married? Make them use a computer with slow internet!" (there have many similar ones, but..)

That shit is for real. I either want really fast internet, or none at all. Not some fucking cocktease where I have to wait a second or two between clicks and pages. I already know I am a horrible person with no internet, and my wife is a trooper.

All that being said, and if I have learned anything about the internet is that watching kids without internet is fucking hilarious. I mean, it's not funny when it happens to me, but watching kids trying to figure out why nothing works is super-entertaining. Even more funny when the power goes out too. They're just like "WTF do I do now???".

I was a hold out for many many years, but I sure bummed off of University or my friends high speed internets
